Tour of Tasmania
Stage 1
Bicheno – St. Helens 212.1km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/Startlist.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/01.jpg

The stage 1 favorites list is headlined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh, as expected. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi stands out a couple spots above preview’s expectation with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Manninen two spots lower than expectations. The profile shows a couple KOM points in the first section of the stage alongside a couple sprint points as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/02.jpg

It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Mosca with the first attack of the season and of the Tour of Tasmania. He’s joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Berwick in the first two riders off the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/03.jpg

At the first KOM, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Mosca takes the top points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Berwick while no other riders have made the breakaway. At the front of the peloton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Yatsevich takes the final KOM points of this first 3rd category climb.
The first sprint point comes quickly after and the TV cameras realize there isn’t much to show.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Mosca takes 1st and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Berwick 2nd again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/04.jpg

Well, while there wasn’t a major fight for the first points, 3rd place is a major battle! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Rajovic gets a full leadout to take the final points for 3rd. The gap extends to the breakaway afterward up to 3:00min with 170km to go. Over the flat section, that gap extends again to 7:00 as a maximum around 145km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Mosca leads most of the climbs and is taking longer turns as the clearly stronger rider in the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/05.jpg

As the road heads uphill toward the final categorized climb of the day, the gap descends to 6:00min. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Mosca takes the first place points again without issue and almost drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Berwick in the final ascent. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Kanerva leads the peloton over to also take 2 points on the day and tie for 3rd in the standings. Just like before, the sprint point really isn’t in question and allows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Mosca to take the full points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Rajovic takes first place again in bunch sprint for 3rd. So third place overall, and gets another set of points and bonus seconds. His acceleration is just unmatched, especially in these sprints that start with less than 1km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi takes 4th, even though that doesn’t give anything. Still 110km to go and the gap goes down to 4:45 due to the sprint preparation. The teams leading the peloton throughout the stage have been Xero Racing, cycleYorkshire, and Tinkoff Team – La Datcha.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/07.jpg

With 50km to go, the gap has dropped all the way to 2:10, and the breakaway is in view. The final 50km includes a long decline off the plateau that should extend the breakaway’s life, but there are tons of sprinters ready for a win. The dedication of these teams is very strong though as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Skujins is seen on the front of the peloton with 37km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Areruya has been seen occasionally in the first 7 wheels as well in the attempt to bring the group back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Mosca again leads the charge in the breakaway ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Berwick. With 31km to go, they crest the plateau and head toward the descent. There’s only a 1 minute gap, but they’re able to hold the gap on the descent. With 25km it flattens out and the gap plummets again to 49 seconds immediately.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/09.jpg

With 17km to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Mosca and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Berwick are dead tired and are brought back into the peloton. Now it’s time for the sprint trains to get set-up and cycleYorkshire is the main team in line. Xero Racing is in 2nd best position now, but the 17km left are a lot of time to maneuver.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/10.jpg

At the 10km to go banner, cycleYorkshire still has a commanding lead on the front to push the pace while also setting up their final lineup for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh behind. For Xero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Manninen is currently on the front, but that should change quickly. The rest of the sprinters are set-up behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Stash and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Silva very close behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/11.jpg

With 5km to go, the leadout for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov is a bit disjointed, but preparing for the right hand turn. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Ganna is out front on the left ready for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Areruya to bring the Xero train for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Manninen. Between, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi sits alone alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Peak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Gross, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Nommela, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Bol, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Rajovic has a much worse leadout now than at the intermediates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh has a lot of wheels to get through.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/12.jpg

3k to go and the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Manninen train and the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh train have found their ways through to the front with the finish line in sight! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png Jakobsen looks in good position as he can choose either wheel, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Gross and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Rajovic are closest to the front on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/13.jpg

There’s a gap in the back of the peloton with about half the field off the back. Sometimes the timing is rather kind to these riders at the end, but that gap is more than nothing. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Hirt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Lammertink, and many others are behind with negative implications for multiple reasons. There’s 1.8km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/14.jpg

1.3km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh has a fantastic leadout! He’s still in the wheel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov is not fully in the slipstream. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Manninen has decided to slot to the lefthand side and is also only minorly slipstreaming. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Rajovic is well-positioned for a top result while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Bol is already in a full out sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh still holds the lead with 700m to go while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov is catching up a tad. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Gross looks strong and moving forward while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Bol is also gaining a slight bit of traction. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Abdul Halil is coming from deep, but there’s lots of room on that side of the road. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Manninen does not appear to be finding space or an opportunity to win, but the race isn’t over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/16.jpg

400m to go and the work of cycleYorkshire appears to be wearing off. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh has been caught and there’s 6 across with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Manninen finding another gear. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Gross, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Rajovic, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/jur.png Bol are the rest of the front row from L to R. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Stash is well protected alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov is falling back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi might have the positioning to slide by if they can put in a final burst.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/17.jpg

Just over 100m to go and the tables have turned. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Abdul Halil flies up the right, while those on the inside behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Cullaigh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Manninen are blocked up a tad. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij still finds a way through while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi is also moving fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/18.jpg

At the line, it looks like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Abdul Halil will take the first leader’s jersey ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Van der Kooij! 3rd goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ldl.png Kemboi! A great final sprint leads to a close rest of the Top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Peak finishes strong for 4th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pum.png Gross and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Nommela in 6th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mol.png Stash, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/evo.png Silva, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/xr0.png Manninen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/pol.png Garcia Cortina close out the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S1/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Abdul Halil leads the GC, sprint standings and the individual stage results, while teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Mosca leads the KOM.

Down the standings, there is a 1:30 gap. There’s lots of riders who will be upset to fall behind the split, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/oxf.png Eastman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Lammertink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ziz.png Shikai, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Hirt, and many others.
