The end of the season report
Well, the 2022 MGUCI 'regular' season has finished and the finally standings have finally been revealed. Some will celebrate and others will have to seriously think about what went wrong for them. In the CT division, ivaneurope's team has entered its 6th season in the CT looking for moving up to the brighter lights of the PCT division (there was a brief excursion in the PCT, but we'd rather not talk about it). Again, under the BWT Hyundai N mantle the team tackled the CT calendar after a lot to be desired in 2021. And the season had its fair share of ups and downs, but at the end of it we could call this the best season this team has ever had. We came a long way - from being the basement dweller, through being mid at best to now challenging for promotion at best.
Prior to the last few updates (until update #8) we were sitting in P5 which was the final place that gives automatic promotion to the PCT. The surprise Windhoek TTT win, where our expectation was to have a good performance, gave us some hope that we could make it. That is until I've realised that I've not sent a competitive lineup for Tour of America. Don't get me wrong - the end result there was better than I expected, but when you fight for promotion and compete in a race that gives a lot of points, sending an inferior to you competition squad could be fatal. And while the team was focused on BNZ and their promotion aspirations (also the battle of the pink B's), we totally forgot about Tryg and their chances and promotion. As it turned out Tryg jumped from 11th to 5th and went into the distance in distance in a blink of an eye.
This meant that 6th place would be the best that will hope for given the opportunities it presents (will get to that), but for this we had to fend it off from BNZ and Caja Rural. Herald Sun Tour was next and perhaps at first glance it seemed that not sending Brändle (our top TT'er given that this race is decided in a TT stage) was the wrong decision, but in reality Ahmad Zamri did well enough in the TT stage to finish 6th overall giving us vital ranking points. At Euskal Bizikleta Pernsteiner had a decent enough race to finish 9th overall, but considering that Schultz from BNZ finished 5th the final race - Zuri Mezgette will decide everthing. And BNZ had the better trio puncheurs with Edmondson being one of the heavy favorites, while our hilly riders like Pernsteiner and Robov were considered as wildcards for Top 10 position. In the end we've managed to defend the 6th place by having Robov in 12th and Pernsteiner in 14th. Our 6th place was further confirmed by the results from the HC classified Giro dell'Emilia where several of the CT teams competed.
While this season is the best we've ever had, the 6th place is a curse and blessing at the same time. But why? Well, as you may or may not know only the Top 5 teams gain an automatic promotion. The 6th place (as well as teams 7th-9th) is very unique position to be in the PCT/CT as you don't know for sure where would you be next season. Disbandements of teams happen all the time which results in teams that came up short to get a ticket to an upper echelon. Also, we have to take into an account that this season there were 24 PCT teams compared to 26 the seasons before, which was rather due to the large number of disbanding teams and the shallow CT pool last season. And while I'd prefer in this case promotion via expansion, rather than waiting on a team above to withdraw, this is outside my control - it's up to the MGUCI to decide. For now we have to enter renewals with both scenarios (promoted to PCT or staying in CT) in mind. Tough decisions will come.

Wouldn't jump to such conclusions yet until it's officially confirmed by the MGUCI. Though I'd love to go back to PCT. It sucks that it may be at the expense of someone else rather on finishing in the Top 5, but can't control external factors.
Hopefully this time I'll learn from the mistakes made during my previous experience in the PCT. One thing for sure is to not sign a climber/puncheur who can't do TT on a large contract. And another dilemma I'll have during renewals is what should I do with my aging core?

