Hello
Back again this year with another prediction. Let's first see how accurate my prediction was last year.

Well it was a bit of an improvement from last year.
Not as many outliers this time, although I think I got some of the same teams wrong now more than once. On average the difference between the actual ranking and my prediction was 2.7 places. Not sure I'll be investing the same amount of time into the prediction this year, but I'll try to keep the same format with a brief overview for each team.
There is no timetable on when I'll have it done. Ideally before the season starts, but not sure.
"I am a cyclist, I may not be the best, but that is what I strive to be. I may never get there, but I will never quit trying." - Tadej Pogačar

Both Reis and Powless proved last year that they are very capable leaders in PCT. They are somewhat similar, but also different enough that I assume both will have plenty of chances to score on their own. I'm not sure if Afewerki will hit the same numbers as last year, but at this point he has a proven track record of overperformance so he should still do pretty well. I'm not a fan of the lack of depth in the team, but Durbridge should be at least the 4th reliable scorer here.

I've struggled predicting Bralirwa in the last couple of years in both directions. The team is fairly similar to last year, which is impressive given they spent a lot of money on "you know who". I can't see much of a drop off with Meintjes and Stallaert despite his decline could actually take back the status of top cobbler in the division. The sprinting options are pretty bare so it will take good planning to get results from the secondary riders, but I think the manager is up to the task.

It feels a bit weird, but Sagan and Kwiatkowski are the most interesting/wildcards on this team. Both had underwhelming seasons in PT, but maybe PCT is their level even with another decline. I really like the rest of the team though, it would be awesome if the team time-trial was a bit stronger, but Beniusis and Kmieliauskas should bring in a lot of points regardless. I also like the cobbled duo of Tediashvili and Vahtra and I gotta mention the strong regional Baltic focus.

I like large and deep squads having utilised them myself in the last few years. But while Ekoi's squad is large, I'm not sure whether it has the actual depth in quality. Ranaweera, Paret-Peintre and Maxime Daniel are all fine leaders, but they might need to be better than just fine. Hodeg can at times do well and they'll probably need him at his best. If Ekoi can stay in the division then that should bode really well for their future.

This is a better example of depth and quality. Farantakis is coming off such an awful season that I wanna see him do well, but at the same time I can't really trust him. He's the team's top rider on paper now so hopefully he can come good. After that there are just so many very nice subtop riders. ELCO also boasts a strong team time-trial so with the correct planning I can see all these nice riders synergising for a strong scoring output. You also expect a team relegating from PT to do well in a lower division.

How well this team does is going to come down to Stannard in my opinion. He has the potential to be the top puncheur in PCT with a revamped calendar that should benefit him. I have no concerns about Rodrigues, he likely won't do the spectacular, but he'll rock solid and near the top of most of his races. I really like Rachid as a great domestique for him that could get a chance or two himself. Hayakawa is a sprinter that can punch above his weight, after that the depth is so so.

Dunbar gets better and better each year and I'd be shocked if he doesn't take the individual crown. Besides that I'm not sure the team is better than last year. Bagioli adds a new dimension and could also do very well with the new calendar, but Tenorio is not anywhere near to replicating what Adam Yates did last year. To be honest I would've loved to see him in CT. Depth-wise the team is okay, but how high they can finish will come down to Dunbar and Bagioli.

Ewan is looking to bounce back after a down year and PCT tends to be a division that is kinder for what should be the #2 ranked sprinter. Baska or Russo could be good lead out choices and there is a bevy of rouleurs so the support system in theory is there. Not sure both Harrison and Contreras are needed to cover sprinting in PCT. I see a similar overabundance with Edmondson, Paez and Cepeda Hernandez all supporting Van Niekerk who I'm not the biggest fan of. This team will be good, but I would've loved to see a more streamlined approach of team building behind Ewan.

Debesay wasn't really that good last year and he's gotten his first decline. Then again the competition on the cobbles might have slightly lessened. Still not very encouraging for what should be the team's top rider. Declines are the theme for this team. With the likes of Arndt, Paillot and Fraile projected as the other main scorers. Paillot is probably the key man, if he can manage to approach last season's numbers.

