Not looking forward to seeing you in ToA - how about you can win every flat stage if Choi just loses 15 minutes on one of them? Pfft Excited to see the debut of Tiesj down under!

I would prefer not winning any flat stage and choi winning by 15 fifteen minutes.

Looking forward to Tiesj myself Grin

Down Under Classic
We were completely anonymous the whole race, with no participation in the break, nor could Van Asbroeck get into the thick of things in the sprint. Van Asbroeck finished 20th, which was our only points from this race.

Tour Down Under
A no-show from Minali on Stage 1 meant we didn't get anything.

Minali was nowhere to be seen on Stage 2 as well but Saya Kuroeda did well to mix it up with the sprinters and come away with a 6th place.

We concentrated on keeping Benoot safe and he repaid with a cool 2nd place finish on Stage 3, and was unlucky not to be given a gap to the peloton at the line!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/TdU/mg22_tdu_03_PCM0183.jpg

Benoot rode another strong Stage 4 to finish 9th in the reduced bunch sprint and pick up some important bonus seconds. This moved him up to 2nd in the GC after this stage.

Benoot could not repeat the same on Stage 5, finishing outside the Top 10, and slipping to 4th in the GC.

Minali finally showed up on Stage 6, sprinting to 5th place, to not come back empty handed from this race.

Benoot finished 4th in the GC, with Saya Kuroeda in 36th.

The first month of the season was a mixed bag, with the Tour Down Under making up for a rough start in the Down Under Classic. Still early days in the season, so we won't be reading too much from these results yet. Is it however, always nice to have some points on the board already.

Very solid start to Benoot's Philips career Down Under, and contributions from Saya and Minali too Smile

Great start for Benoot indeed! Too bad TVA couldn't repeat last year's performance at the DUC, but I'm sure he'll be extra motivated to get a strong result in his next race now Smile

@jandal: Promising start from Benoot for sure, and Saya also. Minali could've done a little better but it's still early days I guess.

@Nemolito: Benoot did well, I agree. TVA will have his chance to improve very soon at Omloop, albeit in a supporting role.

Out first cobbles race of the season and a chance to see the Brothers of Destruction in action as leaders. Saya started of his season quite well in Australia and will hope to continue that here. Interesting and pretty loaded month for you ahead! Benoot should really be THE man to beat in Portugal, while your lineup for the other cobbled races is pretty strong as well. Great roster for the first wildcard race, too Smile

I think Choi could do a great job in Ukraine; the prologue should suit him well given the uphill second half. Obviously there are better specialists, especially given it's a PTHC race, but I can see him do pretty well there. And with 3 days you aren't taking a huge risk anyway.

Juarez will be a lottery as well, you just have to hope Minali gets the winning ticket there. Probably not the best/most complete sprinter, but that doesn't really matter, you just need to be lucky enough.

Good luck!

Think you covered our month quite well, although I don't really think I share the same amount of enthusiasm for our cobbles team without Benoot. Kuroedas should be good, but don't think they will be good enough to be up near the top. Hoping Benoot can do well in Viana. Choi's Ukraine result will be a bonus for us, that's how we are treating it anyway. We hope he can do something though. Juarez is a lottery and we just hope to get lucky a few times with Minali throughout the season, both in Juarez and elsewhere.. Let's see if that happens.

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
Our cobbles team for the season will depend on consistency rather than explosiveness to get points. We did exactly that in this race. While none of our riders could stay with the decisive moves in the closing stages, Shiki, Van Asbroeck and Saya rode their own steady pace to finish 13th, 19th and 20th. Three riders in the Top 20 is better than we came here expecting.

Viana do Castelo
Benoot was top favourite for this race but we know how those kind of things usually work out. While he stayed attentive at the front, we lacked any real support to make the race a hard one. A reduced pack reached the finish behind the late attacking winner, with Benoot taking 5th from the former.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/C1/Viana/pics/30.jpg

While this was not a disaster, we were definitely hoping for better from this race.

Le Samyn
Almost an identical lineup to Omloop but the race turned out to be much harder for the riders here. saya Kuroeda finished 26th to salvage some points and ensure we did not come back empty handed.

Classique du Grand Duché
This was supposed to be a fun outing as a wildcard team, which it was, but it also a bit boring as Benoot rode under the radar to finish 9th. Eenkhoorn finished 23rd, with three more rider from positions 27 to 31.

Tour of Ukraine
We brought Choi to this race hoping the hilly TTs can play to his favour. It worked on Stage 1 as he finished a creditable 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Tour%20of%20Ukraine/S1/20221029143624_1.jpg

He did not do that well in the second stage though, as the hills were raced too hard. He fell to 18th in the GC as a result. Velasco joined the break and finished 13th.

Choi recovered well in the final stage ITT, getting a 9th place on the stage and rising to 13th in the GC. While this experiment wasn't a resounding success, it wasn't a complete failure either.

Circulo de Juarez
Minali showed up on Stage 2 to get a very good 3rd place finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Juarez/pics/2j14.jpg

He got 11th in the GC courtesy the bonus points he got on that day.

Stoltz joined the break on Stages 3 and 5, and picked up some points to finish 5th in the KOM classification.

Fabianski
Agree, Viana do Castelo hurts, definitely not what could be expected of Benoot. As you say, the team probably was too weak to make the race hard enough for him...

The other cobbled races were OK, I guess - at least looking at both of them combined. One better than expected, the other rather poor, but yeah, without a top level cobbler I guess that's pretty realistic.