The biggest contributor and the only rider to pass the 200 point mark was Kozhatayev. Entering his second season with the team, the Kazakh rider was one of the key pieces in both TTT race wins and also scored great results in important races. Unfortunately his efforts didn't led to a GC victory in one of the stage races he was entered.
Brändle was the next best rider and another key component of the TTT train, but perhaps he underwhelmed during the season. In some races with an ITT like the Hong Kong Challenge he was in a prime spot for the win, but his pace diminished once the punchy hill stages came (in our circle we like to call this the reverse Preidleritis). Perhaps we've wanted too much from him considering his strong TT skill
Andrew Fenn also has a huge total tally, but for his cobbled skills it was a letdown that he failed to win a single cobble race during the course of the season. That distinction fell to another acquisition from the transfer market in Tomas Paprstka. Hastely acquired for salary and roster reasons, the Czech cobbler was meant to be a supporting figure for Fenn, but instead he gave the team their first cobble win in Geraardsbergen - Bosberg with the points there being crucial early on. Unfortunately Richardson and Losch disappointed severely with Tzortzakis scoring nearly 20 points more than them combined.
It looked like that the signing Pernsteiner would be a disaster even though he had 4th place in Coppa Placci. That is, until the last few races. In Tour of America he managed to get some decent stage finishes and 3rd in KoM. Then he was 9th GC in Euskal Bizikleta and 14th in the Zuri Metzgete which proved to be decisive though not for the 5th place, but were enough to hold off the competition for 6th. Robov, who had similar surge last season, unfortunately underperformed, but he did contribute in Zurich as well with his 12th place. The Bulgarian RR NC did win a stage in Chile as well.
More was expected from Ahmad Zamri, Jacobsen and Tusveld. Considering his MO stat, Ahmad Zamri's tally was even more undewhelming with Stoenchev (a TT specialist only) finishing ahead of him. Jacobsen showed a lot of promise last season - this season however was fairly anonymous. In the end these four riders were contributors to our 2 TTT wins which boosted their morale.
Last, but not least - there are Vine, Hocevar and Kolev. Wasn't expecting any miracles from them and especially from Hocevar and Kolev who entered their first full season and it was a learning season for them. Vine did however had some surprising performances during Tour of America - finishing on the podium on the final stage by finishing 3rd and early on he had one 4th place.
But what next? We failed to promote by finishing in the Top 5. Though the team is projected to get a promotion via disbandment, the team had learned with great sadness that it will be due to Isostar's sudden withdrawal. Which is a shame that Croatia14 has decided to end the project after winning the PT's team crown 3 times in a row, but perhaps his wish was to bookend his 7-year journey while he's on the top of the mountain. On behalf of all the riders and staf, and myself the team would like to thank him for all the memorable moments his team brought and to hope that this is not a definitve goodbye, but rather that we'll meet again.
The sudden promotion also means that some tough decisions have to be made. With some of the riders either in decline or will enter into decline it will be tricky come renewal season. Even though the PCT cap would give us some leeway, a competitive roster is essential to survive in an upper division. And therefore there may be some cuts

Just another season retrospective post.
And here is yet another season retrospective post - this time with our goals and whether or not we've reached them. So, did we?
 Volta a Catalunya
Goal - Finish in Top 5 GC
Best result - 2nd GC by Bakhtiyar Kozhatayev (goal accomplished)
This was one of the earliest races on the calendar with a TTT stage (you'd notice a pattern here). The goal was to get Kozhatayev in Top 5 and in the end he was 51 seconds shy of the overall victory.
 Tour of Vancouver
Goal - Win the GC
Best result - 6th by Bakhtiyar Kozhatayev (goal failed)
Unfortunately, the Tour of Vancouver didn't turn out as we hoped it will be as Kozhatayev finished outside the Top 5.
 Monterrey TTT
Goal - Win the race
Result - Win (Goal accomplished)
It was a no brainer that defending our Moterrey win from last season was one of our paramount goals. And the defense was successful, leaving behind even the strongest TTT teams. But that was not the end for this TTT train
 Windhoek TTT
Goal - Finish in the Top 5
Result - Win (Goal overachieved!!!)
With C2HC no longer a thing, CT teams had to pick up a series of C1 goals, but one would be selected at the end. At the start you'd think that we've overestimated our TTT capabilities - given that unlike say Monterrey, PCT teams can be at full strength. But yet, a CT team made everyone blush. And this was without a doubt even greater win than Monterrey given how unexpected it was.
Team Standings
Goal - Win
Result - 6th in the rankings (not close enough)
And yet again we've failed to win the team standings and as a matter of fact we couldn't end up 5th at the very least. 6th is...fine I guess and with promotion attached to it (even though I didn't like the circumstances, but it is, what it is) perhaps I'm not that mad that didn't accomplish that goal. But then again it was the least likely goal that would've been accomplished anyway.
And that wraps up our goals overview - with 3 goals accomplished out of 5, it was good season. Last season we also accomplished 3 out 5 goals, but this season we've went beyond in one of the goals (Windhoek TTT) and were closer in the team standings. And as it was mentioned promotion is on the horizon (though it needs to be officially confirmed) next season will be an even bigger challenge.

Congrats on all those achieved goals! 3/5, and narrowly missing out on another one is definitely a great result - even more so when going for 22 goal points (if I got that right)! Should be a great money rain for you - which should be pretty welcome, as with the average age of your team (> 29) there will probably be some kind of a rebuild anyway, no matter the division. If I'm not mistaken, of your Top 5 scorers only Kozhatayev won't be declining, so there's some work to do I guess 
I think you did a good job all season long. You had a rock solid roster, with Fenn probably being the only "star rider" - and at the same time probably the one you were most disappointed by. Kozhatayev obviously is a good CT-level stage race leader; most often he couldn't quite match the slightly stronger climbers uphill, but given your super strong TTT core he still scored some really nice results.
Brändle was a cool rider to have in CT even after his first decline, and he delivered - despite his obvious lack of punch.
Whereas you probably expected more points from Fenn, he still got a three-digit number (which imho isn't that bad given his total lack of uphill skills alongside pretty low energy stats). And I liked to see Pernsteiner having his final maxed year as a leader, after being Moscon's dom for the last two seasons. I guess you couldn't expect a lot more by him, given that he's no candidate for many stage races given his lack of TT skills.
On the downside, there's definitely Losch. The scoring difference is just insane if I compare him to Aregger or Stepniak, who both easily were in the three-digits zone. Looks like RES actually is a thing for sprinters, at least that could be a possible explanation. And unlike e.g. Aregger, he obviously can't be sent to races with more than just speed bumps... You also said you were disappointed by Richardson - but on one hand there was Fenn, so he wasn't selected as the team's leader, and on the other hand he really can just do cobbles. No climbing, no sprinting - and on top of that he's got low energy stats. I'm not that much surprised by his low scoring - but yeah, if you just look at the main stat, you'd certainly expect way more.
Overall, it looks like you'll promoting, so congrats on that achievement - and best of luck in your offseason decision finding and transfers!