I misjudged Kraftwerk last year as their ToA approach didn't work for them anymore. If they go back again they'll have a different setup as they don't have a true mountain leader this time. Zabel has been a reliable sprinter with secondary leadership now falling to Turgis and Masnada. I've had a soft spot for Turgis so I hope he finds some better results this year. Masnada should be an adequate leader, but he probably doesn't have the same support around him that he had at Jura.

Ah Lierse. I seemingly always like this team more than I should, which is most likely my fault, not the manager's. Oomen is always in the conversation for best stage racer in PCT and Bonifazio is now a productive sprinter. The keys for this team getting over the hump will be Gamper's training and how well that pans out and the good number of depth pieces behind them. I'm jealous I don't have Potocki as he's developed into such a fine rider.

I really wanna root for this team, but I'm struggling to find the reason. Kelderman and Borges, two underperforming puncheurs on the same team. I like Kamberaj and Chiarello, but I'm afraid those two won't be enough and it's not like there was a huge investment made into a top up and coming talent. It's hard to see where all the money was spent.

Is Vakoc any better than Kelderman? He better be! Calmejane is awesome, but can those two work together, will they be kept apart? Another not obvious fit. Min, Quintana and Bouchard are all good climbers. They'll need some breakaways to really score enough though. Whether it's Wouters or Zingle, that's one sprinter too many behind Liu. This team is also bereft of time-trialing so I'm not sure if all the pieces can work together to give Laurens a 3rd season in PCT.

This team is probably the easiest to analyse. It's Coquard and McCarthy. If those two perform then this team should be fine, otherwise they'll more than likely be doomed. Tejada as a solid climber/stage racer and Jimenez Retana when he's not working for Coquard seem the best secondary scoring options. I expect to see this team in the breakaway a lot in the mountain stage races.

McCormick is another team I had pegged wrong and the make up of the squad is a bit different this time. I would've liked to see how far McNulty could take them, but Yates was outstanding last year so for this season it might actually be an improvement. Although the latter might have also been a better fit with Sosa who got some training. I thought maybe Narvaez would get some, since he's a really fun subtop rider and Bagioli is gone.

Minions are primarily led by three 'old heads' in Kinoshita, Ahlstrand and Cattaneo. The Japanese puncheur is still among the very best in the game and should spearhead their season. Ahlstrand and Cattaneo are getting on, but considering their main stats they should still be good leaders. Newly trained Bjerg leads the Minions TT efforts and Kalaba is well entrenched as a 2nd sprinter that can at times perform like a primary one. The top of the team is old, but Minions have retained a strong squad after their relegation.

Lagane was an awesome rider before and even better now after training. And while he's a fairly unique rider he is riding in the same division as Demare and Ackermann which might make his slightly niche scoring less effective. Apart from Lagane the training hype was a bit overblown, at least in terms of impact. The team is largely the same one it was in CT and I don't really see that being enough to mount a survival challenge.

I've always had some doubts about Sauber, but they have persevered for a few years and things are looking up now. Hirschi is finally maxed and he looks set for a similar impact that someone like Higuita had last year. Frankiny and Azman add depth in those MO/HI races and Einhorn is back on a much cheaper wage. The other big difference and maybe slightly under the radar is the MO training of Misbah. Sauber now have a proper stage racer to pair with their other climbers. The days of fighting against relegation seem over.

This is probably the best PCT team Abhishek has assembled so far. Olivier and Benoot are top notch leaders for their terrains. Howson and Cataford should give good scoring from time-trials with the latter's versatility able to take on some more hybrid races. The Kuroeda's can always surprise in the cobbled races and overall there is good depth in the squad.

Specialized are a solid, consistent team and I don't see that changing this season. Kasperkiewicz comes in and I am expecting him to go toe to toe with Stallaert and Gamper for the top cobbler spot. Barguil should also give them a good climbing option in the less TT focused races. Meurisse is what he is which is good, can he do even better without Turgis on the team? The depth is okay, but they might take a small step back if Dzamastagic isn't the same successful late attacker with his decliine.

When I sold Enger to Bjartne I was thinking he'll be great to lead their sprinting department with Waersted and Bertilsson. I didn't expect further additions in Ackermann, Liepins and Berger?! Fair enough Ackermann is a bit of a maverick and a different rider, but still... that's simply too much overlap in my opinion. There is no mountain, cobbles or time-trial leader to go along with the sprinters. I wanna see how the planning unfolds, because I'm not convinced this will 'work'.

