[CT 21] Glanbia Foods Cycling Project- The Season Review

Target:Top 15 (or 25 even),
By far our weakest terrain but we’re here to give it our best !
In fact, this year we hope Dadley Coprwin can get us at least some points in the cobbled classics. His cobbles skill (76) is ok but his hills and other stats mean he isn’t considered a favourite of any standing.
In fact he didn’t feature at all finishing 49th. Glanbia’s top rider was Matthew Teggart, an up and coming Irish classics rider who took 31st. Seems our attempt at raiding some cobblestone points lacks a sense of reality!
Result 31st
Tour of Catalunya
Target: Top 3
A nothing day to start with as Martin, Brandt and Craddock all finish in a reduced peleoton.
Sam Bennett was here for this stage 2 and he does ok taking fourth place.
Day 3, our first TTT of the year! We’re ranked 3rd favourite and that’s where we end up. Still though losing a minute to Aramco might end up hurting out Top 3 challenge.
Day 4 is Queen Stage and Dan Martin’s type of stage. His form must have been left at the breakfast table and he finished a miserable 27th place. Thanks to our good TT he only drops to 13th in GC but a podium seems out the window.
Day 5 looks like an ideal day for the break and indeed Haas and Oram join a group of 16. It ends up in a 40 man sprint though, Martin lsoing no more time.
Day 6 and I’m resigned to missing out on top 10 never mind top 3 even if it is a Mountain day. Craddock joins the early break. Good news he is capable of doing well in a Mountain break. He is also going for KOM points.
Despite Craddock being out in front Dan Martin attacks!
The front group is down to 3 including Craddock and now Dan Martin joins them! They seem set to win the stage. They just make it and what’s more Craddock takes the stage with Dan Martin 3rd!
A good result salvaged after a terrible day 4.
Martin gets back up to 6th in GC and Craddock takes KOM.
Tour of Southland: 
Ricki Nelson’s first big test here but as it’s a C1 race we have limited expectations.
Day 1 saw a decent sprint into 9th place.
Day 2 was one for the punchers. Our best puncher Nathan Haas killed himself trying to join the break and ended up almost dead last. Dan Martin was our best finisher but nowhere near the top hill guys.
Day 3. Our guys focussed on the break today which shows how little hope Nelson is being given. Teggart and McCarthy were in a group of 10 which was pulled back. Haas, however, got away on the BOTD and made up for yesterday’s antics by getting enough for the KOM.
Nelson was well positioned for the spring but fell back to 21st.
Day 4 is hilly and our only aim now really is to hold on to Polka Dots. Can Martin attacked early but too much flat meant he didn’t stay away. Haas then attacked to go for the KOM points but his break is also caught before that point.
The top punchers did their thing at the end. Haas loses the KOM but will wear the jersey on the last day as GC leader Borges is the rider who took the KOM.
Day 5, last day. Haas tries to go early for the KOM points but is pulled back. Eoin McCarthy makes break though eventually. He is powerless though to stop the other breakers from stealing the KOM points and jersey. A disappointing finish only slightly improved by a 5th place from Nelson in the mass sprint.
Overall, we take what we can from C1 races. New Zealand is a sponsor focus region but for the likes of Martin this was probably a waste of race days. Still Haas got some points and kept our interest up in the KOM battle and Nelson showed some decent sprinting ability.

March is easy to review. One race, one point!
Matthew Teggart finished 25th in Geraardsbergen -Bosberg.
He has outshine Corwin in all the cobbles races so far.
We are sure to fall in the end of March rankings because of so few races.

April look ahead.
A busy month for Glanbia and one where we hope to score good points albeit in the lower race classes.
First Dan Martin and crew will be in California  . Downey and Cruz will be targeting the prologue and Time Trial. The Queen Stage is day 2 and we’re hoping Dan Martin can have a big day to set him up for the week and a high GC finish. Craddock could be competitive too although I’d prefer if he went stage hunting.
Target: Stage Win and top 5
James Oram will lead the charge for early glory on the prologue of the Baltic  Chain Tour. After that Ricki Nelson will be asked to have his sprinting boots on. It’ sure to be a tough ask though. I am actually interested to see Cameron Meyer’s high prologue and sprint combination works here.
Target: Stage Win
At the Izola GP Nathan Haas will try his luck.
Target : Top 15
Then the cobbles of Lincoln, looks hilly too.,..
Target: Top 25
April ends with an important race for Glanbia, the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. Sam Bennett has done well here before (except for the prologue). He can’t make it this year so Ben King and Cameron Meyer will try to make an impact. Again, Meyer’s prologue stat will hopefully come into play. (Really not sure why I have neither of my 2 top sprinters here .... )

