Welcome to the 9th edition of the Geraardsbergen-Bosberg classic. The profile remains the same as in previous years, ten and a half circuits of a route consisting of two hills and three cobbled sections. It is always a challenging course that can end with an attack from distance or a small group contesting the uphill sprint. As such the race demands a lot from the riders. Climbing, punch, riding on cobbles all the while making it a race of attrition over 200 km.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | CB | SP | AC | Gaday | 71 | 67 | 75 | 75 | 72 | 78 | 71 | 73 | Owen | 73 | 65 | 69 | 73 | 71 | 78 | 64 | 71 | Breen | 76 | 61 | 69 | 70 | 70 | 77 | 72 | 70 | Trentin | 71 | 57 | 71 | 71 | 66 | 78 | 72 | 71 | Tediashvili | 73 | 66 | 69 | 74 | 76 | 74 | 69 | 71 | Chatarunga | 72 | 56 | 67 | 79 | 72 | 77 | 70 | 68 | Paprstka | 75 | 62 | 69 | 74 | 70 | 75 | 70 | 72 | Havik | 73 | 56 | 64 | 74 | 68 | 76 | 79 | 76 | Kulppi | 73 | 59 | 67 | 73 | 69 | 77 | 65 | 70 | Schäppi | 72 | 64 | 67 | 74 | 72 | 76 | 66 | 68 | Kaislavuo | 73 | 65 | 70 | 73 | 73 | 73 | 67 | 72 |
Gaday without a doubt has the best mix of stats for a race like this. With teammate Owen being of his main competitors on paper, the Strava duo should have a big influence on how the race goes. Breen lacks a bit of climbing compared to the latter two, but is strong elsewhere and also has a very strong team. Trentin's climbing and resistance can be major weaknesses for him in what is usually a hard race.
Tediashvili is not the best cobbler, but a competent climber with good energy stats. Somewhat similar to last year's winner Paprstka who is back to defend his title. Chatarunga and Havik are more suited to flat roads, maybe they ride aggressively to get up the road before the final climb. Schäppi has no standout stat, but that gives him some flexibility to adjust to the race situation. Kulppi and Kaislavuo are different, one the pure cobbler the other a better climber. Tafjord has lots of options for this race.
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | CB | SP | AC | Rathe | 73 | 63 | 66 | 74 | 71 | 73 | 74 | 76 | Lampaert | 75 | 60 | 66 | 74 | 73 | 78 | 60 | 61 | Matthews | 72 | 61 | 66 | 70 | 67 | 75 | 76 | 76 | Robeet | 76 | 61 | 67 | 72 | 75 | 74 | 67 | 69 | Skala | 74 | 56 | 71 | 70 | 72 | 74 | 66 | 71 | Yechezkel | 74 | 55 | 64 | 71 | 72 | 76 | 64 | 73 | Nielsen | 75 | 54 | 67 | 71 | 75 | 74 | 73 | 71 | Van der Hoorn | 75 | 60 | 70 | 76 | 69 | 75 | 56 | 66 | Taubel | 73 | 59 | 65 | 69 | 73 | 78 | 61 | 64 | Campbell | 74 | 63 | 68 | 69 | 68 | 74 | 68 | 73 | Bovenhuis | 73 | 58 | 71 | 74 | 70 | 74 | 62 | 68 | Insausti | 70 | 53 | 64 | 76 | 73 | 77 | 57 | 66 | Batmunkh | 73 | 54 | 65 | 72 | 72 | 73 | 74 | 74 | Richardson | 71 | 61 | 67 | 68 | 68 | 78 | 60 | 61 | Schlechter | 73 | 58 | 71 | 69 | 65 | 74 | 60 | 64 |
This list mostly features domestiques and subtop riders who will try to enter the fight for the higher places. Teams like Podium Ambition and Fastned have several riders that can do that and they'll hope one of them works out. Anyone of these riders getting into the breakaway could also be a threat to the favourites.

Thanks Abhi for the preview Again all eyes on Chatarunga for our team.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Strava and Tafjord dominate again.
Good luck everybody!

I'll take a Top20 but based on form that may be asking too much. Gaday to win surely?!

2nd cobbled C2 race for us - and pretty surprised to see Tediashvili so high up on the list. But with his 9th place in G-W, he has already shown that he can hold his own against stronger cobblers - given that he's pretty well-rounded and no slouch on the hills, there are hopes he can confirm this result. A Top 15 will do, with Kosic hopefully being useful as well.
Thanks for the preview, and good luck to all!

Four in the Top20, sounds good but deliveres surprisingly few points at this level. Quite nice to Hasani mixing it up, and Matthews doing solidly (i keep saying, if he was 26yo i'd do nothing but train him forever, shame he's about to decline). Chequan not really paying off the investment, but he was far more RP than Points intent as a signing so i'm not complaining.
I said Gaday would win (because I need to prove i do know what good riders are, and i'm only hampered by my own insistence on this crazy project)

Congrats Strava on another win and thanks Abhi for the report!
We’re thrilled with a podium for Chatarunga, that’s the best possible outcome for this race.

Wow, what a race by Tediashvili! I was looking out for him all race long - only to see him sprint to 3rd and then realizing he was wearing a more "white" jersey than the rest of the team, being the Georgian NC
A podium is definitely far above expectations here, and until the start of this year would've been our best cobbles result ever. Great job, Tedia, and also nice to see Kosic getting another 25th place with the final point
Congrats to Strava, Gaday, definitely the logical and well-deserved winner here! Strong race by Chatarunga for 2nd place, maybe his big engine just made him outlast the rest of the pack and making up for lower puncheur skills. On the other hand, pretty surprised to see Eriksson in 5th - almost suggesting that cobbles skills don't actually matter a lot in this race... Anyway, good for Tafjord to get something out of this one, with Breen having an off-day.
Thanks for the report to Abhi.
PS: You had me worried at some point that I completely screwed up my planning:

Ok race for us. Surprised to see Taubel doing this bad in this race tough.

He was in the breakaway, so that could be the explanation. Although it's strange to see a 78 CB doing this as an outsider.

Exactly. I don't expect my best cobble rider to go in the breakaway, so this was really strange. If he had been in the peloton at the end, his chances for a podium would have been really high IMO.

I don't think I'd agree on that, sorry. Looking at the Top 5, it looks like solid hill and good stamina were key in the end (the latter definitely isn't wrong after 200km), and Taubel isn't strong in either. Looking at the Breen/Eriksson outcome for Tafjord, it looks like PCM actually favoured strong puncheurs here.
I agree it was weird to see Taubel up front, but given his weaknesses I don't think it was the worst strategy. On the other hand, Livyns is doing a great job for you - I'm honestly not sure if Taubel could've done better here. I'd expect races like Faso with long flat cobbles to suit him much more, though.

Huh, Eriksson crushing Breen in this race doesn't make much sense, but happy we atleast got a top 5 when the circumstances was like that with Breen.
Congrats to Strava, our cobble-nemesis
Thanks Abhi!! |