Choi was pretty disappointing in Ukraine I'd say, especially given that Bernal and Haig aren't any stronger in the hills and did much better iirc. Minali probably lacks a bit in everything compared with the other sprinters in Juarez, so 11th isn't a really bad result. Look at Reinhardt's results for comparison Pfft

redordead
Two good TTs from Choi makes Ukraine a success. 11th for Minali looks fantastic from my perspective, but I don't know what scoring points looks like so I'm not the best judge.

@Fabianksi: Yeah I guess I should've sent at least one more stronger helper to Viana. That was a big chance missed. Agree on the cobbles, overall probably on par but Samyn was a bit disappointing. Was hoping Choi wouldn't lose so much time on the hill stage in Ukraine, but we rarely ever get the luck needed for such things, so not surprised. Both this and Juarez was an ok result, nothing special or disastrous.

@redordead: I was hoping for such TTs from Choi, so that part he did well. The hill stage wasn't great, so we can't call the race a success. Minali did ok in Juarez like I mentioned above, but it doesn't really help us much. Needed at least one more Top 10 stage result from him to make it a success.

Minali has had a hit and miss season so far and we don't expect much from this race, given it is PTHC and will have an even stronger startlist. We hope one of the Kuroedas can take the challenge with a late attack, but maybe that's a bridge too far.

More of the same for us in cobbles for the season, with the hope that we see more of the Omloop type of performance rather than the Samyn type. The Kuroedas and Van Asbroeck will lead the charge with us not fielding a full squad, as is the case with most cobbles races this season.
Expectation: Top 20
Watch Out For: Tom Van Asbroeck

Fabianski
That's quite some classics for you this month! The cobbles could very well continue to be hit-or-miss, but Lillestrom might be decent for van Asbroeck if the cobbles aren't too hard.

The clash between Strade and Kerekparverseny is definitely unlucky, with Benoot being the best suited rider for both. But given that the latter is just a wildcard race, it's not as bad as it could be Wink And Benoot definitely should like the tough race in Italy, let's see if his Acc is enough to get a top result!

GORC could go either way, as you said. Minali is just a tad too weak to always be among the top favorites, but on a good day he can get some good points Smile

So there's Colombia left... The strongest mountain team possible you say - I'd actually expect Penasa in there as well in that case. I'm rather surprised to see Choi instead of PPP tbh, given the lack of a TT - but the latter obviously still is the better climber. Good luck for the Top10 goal, won't be easy!

AbhishekLFC
Think you pretty much covered it from our end.

For Colombia, what I meant was that this is the strongest possible mountain support team we could put up. Choi got the nod here ahead of Penasa because this is a Goal race. Otherwise, non-TT event does favour Penasa. Picked races in such a way that our two climbers do not overlap anywhere, so there was no way to have them together here or in any other non-wildcard race.

Probably should've checked the calendar more closely when picking Kerekparverseny as the top priority cobbles wildcard. Should've gone with Appia Antica in hindsight; Benoot could've raced there.

Great Ocean Road Classic
We did not join the break, we did not chase, no one was able to make a late dash for the win, and Minali did not show up for the sprint. A nothing race for us.

Vuelta a Colombia
The flat Stage 1 was a chance for Minali to redeem himself after Great Ocean. He did show up for the sprint but managed 8th in the end.

A very tough Stage 2 saw Choi follow all the right moves and finish in the group behind the lone winner for 4th on the stage and in the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S2/PCM0020.jpg

Stage 3 was another hard mountain stage, with Leemreize joining the break this time. Choi was once again very attentive near the front, once even attacking to try to get away with 6 km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/PTHC/Colombia/S3/PCM0010.jpg

It didn't work but he was again able to follow all the moves right up until the end when he lost some time, finishing 7th on the stage but still maintaining his GC spot.

Stage 4 was flat again but Minali decided to take the day off, probably tired from all the climbing on the previous two days.

Back to climbing on Stage 5. Same story as stage 3 with Choi losing some time at the end. But this time, it caused him to fall a place in the GC.

Raileanu and Leemreize joined the break on Stage 6. Neither were strong enough to stay at the front for very long though. Choi finished in the group of favourites behind the successful breakaway to secure 5th in the GC.

Eenkhoorn finished 3rd in the U25s with Leemreize in 5th. They also finished 35th and 41st in the GC respectively, with Raileanu in 49th.

Macskako Kerekparverseny
Second wildcard race of the year saw a Kuroeda join the attacks and represent us. We didn't have enough firepower to challenge at the front for the finish.

Strade Bianche
We did a lot of work at the front with Velasco in support of Benoot. The latter stayed with the lead group all through, following all attacks and riding near the front without to much effort. In the sprint up the hill to the finish, Benoot was able to come through from behind and take 2nd, narrowly missing out the win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Reports/HC/Strade/mg22_strade_38.jpg

Lillestrom GP
First one Kuroeda attacked and joined the break. Then the other decided to do the same! Unfortunately, the break did not survive and in hindsight, it was not the wisest move to have them both go for it. Van Asbroeck had a weak day as well but McLay was able to hang on to one of the leading groups and win the sprint for 9th place. Not the depth points we were expecting, but realistically, we were not expecting a Top 10 placing either.

We have done well this month with points coming in three of the four terrains. It's just our sprinting that has been woeful so far this season, and it does not look like improving any time soon. Concentrating on the good though, Colombia and Strade Bianche were excellent results, with the former ensuring we get our first goal of the season. Looking forward to the ranking updates.

Expectation: Top 10
Watch Out For: Tiesj Benoot

Not a very busy month for us, with Benoot likely to take up all the headlines, or so we hope. Not that we do not have any hopes from California, and look forward to a good showing there as well.