April Review:
Tour of California
Target: Stage Win and top 5
The first Time Trial is an exciting day for Glanbia. 3 of our boys in the top 10 the best being Lawson Craddock in 3rd place, he beats Downey who was 6th and Cruz 7th. We are after a stage here and this was probably out best shot. Still, good going. Note, the game is loving Craddock in Time Trials this year
Straight onto the only Mountain Stage. 2 or three teams really dominated here but Dan Martin comes in 9th meaning 11th overall. The gaps aren’t huge though. the only Mountain stage is too early to be decisive it seems.
Day 3, a puncher’s paradise and they delivered. Martin moves up to 9th and Craddock 13th.
Day 4, we‘ve no sprinters here. No change in GC.
5 , same as above. Would have liked to seen some of my time trailers go for the breaks but now it’s all about the GC and did I mention the sponsor’s Goal of a top10?
I do love a penultimate day Time Trial. Cruz, Downey and Craddock all in the top 4 of favourites here.
Disappointing then that our best is that man Craddock in 4th with Cruz in 6th. Craddock up to 11th in GC now while Martin does ok to hold onto 9th.
There is to be no final day parade into San Francisco, it’s a tough hilly day. Can Martin held onto the top 10, can Craddock crack the top 10?
At one point, Martin is dropped but he’s brought back just as Craddock attacks. Craddock ends up with the top group while Martin struggles again...
Craddock is on fire and sprints to 2nd place. Martin limps in but has done enough for tenth in GC. But it’s Craddock who will get the sponsor’s congrats as he ends up 8th and his consistent high places mean he wins Glanbia’s first ever Green Jersey.
The Texan delivers big in California.
Didn’t quite take the stage but a 2nd place and other high places while we locked down the Goal of top 10 with two riders achieving it. A good week.

Baltic Chain Tour
Our aim here was basically to snatch a good prologue with James Oram and then just hold on but the management of Glanbia misread the profile and missed the important element of cobblestones being present. The result was a disaster with the best man being Cameron Meyer in 24th.
The other 4 stages were just a matter of not embarrassing ourselves. Ricki Nelson got 10th on the final day. A real waste of days for Glanbia here.

Lincoln GP
A compulsory hilly cobbled race.
Dadley Corwin was somewhat generously mentioned in the preview as an outsider but in reality it was far too steep for him. Matthew Teggart continues to sneak some points for the team on the stones though taking 20th place.

Izola GP (Slovenia not Italy as per my preview)!
As always we are limited in these hilly classics and just hope Nathan Haas has a strong day,
This was not a strong day with Breakaway participant Sean Hahessy ending up our best finisher in 33rd.

USA Pro Challenge
Lawson Craddock delivers again with a 3rd place in the Prologue. It was uneventful after that with, as expected, a couple of sprinters overtaking him.
He slips to 5th in the final GC which is a good result. Cameron Meyer picks up some small points too

May preview:
Tour du Faso 
Target:
Top 20
A very specific race!
In our first season not a single Glanbia rider finished this race but William Connolly won a stage from a breakaway. Last year, our best finisher was 56th. So not great expectations!
We do this year have Dadley Corwin and Matthew Teggart. Corwin has struggled all this year but the stages here look flat at least so let’s see what he can do. Teggart should also be able to finish.
King and Meyer are here for any sprinting chances.
Olympia’s Tour 
Target:
Top 10
Time Trial Heaven! Nevertheless it is a C1 race so will be tough.
Craddock, Downey and Oram all here looking for a couple of good days against the clock to crack the top 10. I probably should have gone all in with my Team for the TT but hedged my bets a bit by bringing a couple of sprinters.
Craddock’s Time Trials have been consistently good this year so if that can continue he might be our best bet. We ended up with 3 riders in the last 20 last year so overall points haul will be the thing to watch here more than a single GC place/
Frankfurt Eschborn 
Target:
Top 10
Ricki Nelson will be our leader here but he’s going to need a lot of help to get through the hills. If he does hang on and we get a big bunch sprint he will be competitive at C2 level.....(I hope). If it is more selective we will see how Haas handles himself.

