Following yesterdays sprint finish, today might be the first key stage for the GC. It doesn`t look that difficult but it`s the famous Corkscrew climb, coming from a high speed downhill with difficult positioning into a rather short but very steep Cat. 2 and then no time to recover or come back as once being at the top a descent leads the riders to the finish.
The last couple years saw several different scenarios here, starting from the 2023 breakaway win, where Varga attacked out of the break to win solo and in fact almost took home the GC, just being lost by 1s in the end.
Then there have been several years of puncheurs going for it in a small group or in case of bigger groups, even some sprinters were in the mix and could keep up their GC chances.
With Varga having done it last year, it`s clearly a nice scenario for himself or a similar rider type, even though the puncheurs will know about that danger now.
5 riders in the break and 3 of them for the 2nd time already.
We see KoM leader and actual kind of Varga rider Mundle. Then the two TT talents Milesi and Terada obviously enjoyed their ride yesterday and might even go for the KoM giving Mundle a nice challenge.
Ben Ameur and Christen are the other two riders. So it`s four neo pros and Mundle today. Active start to their career in this race.
Right off the start the Ashton Hill expects the riders. Almost 10 km in length but with an average of 4 % and not the highest pace, it`s not too difficult for the peloton.
The breakaway though had to go rather fast here to open the gap and in the end young Christen shows his climbing legs to take the 6 points. Mundle taking 4 more points with Milesi with the final 2. He is wearing the U25 jersey today, while Terada as last of that group couldn`t challenge them here.
Christen showing promising signs of a career to come here. Not only does he take the next KoM, but also the two sprints in between.
Ben Ameur and Terada this time getting the smaller points, so it`s Mundle 20, Milesi/Christen/Terada 12 each for now.
Back in the peloton again some riders weren`t super attentive and a gap appeared before them. Some of those are Calmejane, Seigle, Paez, Arndt, Gladysh, Kanepejs and actually last years 2nd Varga.
Meanwhile the top GC riders are all in very good positions with McCarthy, Jensen, Kinoshita, Sagan, Demare, Kelderman, Müller, Boswell, Waeytens, Moscon, Borges, Lagane in the first rows of all the climbing and now going towards the Corkscrew.
Bagioli, Edmondson, Turgis are in the first group but not that ideally placed and should take care to stay up there.
8,3 km to the finish, 2,2 km of 9 % climbing and we see the five riders still working together.
It`s just over 1 min ahead of the peloton of 151 riders.
Right now it`s Podium Ambition with Alexander and Le Court working for Lagane. Then also Kopfauf for Sagan and UBS being up there at times as well.
As most teams though let Alexander do the main work for Podium Ambition, he got not enough recover periods to go all in.
In the end the break is just making it over the top, that said, it`s basically Ben Ameur and Christen only, which means, later going equal to Mundle in the KoM ranking.
The favourites kept rather calm in the end but just over the top with a bit more uphill left, two riders attack. Not the very best yet but Jensen and Boswell are just next in the line. And at 33 years of age their experience shows as it was the perfect moment and several others didn`t expect this.
Sagan tries to follow but was too late and just leads the others over the top with a small gap.
Christen and Ben Ameur also were able to stay in front. The other three, who had been in the break yesterday apparently had to pay tribute from their efforts.
Just over 2km left and it`s 20s for the duo in front and almost same gap for Jensen/Boswell.
A group of 24 following including most puncheurs, whereas the sprinters got dropped into the bigger group of 43 with another 25s gap.
Flamme Rouge. Ben Ameur starts the sprint. The gap melts a bit and it`s getting flatter now.
Christen tries to remain in the slipstream with Jensen fighting for 3rd or maybe still more? Boswell sitting behind but also the gap then melting.
Almost gone the gap between the puncheur duo and the others. Moscon, Lagane, Demare, McCarthy, Müller, Sagan, Kelderman, Kinoshita in the first positions.
500 m and Christen attacks in the fight for the win. Will this be enough for the young Swiss?
The answer is yes. Huge win for Lotto and Christen today. This might even be the GC lead for tomorrow. Ben Ameur also with a fantastic early career performance as 2nd.
Jensen must have had huge legs today, maybe being the strongest, not only initiating that late attack but also winning the sprint for 3rd from the front position against Boswell. And also keeping the gap to the next better sprinters. GC wise this could be huge for both of them.
Missed opportunity for Demare. Clearly a stage, he had hoped to win from a smaller group, similar to Lagane behind him. Still some more bonus seconds for both of them.
In the end it`s 28s for that group to Christen and 14s to the puncheur duo, meaning GC wise todays top4 will also be the GC top4 with Lagane and Demare following then. Christen in fact going to lead all individual competitions after today. Well played.
In the background you can also see the next "split", which is the puncheurs in the front and sprinters behind. It`s 29s in the end for all the sprinters.
In Nikiema, Gladysh, Vosekalns, Calmejane, Gall, Paez, Seigle more riders lost their GC chances today.
