----------
The race has changed names but it's still the one Oliveira managed to make the GC top 3 in last year. The names in our lineup should have allowed us to be in the mix at the very least.
Cerezo had the best start with a spot just outside the top 10 in the prologue. By then we had almost run out of luck already. Verona had to forget about any significant GC result when he crashed twice on stage two and every attempt of being part of the bunch sprints with Martínez failed.
Cortes got our hopes up again with a superb fourth place on the cobbled fourth stage. He attacked from a reduced bunch that failed to catch the break of the day from which good old Stannard grabbed the stage and the overall lead. Cortes didn't get his time gap and didn't go up higher than 21st overall.
Things took another turn for the worse when Cortes got involved in a mass crash with both the points and the overall leader the day after. Zurlo moved to GC 15th that day but to no surprise, he couldn't follow the best on the Ardennes stage that had a finish on La Redoute. Benoot pipped a very strong Trentin for the stage but both missed out on the overall win by mere seconds. Bahrain added the last stage to the tally to top it off.

Interesting startlist, doesn't look too strong. Maybe Chávarri can keep the podium streak going?

He could be in the top 3 in terms of climbing but the long time trials are going to cost him no matter what. Verona should be able to better against the clock but has a lower MO stat. I'd be very pleased already if we manage to get the top 5 sponsor goal this time. |

Vuelta a España (2.GT) Part [1/4]
Stage 1 | 7.2 km ITT The climb in the Granada prologue made the course more suited for punchers with a good TT than for the true specialists. Verona left the ramp early on and had to spent hours in the hot seat. Rein Taaramäe gave him the biggest scare by finishing in the same time but he couldn't deny Carlos his second win of the year and the red jersey. 1 | | Carlos Verona | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | 10'44" | 2 | | Rein Taaramäe | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. | 3 | | Muchaneta Williams | Astana - Premier Tech | + 2" | 4 | | Jack Haig | Team Jumbo-Visma | + 3" | 5 | | Matthias Brändle | Israel Start Up Nation | + 5" |
Stage 2 | 193.3 kms Iti s not unusual to have decisive climbs early on in La Vuelta and a French duo made good use of one in the second stage. Alaphilippe and Galtier, who have similar skillsets, kept a small gap on the descent. Eventually Galtier, winner of LBL and TDU in the past, sprinted to his maiden GT win and the overall lead. 1 | | Valérien Galtier | AG2R Citroën Team | 4h04'24" | 2 | | Julian Alaphilippe | Team Qhubeka NextHash | s.t. | 3 | | Matteo Trentin | Movistar Team | + 15" | 4 | | Kristian Aasvold | Team TotalEnergies | s.t. | 5 | | Andrew Fenn | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. |
Stage 3 | 160 kms Whilst Verona got to wear the green points jersey, the sprinters looked forward to their first true chance on day three. The final third was raced too fiercely for Martínez, who came home far behind the main sprinters. Stuyven beat an army of Aussies and Dutchies for his first ever Vuelta stage win. 1 | | Jasper Stuyven | CCC Team | 3h32'26" | 2 | | Caleb Ewan | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 3 | | Michael Matthews | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 4 | | Wouter Wippert | Team DSM | s.t. | 5 | | Moreno Hofland | EF Education - NIPPO | s.t. |
Stage 4 | 225.4 kms The Belgian champion definitely had the legs to add a second one the day after, during the longest and flattest stage so far. Sadly for him, the day ended with a sixth GT win of the season for Caleb Ewan. Martínez followed the wrong wheels but still managed to finish in 9th. 1 | | Caleb Ewan | BORA - hansgrohe | 4h50'00" | 2 | | Jasper Stuyven | CCC Team | s.t. | 3 | | Dylan Groenewegen | Team DSM | s.t. | 4 | | Fabio Jakobsen | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 5 | | Nacer Bouhanni | Team Qhubeka NextHash | s.t. | | | ---------- | | | 9 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 5 | 175.5 kms Several sprinters made it over the tough climb near Cuenca to be involved in the mass sprint. Stuyven missed out on a second stage win again, this time because of former Estonian champion Saharov triumphing from the break of the day. His consolation prize will be a day in red on the first mountain stage to Valdelinares. 1 | | Alo Saharov | Team TotalEnergies | 3h44'08" | 2 | | Jasper Stuyven | CCC Team | s.t. | 3 | | Nacer Bouhanni | Team Qhubeka NextHash | s.t. | 4 | | Michael Matthews | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 5 | | Jonas Bokeloh | Israel Start Up Nation | s.t. |
Vuelta a España 2021 GC after stage 5 1 | | Jasper Stuyven | CCC Team | 16h21'40" | 2 | | Valérien Galtier | AG2R Citroën Team | + 1" | 3 | | Caleb Ewan | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 4 | | Matthias Brändle | Israel Start Up Nation | + 4" | 5 | | Carlos Verona | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 7" | 6 | | Julian Alaphilippe | Team Qhubeka NextHash | + 8" | 7 | | Kristian Aasvold | Team TotalEnergies | + 10" | 8 | | Fabien Grellier | Groupama - FDJ | + 12" | 9 | | Rein Taaramäe | Trek - Segafredo | + 17" | 10 | | Muchaneta Williams | Astana - Premier Tech | + 19" |

Fine performance by Verona in the prologue, a stage win and a day in red will have made the sponsors very happy.