Think you chose your race goals well and achieved 3/4 of them. The division win was always going to be tough with the competition you had. Think that should still be a fine sum to go into PCT with. Look forward to how things shape up for you there in your second attempt

Three goals achieved, promotion secured - id count it as a succesful season. Ofc, promotion via top5 would look so much better but the end result is the same and you can prepare for pct again.
Once again, you have quite a bit of a rebuild to do but coming from ct that will almost always be the case and with the likely disbands, the situation might be a better one than the last time you promoted.

Very solid year for you in the goals. Sucks to have two Win goals in 6th but the three achieved ones should be a nice little extra cash in hand for the off season to put the PCT team together.
Pretty sure I booed the Brandle price pre-season so have to take the L and apologise for that! Huge part of the TTT wins and did great individually as well obviously.

I think you had your doubts that I may've overpaid for Brändle. He was instrumental in our two TTT wins and had some individual TT glory here and there, but perhaps I was expecting too much. Maybe because I've put him in C1 races with little to no chance of win, or that I've split leadership with Kozhatayev in some C2 races (it worked in Trentino though with both in Top 10)

Considering that there are 2 confirmed disbands it looks like promotion is on the way (though I have to wait for the division changes thread to confirm this). And this time the situation could be slightly better as I hope to have learned from my past mistakes (e.g. not throwing lots of money at either declining veterans or for riders with piss-poor TT skill as my leaders). The thing is that who should I really retain and who has re-sale value. I'd most likely keep my NC champions Ahmad Zamri and De Luna (since having NC's is good publicity) - sure, 'Flash' De Luna (thanks KaiserAdler for the nickname) will start declining, but could still be a reliable hand and he'll most likely be on a minimum wage (or up to 65k). And would like to have some continuity on the TTT front (though it would need some tweaks for PCT despite the Windhoek win). Several riders will most likely have their wages reduced (chief amongst them Losch and maybe Robov) as well which will leave us some excess cap.
The two questions I have is what to do with Brändle and Kozhatayev. While it was worth taking the risk on Brändle this past season, I have my doubts on retaining him after renewals and the risk of overpaying him in his second year of decline which would make him unmoveable (should I choose to sell him). The truth is that he could still be very useful as a support act and if his OVL drops below the maximum for PCT eligibility in C2 races it could be a plus.
Kozhatayev on the other hand is a bit tricky puzzle to solve. While he's been the best rider we have at the present moment, he is not the type of rider that could be tasked on with the responsibilities of leading in PCT. And his OVL won't allow us to use him in C2 races either. The most likely route would be to sell him to a CT team that would need his talents. Perhaps these dilemmas I'll have to eventually figure them out myself, but I'm known for making rash decisions that would come to haunt me (like giving Lander 130k and selling him for pennies on the dollar when the sprinters market was not in demand).

The last write-up (for this season)
The season is now done with all of our riders participated in the national championships. How did they fared.
 Estonia

Estonia's NC races were paired with those of Belarus, Georgia, Israel and Liechtenstein. Siim Kiskonen (in Moser - Sygic colors) was 5th in the RR (7th overall) and 3rd in the TT (again, 7th overall)

Tormod Jacobsen didn't really had much of a chance in the Norwegian NC races. He ended in the midfield on both occasions.

 Netherlands

The Bulgarian and Bermuda NC's were paired together alongside the NC's of Cuba, Barbados and Slovakia. Robov had managed to defend his Bulgarian NC title from Papanov in a final sprint. In the Bermuda race Richardson was defeated by Podium Ambition's White, but he took the W in the TT race. Stoenchev had no problems conquering the Bulgaria TT title for a 5th time in a row.
Before concluding the team's 2022 HQ thread we'd announce that Max Losch, Bakhtayir Kozhatayev, Tomas Paprstka, Siim Kiskonen, Kristjan Hocevar and Andrew Fenn will compete in the World Championship races in Norway. The team wishes them good luck.
And that concludes our 2022 season. With everything team related settled, we now look towards the 2023 season despite uncertainty of which division we will be in.