May Review
Tour du Faso
The great test of Glanbia’s Cobble “Team” of Dadley Corwin and Matthew Teggart!
Unlike most classics this was mainly flat which helped Corwin.
It starts poorly with both riders below out of the lead group on Day 1. It will be a tough task to grab that Top 20.
On Day 2 Corwin finishes at the very back of the peloton but no time lost.
The final savage day of cobbles....is , well, savage.
That seems to suit Corwin though and he puts in a solid race to finish 15th, Teggart is 27th.
That means 22nd overall for Corwin, just shy of our target. However, Teggart’s 5thin the U25 and 8th for Mark Downey at least add tiny points. From a cobbled racing point of view this is progress for Glanbia.
Frankfurt Eschborn
On paper, Ricki Nelson might be open of the best sprinters here but there’s a fair bit of climbing before we get to that point...14 climbs I’m told.
Nelson and most of the sprinters are left behind and a smaller peloton sprints for the win. In that group is Nathan Haas who has some decent all-round stats. He must have used them all perfectly as he sprinted to a very strong 4th place.
A surprising but very welcome boost for Glanbia to surpass our target here.
Olympia’s Tour
On the one hand lots of Time Trials, on the other, a C1 race.
We really needed one of our TT guys to break out of the pack and crack the top 10 for us on day ! Step forward Seán Downey, taking a great 3rd place.
A bit of a freak time gap for the sprinters on day 2 meant he drooped to 4th, Bennett missed that sprint but on Day 3 he popped up after a great lead-out by Downey and Cruz to take a 2nd place. Cruz finished 8th.
The crucial Team Time Trial followed. A very mid table 11th for Glanbia showing we’ve lost a little of speed on the flat TTTs this year but then it was a 75% Time Trial Team. Bennett had justified his place here though already. Downey drooped to 9th which we could live with.
Day 5 was another sprint chance for Bennett but he was nowhere to be seen
All down to the final epilogue. Downey’s mission was to hold on to that top 10.
Only 8.5km but enough to lose a few places, he dropped to 14th. This position along with Bennett’s podium and O’Loughlin taking some U25 points made this an acceptable race.

June Preview:
Tour of Vancouver
Target: Top 10
Our busy and important month begins in Vancouver.
This is a classic one-week Stage race which Glanbia prefer over the earlier season one day races. Tyler Brandt steps out of Dan Martin’s shadow here to lead. He has barely raced yet this year so let’s see what he can do!
There are two tough Mountain Stages that Brandt and definitely Craddock might suffer in so we’ll be relaying on our Time Trial Team to land a top 10. More or less our top TT team except for Bennett.
Rás Tailteann
Target Top 3 (Season goal)
The home race! In our first year, this was a C1 race and Glanbia flopped. Last year, it was C2 and we also flopped so the sponsors are looking for a top result this year.
Both Sam Bennett and Ricki Nelson as well as Cameron Meyer are here. Will too many cooks spoil the broth? We should be competitive but it is up to the Sprint Gods really.
Tour of South Africa
Target: Stage Win
Mainly here because it fits into our English-speaking world base.
We didn’t have much luck here last year and can’t expect too much this year. Our best bet is stage hunting with Craddock and Haas and a good TTT.
If the TTT goes really well maybe Craddock or Haas can get a top 20.
Giro del Trentino
Target: Top 3
A C2 race, two Mountain Stages and a TTT mean this should be a golden opportunity for Dan Martin.
The clash with South Africa does weaken our TT Team a lot though but we still hope we won’t lose anything significant to any team. Brandt was 9th last year so will be hoping for points from him too.
Monterrey TTT
Target: Top 3
Think this will be the first time we have the full strength Time Trial Team racing in anger so high expectations.
Last year, I felt the slightly hilly profile didn’t work for us. We’re hoping this year we have more rounded TTers. Over the season we’ve seen that we are probably 3rd best CT team in this discipline so Top 3 should be our minimum here.
We were 11th last year but that was C1.
Apex Mountain
Target: Top 15
Guess Dan Martin would have aced this a couple of years ago.....
Still, he’s our best shot with some decent support from Brandt , Craddock and McConvey
Any C1 points welcome but Top 15 would be good.