Given this might be the last season for this team I thought one of the big guns like Padun or Aniolkowski would have gotten some notable training. But the team is largely the same, no real additions. Just some riders maxing and others declining. Nothing too exciting and I would think they will be a ways off from both promotion and relegation.

I like what UBS did in transfers. Godoy should be a good MO leader in PCT and Buchmann should enjoy not going up against Areruya in most races anymore. We'll see how the training of Jacobs turns out, but I think it's a decent one. I can see him mostly replacing the scoring Spengler provided last season. There is solid depth and a TT setup here if needed. The wildcard is Perera who was a revelation in PT and helped Aker to the title. Perhaps he can lift UBS to the promotion spots?

When we talk about Tryg we need to look at Demare first. He didn't perform quite as well as you would hope, so I think there is room for improvement despite a decline. THJ should be a great 2nd scoring option with loads of U25 points adding to his totals. I'm a fan of the Ovsya cobble training. not because I'm convinced it will be great, but it's just really cool. I do believe he could replace the scoring of Summerhill last year. I think Tryg has a good chance of improving on last season's ranking of 15th.

A purely subjective prediction, it tends to be fairly accurate although that's not really the point. It's supposed to give people something to read, preview the season and get them talking. That doesn't really seem to be happening the last couple of years as this style is not engaging. So I'm probably not going to do them anymore.
As I said, the ranking is subjective. I know some have posted their schedules etc. in their HQs, but that's not really something I considered. The ranking is largely based on my own ideas and team building methods. I definitely prefer a setup where there is depth that can synergize into more scoring that may appear.
The coefficient is a relative average score for each team to show which teams are of very similar quality.

I do it myself and it seems like I'm doing it again!
I'm seemingly digging my own grave with Lierse in the top spot, although to be fair in the 2022 prediction I only got them wrong by one place, so maybe I'm more accurate again this time. Compared to last year I don't see a clear favourite for the title, nor do I feel particularly confident on who will finish top 5.
The division doesn't seem that strong to me. Likely due to the fact of only 3 relegated teams from PT and 7 coming up from CT. Also some of the 'mainstays' might have used these transfers to improve their futures rather than target immediate promotion.
The bottom is not that much different. I only see two teams that don't have a lot of chances to stave off relegation. Most of the teams are quite bunched together, too bunched. The fact I had a hard time separating teams between each other probably doesn't bode well for the prediction as a whole. Maybe I'm getting influenced by my recent experiences in PT.
I'm not good at writing long posts, so this is it for the preview.

Yeah, I always overrate my team as well
Looking at this excellent preview, I think our top 10 expectations should be met. Definitely some stronger teams out there, but also enough teams that should finish behind us.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I agree with your thoughts about my team. Maybe Gaudu and Cort would have been good depth additions
Also a great overview for the division, I'm curious how the ranking preview will look like.

Looking forward to the rankings. Would love to train Narvaez but feels like to really make a difference I need to do multiple trainings; and not sure I can commit the money and the time to that. He is a guy that the two training limit hurts as I could make an impact with less money but would have to do it over multiple seasons.

So far I agree with your assessment of our squad. Can only raise my level of agreement if you predict us outside the relegation zone

I also agree with your assessment. On paper we have plenty of riders to score, but I don't know how they will fit when racing together

Solid and consistent are two words that seem to be repeated across every preview for us this season, just hope that we swoop into the top 10 off of my planning being better than last year.

I'm not as high on my side as you are, I feel like we lost more scoring than we necessarily replaced, but this was always going to be the transitional year that worries me.
If your last line on our team is correct for this year then I think we are in a good position to keep improving.

TTT could've been stronger indeed, but I was messing around too much to get Akhmaevi back. Baltic appreciation is appreciated

The first preview which sees us on a relegation spot is not good news (though a great read in general), but with 20th position and only a small gap to safety it's clearly not catastrophically bad news either. Thanks for the effort, red!

I really liked the coefficient scale to measure the strength between the teams, it's seemingly very tight, and as expected we will be fighting with all we got to keep afloat in this division. I think both promotion and relegation can be an open fight until the very end.
Thanks alot for your time and effort redordead! |
