Hanko Classic
Welcome to Finland for the 6th edition of the Hanko Classic. The Finnish sprint classic, held in early June uses the same course used in its sister Baltic Chain Tour which means riders that had competed there would already be familiar with it. Who was on top last year?
1 | Lionel Coutinho | Assa Abloy | 4h20'00 | 2 | Elias Afewerki | Project: Africa | s.t. | 3 | Jonas Ahlstrand | Volcanica - Fox | s.t. | 4 | Mark Dzamastagic | HelloFresh - Lampre | s.t. | 5 | Fabio Silvestre | Bralirwa - Stevens | s.t. | 6 | Sondre Holst Enger | Gjensidige Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 7 | Leigh Howard | Indosat Ooredoo | s.t. | 8 | Theo Reinhardt | Crabbe-CC Chevigny | s.t. | 9 | Kristoffer Halvorsen | Red Bull Zalgiris | s.t. | 10 | Andrea Guardini | Caja Rural Cycling Team | s.t. |
Assa Abloy were the ones to be joyful in Finland as Lionel Coutinho
finished first. And the Portuguese will be returning to defend his title - this time defending the colors of Lampre-Pinarello. The runner-up - Elias Afewerki, will also be back and he also changes team allegiances as he would be in the colors of newly promoted Colombini Cycling. The odd one out is the bronze medalist and 2019 winner Jonas Ahlstrand - he can't return even if he wanted to as he's now competing in the bright yellow-blue color scheme of the Minnions, who are in the PT division. Lampre will have double firepower as Dzamastagic also returns. Bralirwa - Stevens will once again count on Silvestre, while DK Zalgiris are placing their hopes again on Halvorsen.
Rider | FL | ST | RS | SP | AC | Groenewegen | 73 | 74 | 71 | 82 | 81 | Dainese | 76 | 75 | 76 | 81 | 82 | Halvorsen | 76 | 74 | 71 | 81 | 80 | Abdul Halil | 70 | 71 | 68 | 81 | 79 | Degenkolb | 73 | 68 | 66 | 81 | 76 | Manninen | 74 | 71 | 75 | 81 | 80 | Vesely | 73 | 74 | 68 | 81 | 80 | Haller | 72 | 72 | 71 | 80 | 79 | Bonifazio | 79 | 68 | 75 | 80 | 80 | Silvestre | 77 | 68 | 69 | 79 | 79 | Afewerki | 73 | 77 | 70 | 79 | 80 | Rojus | 75 | 66 | 74 | 79 | 78 | Kennett | 75 | 73 | 76 | 79 | 78 | Havik | 73 | 74 | 68 | 79 | 76 | Krieger | 71 | 71 | 74 | 79 | 79 |
Last year's winner Coutinho is nowhere to be seen in this list unfortunately - this ultimately shows how loaded the field is with the winner from the previous edition is not present in the Top 15. Halvorsen, Silvestre and Afewerki were in the Top 10 and will be looking to grab that illusive win. 2021 winner Manninen and his Los Pollos Hermanos team are back in PCT after a shortlived 2022 PT campaign which means that they're gunning for a second win (in the short history of the race thre's no 2-time winner). But the stats currently favour Fastend's Groenewegen, who sits 3rd in the overall PCT Individual Ranking and right after him is the overall leader Dainese. For the record, only Groenewegen, Dainese, Manninen (7th) and Halvorsen (13th) will compete here from the Top 15 riders in PCT.
Rider | FL | ST | RS | SP | AC | FT | Konychev | 82 | 77 | 78 | 76 | 75 | 76 | Cherkasov | 80 | 72 | 74 | 70 | 75 | 65 | Ruiz | 79 | 73 | 71 | 73 | 75 | 67 | Dzamastagic | 78 | 76 | 72 | 76 | 78 | 78 | Rickaert | 78 | 75 | 75 | 75 | 73 | 67 | English | 78 | 74 | 73 | 71 | 75 | 59 | Rowe | 77 | 74 | 68 | 78 | 78 | 74 | Houle | 77 | 75 | 70 | 78 | 77 | 69 | Havik | 77 | 74 | 73 | 70 | 69 | 75 | Varga | 77 | 76 | 73 | 65 | 80 | 83 |
Though unlikely, the possibility exists for a surprise attack in the final kilometers. Konychev and Cherkasov ar the two riders from this bunch with FL rating of >=80, but Konychev has superiot ST and RS ratings. We have to point out that in the race's relatively short history the race had always ended in a bunch sprint, but based on our experience in Köln weeks before - anything is possible.
And as we end the preview show, here's the start list. Join us on IESN1 for the race coverage.
Spoiler Last name | First name | Team | Konychev | Alexander | Assa Abloy | Dainese | Alberto | Assa Abloy | Veyhe | Torkil | Assa Abloy | Magnusson | Kim | Assa Abloy | Gibbons | Ryan | Assa Abloy | Hänninen | Jaako | Assa Abloy | Rickaert | Jonas | Assa Abloy | Bergstrom Frisk | Erik | Assa Abloy | Silvestre | Fabio | Bralirwa - I have 0 expectations here, we have a super strong leadout, if allowed, that can also go for late attacks! Thanks for the preview!