As an addemdum to May report Glanbia are glad to see our loaned out guys Alex Frame and Felix English complete the Vuelta. English was 4 and a half hours of the pace while Frame managed an amazing 7 and a half hour loss to win the lanterne rouge
It will stand to them as they return to Glanbia next year

We begin June in Vancouver where the last reliable Tyler Brandt secured a good 4th place overall.
He also bagged a podium place ion a stage as did Sam Bennett. In the TT both also helped secure a third place along with Richardson, Cruz, McCarthy, Craddock, O'Loughlin and S. Downey.
A good few days in one of our territories.

An Rás Tailiteann! The home race and season goal of a top 3.
I overloaded the team with sprinters and well it didn't work out.
Ricki Nelson saw the highest Stage finisher with a 4th place. It was a shambles , Nelson, Meyer, Bennett finished in the GC 11,13 and 15th which shows how confused the team were.
Fir the third year in a row we have failed the sponsors big time here,

The Monterrey TTT is a C2H2 challenge this year so Glanbia go in as one of the favorites. However like previous years we found the course slightly too uphill for our specialists,
5th place was below our target here.

Welcome to the Glanbia season wrap-up. I was very tempted to call it a post-mortem but that might be a bit harsh.
First of all, a huge thanks to all organisers reporters and everybody who made the season go so well. I probably don't say this enough but it was fun!
Thanks too for the comments on my very spotty Team HQ
In this first part we are looking at the Season Goals.

As you can see 3 out of 5 goals were met but this equated to only 6 out of 14 points. All in all we probably can't expect much change from the sponsors one way or another..
Both the Stage Win Goal and Top 10 were achieved uncomfortably close to the end of the season leaving the manager probably with a sense of relief more than anything else.
Sam Bennett contributed 2 sprint stage wins but this was a team effort with Dan Martin, Lawson Craddock and Freddy Cruz also grabbing one each. Cruz's Time Trial victory in the Tour of America was a highlight.
In California we left no room for error with both Craddock and Martin finishing in the top 10 (8th and 10th).
The Top 10 ranking was achieved with a huge October points haul mainly from the Herald Sun Tour which we didn't win but where we had 4 riders in the top 10 and the Vilnius TT where we finished 5th in a C1 challenge.
The Rás was definitely the low point. Too many sprinters maybe but we really messed up every stage. The sponsor have let it be known that continued failure to get even a Top 10 in the home race is unacceptable .

A bit unlucky with your goals. A great team effort in Herald Sun, unfortunately no outlier to get the win. And Ras was more of a lottery with the sprint AI. On to the next season!

The man: Dan Martin
Value: 4,88
At the top in both points and value terms is Dan Martin. Some maybe dismissed it as sentimental signing for an Irish team but Dan scored the highest individual points haul for any Glanbia rider yet, all for minimum wage.
Highlights:
An impressive Stage Win in the Trentino was a masterpiece in climbing but his 2nd overall in the early season in the Vuelta a Tachira was the high point for the team.
The Future:
Dan turns 75 in MG years next season....but who can rule out a final year as Road Captain/Talisman?

The man: Lawson Craddock
Value 2,66
I hyped up Craddock last year and he didn’t deliver. This year expectations were tempered but he emerged as a real leader scoring consistently and highly.
Highlights:
Most of his top performances were at the start of the year and it is the Tour of Cataluña that stands out. Here, he won a stage and Glanbia’s first King of the Mountains. A fifth in the USA Pro-Cycling Challenge was important for our sponsors as was his role in the Team Time Trials.
The Future:
Still at his peak, Craddock is probably going nowhere if terms can be agreed. Was this year blessed by luck or did quality final shine through?

The man : Ricki Nelson
Value: 2,15
Well this is awkward, this was supposed to be Sam Bennett’s place. Nelson featured in some smaller races which might have helped him. He was consistent but never quite landed a stage. If stages finished 500m earlier though he’d be the greatest sprinter of all time!
Highlights:
3rd place in the Betonxpress GP was a real morale and points boost for the team
The Future:
Not a young man and with weak (already) back up stats the future is unclear. On the other hand could being less of a favourite work to his advantage?

