Stage 3 Report

Stage 3 brings the first climbing in the race as the peloton rides up to Qantab, the stage is rated hilly. There are three Cat 3’s and two sprints along the 146k. The climb to the finish should determine the KOM though with 20 points available.

The organizers like the punchy riders for this one with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ctt.png Waeytens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Morin, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Yates at the top of the list. GC favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Jorgenson also makes the list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/favs.jpg

The first 7 riders to attack are allowed to go and with 20k gone they come together with a lead of 2’36. Included are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eus.png Barbero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbm.png Kawasaki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Dahl Olsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Borg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Singh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png De Marigny-Lagesse (in White), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Sillankorva. Only 1 rider from a traditional cycling nation and both islands and micro-nations well represented in the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/01.jpg

The lead goes out to 3’30 before pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Welten begins to ride and with 77k to go he has it down to 2’22. Nobody else willing to help right now. 13k to the first KOM point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/02.jpg

Barbero pulls away to win the Cat 3 climb. Second is Kawasaki. Dahl Olsen, who led most of the climb, is third. Lead down to 2’09.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/03.jpg

Borg wins the first sprint point ahead of Barbero and Singh. The rolling terrain is causing some splits in the peloton behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/04.jpg

The splits in the peloton persisting for now. First Newton and now Trans (Glivar, Kunkumpai) are driving the pace in the front group of 39 and have the gap up to 44 seconds. The trailing group is 80 strong - Team Würth MODYF (Willwohl) are the ones working to close the gap with help from Babymetal (Riabushenko). Riders behind the split include climbers like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Seboka, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Borisavljevic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tlt.png Munoz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Schleck, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Vanhoucke as well as a number of others.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/05.jpg

A few k later, with 45k to go the gap is closed with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Quispe a key player. The break’s lead is 2’09 and it is 11k to the second Cat 3. About 18 riders have been dropped and don’t look likely to rejoin but none of them are GC players.

The second KOM is won by Kawasaki as Barbero cracks just shy of the top. Borg third. Peloton at 1’43 with another split right now, this one after 83 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/06.jpg

Borg beats Barbero and Kawasaki at the second sprint point with 29k to go. De Marigny-Lagesse has just been dropped. Dahl Olsen and Sillankorva were dropped much earlier. The peloton is again in pieces with the front piece 1’02 behind the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/07.jpg

20k to go, the 4 surviving breakaway riders are beginning the final Cat 3. They have 32 seconds over the 35-rider vanguard of the peloton which includes the Yellow Jersey. Another 74-riders are trying to bridge back up and it is getting a little desperate as team leaders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Borisavljevic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Helme are doing the work. The key GC riders though are all safe in the front group although stage favorites pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Morin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Yates have both missed the split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/08.jpg

Kawasaki hangs on to win the third KOM from Borg just as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Hofstetter brings the peloton back up to them. The two front groups have merged to form a 113-rider peloton. The only surprising name not there is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Vanhoucke.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/09.jpg

10k to go. Euskotren (Rochas, Cabanas) and Cervelo (Hamilton, Izaguirre, Preidler) doing the work. Hiclona also up there with Morin. The peloton down to 89 riders with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Lehtinen, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Hayter more notable names dropped. The Finn appeared to drop back voluntarily, maybe to help Vanhoucke, but that appears to be a lost cause so now he trying to get himself back to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/10.jpg

8k to go the riders are on the small climb before the finishing climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Carpenter launches the first attack with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eus.png Serrano and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Lafay on his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/11.jpg

That doesn’t get a gap and Morin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Hvideberg and Preidler have a go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/12.jpg

Hvideberg can’t keep up, but Morin is joined by Carpenter up front and then Preidler, Serrano and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ctt.png Hamilton just behind, and those 5 have a small gap as they start the descent before the final climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/13.jpg

The gap is fluid but as they start the final climb it is officially a 67-rider front group. The climb is 3.7k in total but the first 1k and last 800 meters are steep with a flat section in between. More of the one-dimensional climbers have been dropped including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tlt.png Munoz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Bartl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Ahmad Zamri, and the most one-dimensional of them all, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Seboka. Yellow Jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tlt.png Vingerling, is struggling and is at the back of the peloton, doesn’t seem likely he will be able to keep in touch all the way to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/14.jpg

Serrano attacks again, Morin tries to stay with him but fails. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Laas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Smith set off in pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/15.jpg

As they reach the flat section Serrano’s attack is shut down and Smith is on the front. Peloton down to 53 with the Yellow Jersey dropped. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Conti, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eus.png Ablenado all behind the split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/16.jpg

It is down to a 23-rider group as they hit the 1k banner, the final climb starts around the hairpin. Riders missing the split include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Shirota, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Chamorro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Rochas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Iturria, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Borisavljevic, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Schleck.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eus.png Serrano has been irrepressible all stage and he has the lead with 600 meters to go. The next row includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Laas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ctt.png Waeytens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Smith and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Lafay. Then it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Jorgenson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Carr.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/18.jpg

300 meters to go, they are almost off the steep section. Smith has his nose in front, but Jorgenson is making good progress through the middle. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Bennett is coming fast to the right of Laas. Right now, the first 44 riders are in a single group, but it looks like there is gap forming in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Penasa.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/19.jpg

200 meters. Smith has his nose clearly in front. There is now a gap being given after the first 16 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/dvt.png Smith wins stage 2 and has time to celebrate. Lafay and Jorgenson neck and neck for 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Jorgenson edges pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Lafay for 2nd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eus.png Serrano holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Laas for 4th. 6th goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Bennett.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sct.png Carpenter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ctt.png Waeytens take the last bonus seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tlt.png Primozic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/hrt.png Carr complete the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C2/TOME/S3/23.jpg

A 34-second gap is awarded after the 16th rider, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Iturria finishes 18th and loses time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Penasa finishes 19th and loses an additional 14 seconds. Three other strong climbers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Lunke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eus.png Munoz, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Carapaz finish 13th to 15th and will only have time bonuses to make up tomorrow.

Smith gets the KOM jersey as well the leader’s jersey. Jorgenson is the best young rider by over a minute over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Rodriguez. Euskadi lead the team’s competition by 11 seconds over Simba Cement and Gjensidige. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tlt.png Vingerling still leads in points.