Top 10 would be great, but there's zero pressure on Silvestre after his Norway heroics. Would appreciate if we put someone in the breakaway though. Other than that, I have my fingers crossed for Manninen and Afewerki, and hypothetical money on Dainese. Good luck everyone and thanks for the preview ivan!

Crossing my fingers we can replicate the victory of last year. Dainese has been in good form lately and hopefully it continues here. No doubt some tough competition, though
Thanks for the preview!

Hopeful of a good result here - Abdul Halil hopefully not considered worthy enough for a lead out and can hopefully jump on the right wheel. Would take any placing in the top-10 really. Good luck to everyone else, I wonder if Manninen can strike back here.
Thanks for the preview!

Thanks for the nice preview, Ivan!
Manninen has some making up to do, so let's see if he still got it.

Thanks ivan for the preview!
No expectations for this one. Maybe Liepins can surprise with a top-10, you never know.
Hopefully Manninen can deliver on home soil!

No great expectations but hoping the good Vesely shows up here! Flat team is also decent to try late attacks.
Thanks for the preview

Oh... don't like this result. Back to "awful mode" for the top favourites, commiserations to them. Unfortunately we can't see how the sprint unfolded on that final kilometer; the only thing that looks pretty obvious is that Groenewegen launched too early. But Dainese was right in Afewerki's wheel, and still couldn't get going, while Halvorsen just was caught out of position. At least Vesely got another top result for Sony, and also Manninen somewhat delivered. As did Bonifazio, by the way, so @Ollfardh if you don't want his points, I'll take them
Abdul Halil also kind of expected to be fast, although I still dislike his statline. He delivers tons of points, though, which is what counts in the end - congrats to Indosat!
@Ivan, I don't quite get why you wrote that nobody would have expected him in the Top 20 when you have him in 4th position in the preview?
Funny to see the CT fight between Crabbe and Stela-Vita moving on at C1 level, with both Liepins and Kamberaj obviously overperforming once again The most notorious overperformer is anyway Afewerki, though
Thanks for the report to Ivan, I prefer following these messy sprint classics from the outside, though

No no, let's not do that, you have enough points already.

The streak of meh results continue for us Always nice to see the legendary Abdul Halil win though, the man has definitely learned a thing or two something during his loan spell last year Congratulations Eden!
Thank you for the report, Ivan!

Certainly a surprise to see Abdul Halil pull that off what an awesome victory for him! I guess he was just on a really good day, we were working in the peloton when there were many better riders on the favourites list so I guess he was feeling good. What a season he is having, definitely exceeded expectations for us already.
Strange to see most of the top guys underperform so bad - usually classics this season have been quite alright in comparison to stage races. Commiserations especially to roturn for Groenwagen here.
@Nemo: I think you might be on to something, he appears to have learned quite a bit from Manninen
@Fab: I don’t like his stat line either, but I very much like his wage (for now)
Thank you very much for the report!

Congrats Eden! For us a terrific overachievement from Liepins finishing 4th. For PCT teams that could use every point, it must undoubtedly be frustrating. Hopefully we can fix this next season.
Thanks ivan for the report!