The man: Nathan Haas
Value: 1,67
A very important and unexpected contribution from Haas this year. He’s our designated puncheur but his real strength lies in races between hill and flat.
Highlights:
4th in Frankfurt Eschborn was good but it is his 3rd place after an attack in Uppsala that will be remembered. A race where we had no hopes turned into our second biggest points-per-day haul after Nelson brought the peloton home to take 4th place too.
The future:
Ideally, Haas could morph into a breakaway specialist, he has the talents but that might be far fetched.

Well put - a few sprinters could make this claim. It is a frustration I have with the game because it seems like they could fix sprinting easily by having them all start 200 meters later. Ricki would still need 300 meters but it would make most guys sprint trains better.

Part 2:
The man: Tyler Brandt
Value: 1,55
A solid year for Tyler when we consider that Dan Martin took the leader role in many races and he was sent to the Tour of America without any support. Pity he didn’t hit 100 points but still a reliable rider.
Highlights:
He placed a solid 4th in the Tour of Vancouver but exasperating as it was I have to acknowledge his Tour of America performance. He was on course for a solid top 20 but he insisted on attacking for Stages and KOM points. It didn’t work out but he kept going.
The Future:
Brandt is yet another rider on the way down unfortunately. Definitely still a role for him in ideal circumstances but we might have to sacrifice some lieutenants to get a captain..

The man: Freddy Cruz
Value 1,52
Freddy has already begun his descent but he still is among the best TTers in the CT. Give him a long, flat TT and he can still deliver.
Highlights:
After a frustrating 2 and a half weeks Freddy dominated the last Time Trial of the Tour of America. This safeguarded Glanbia’s record of always winning a stage in the ToA.
The Future:
With another decline coming Cruz’s term as leader might be ending but Glanbia still need depth for the Team Time Trial, is he good enough to help?

Having won some C1 stages last year there was great hope for Oram. In the end we got a solid teammate / 2nd rank leader.
Highlights:
He was a key member of the Team in Vilnius and Monterrey TTTs but I have to give his standout performance as that crazy lead out in the ToA that saw Glanbia take 2,3 and 4th in a stage having burnt off all competition except one!
The Future:
As a relatively young man James is probably to remain as a key part of Glanbia’s TT strategy.

The man: Seán Downey

I’d have to say Seán is probably a bit disappointed this year. This was the first year he didn’t win a stage all season. Nevertheless he “broke even” in value terms.
Highlights:
He was our best finisher in the Olympus Tour in 14th with a 3rd place in stage but as one of more all rounded TT specialist I am going to give him credit for our strong 5th place in the C1 Vilnius GP which bagged a lot of crucial points.
Future:
Again, old...but an Irish TT specialist is important for Glanbia.,..

The man: Sam Bennett
Value 1,06
The value ranking system is probably unfair on Sam. He was more used for stage races than classics. He won 2 stages and 4 more stage podiums.
Highlights:
A good sprint victory in Langkawi was a real fillip for the team; it had been a while since a win.
The Future:
Just peaking over that hill now...I can say that Glanbia will have bigger priorities than a new sprinter so maybe there is still space for what will still be good CT sprinter like Sammy

Well put - a few sprinters could make this claim. It is a frustration I have with the game because it seems like they could fix sprinting easily by having them all start 200 meters later. Ricki would still need 300 meters but it would make most guys sprint trains better.

Let's look at some of the domestiques quickly.
These are mainly riders facing the end of their careers, at least with Glanbia.
Ian Richardson actually had a good season capped by a strong 2nd place in the Irish TT NC. He was part of our TTT and finished 9th in the Herald Sun.
Cameron Meyer turned out to be a good draft pick scoring small sprint points here and there and contributing to TTT results.
Dadley Corwin was brought in to raid some points in cobbled races but proved of limited use unless the road was pan flat.
Ben King had to stay in the shadow of Bennett and Nelson all season. He'd still make a good fighter/break away artist...
Connor McConvey has been a stalwart for Glanbia but this season wasn't able to contribute much.