Very happy with how Verona started the race, though I had hoped he'd keep the jersey a little longer than he did. |

Vuelta a España (2.GT) Part [2/4]
Stage 6 | 209.7 kms The first mountain stage was a simple sobering experience. Eder had to let go pretty quickly and lost more than two minutes to the surprising winner. Sergey Chernetskiy thanked his teammate Williams for all his efforts in the best possible way and moved into the red jersey as well. 1 | | Sergey Chernetskiy | Astana - Premier Tech | 4h55'38" | 2 | | Juan Andrés Pardo | Movistar Team | + 6" | 3 | | Miguel Angel López | INEOS Grenadiers | + 26" | 4 | | Felix Großschartner | EF Education - NIPPO | + 37" | 5 | | Muchaneta Williams | Astana - Premier Tech | + 1'28" | | | ---------- | | | 15 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 2'52" |
Stage 7 | 212.3 kms Ednaldo Luiz Cortes tried gain something from the breakaway on the next day, but his group was caught inside the last five kilometers. Caleb Ewan sprinted to his second Vuelta (and seventh Grand Tour) stage of the year. 1 | | Caleb Ewan | BORA - hansgrohe | 4h44'05" | 2 | | Nacer Bouhanni | Team Qhubeka NextHash | s.t. | 3 | | Jasper Stuyven | CCC Team | s.t. | 4 | | Dylan Groenewegen | Team DSM | s.t. | 5 | | Moreno Hofland | EF Education - NIPPO | s.t. |
Stage 8 | 187.8 kms During the eight stage to Lloret de Mar, the pack acted as if they'd been partying 8 days straight there for a tad too long. Estonia's Alo Saharov only had have one pro win four days ago, now he is the winner of two Vuelta stages too. 1 | | Alo Saharov | Team TotalEnergies | 3h56'00" | 2 | | Alexander Krieger | Israel Start Up Nation | s.t. | 3 | | Shane Archbold | Deceuninck - Quick Step | s.t. | 4 | | Nicola Boem | Vini Zabù | s.t. | 5 | | Juan José Lobato | CCC Team | s.t. |
Stage 9 | 46.9 km ITT The hangover would only kick in after the long time trial on stage nine though. Malori had a superb day, putting more than a minute into the other specialists. Eder lost much time and dropped from 15th to 26th overall. 1 | | Adriano Malori | INEOS Grenadiers | 1h05'34" | 2 | | Yoann Paillot | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | + 1'17" | 3 | | Ryan Mullen | Movistar Team | + 1'31" | 4 | | Cameron Meyer | Team BikeExchange | + 1'51" | 5 | | Michael Matthews | Lotto Soudal | + 2'04" | | | ---------- | | | 104 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 5'56" |
Stage 10 | 197.6 kms A ridiculous 10-day stint before the first rest day ended with a second mountain stage, now one to Ordino Arcalis. The red jersey suffered today but he lost just 50 seconds thanks to a strong helper in Williams. Miguel Ángel López started chipping away at his deficit with the stage win, his second victory of the year. 1 | | Miguel Angel López | INEOS Grenadiers | 5h04'15" | 2 | | Valérien Galtier | AG2R Citroën Team | + 24" | 3 | | Robert Kiserlovski | INEOS Grenadiers | + 39" | 4 | | Sergey Chernetskiy | Astana Qazaqstan Team | + 51" | 5 | | Muchaneta Williams | Astana Qazaqstan Team | + 1'07" | | | ---------- | | | 8 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 1'24" |
Vuelta a España 2021 GC after stage 10 1 | | Sergey Chernetskiy | Astana Qazaqstan Team | 36h11'16" | 2 | | Miguel Angel López | INEOS Grenadiers | + 1'18" | 3 | | Valérien Galtier | AG2R Citroën Team | + 1'35" | 4 | | Muchaneta Williams | Astana Qazaqstan Team | + 2'16" | 5 | | Tim Wellens | Lotto Soudal | + 3'21" | 6 | | Juan Andrés Pardo | Movistar Team | + 3'46" | 7 | | Dylan van Baarle | Team Jumbo-Visma | + 3'58" | 8 | | Felix Großschartner | EF Education - NIPPO | + 4'08" | 9 | | Tony Gallopin | BORA - hansgrohe | + 4'57" | 10 | | Cameron Meyer | Team BikeExchange | + 4'59" | | | ---------- | | | 17 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 6'46" |

Somewhat disappointing so far. The great Spanish hope Pardo is lagging behind and so is Chavarri. May the rest day change your fortunes!

Somewhat disappointing so far. The great Spanish hope Pardo is lagging behind and so is Chavarri. May the rest day change your fortunes!
Pretty underwhelming so far indeed, even if the World Championships and Lombardia were Eder's main goals to begin with. Hope his form will keep on improving and he should to if he still wants a top 10 with another long time trial coming up.
Spain should definitely be looking Pardo's way if they still want a domestic winner. Had expected him to sit closer to López at this point though |

Vuelta a España (2.GT) Part [3/4]
Stage 11 | 209.7 kms Astana and INEOS shared the workload and allowed the breakaway to fight for the stage. Taaramäe secured an impressive third (!) stage win for Estonia. Eder accelerated from the foot of the last climb with Amilton Serrano's support and eventually only lost time to Pardo and López, who took red. Eder became ninth. 1 | | Rein Taaramäe | Trek - Segafredo | 4h59'20" | 2 | | Stefano Nardelli | EF Education - NIPPO | + 1'05" | 3 | | Valentin Baillifard | Israel Start Up Nation | + 1'14" | 4 | | Frederico Figueiredo | CCC Team | + 1'50" | 5 | | David Niquet | Groupama - FDJ | + 2'55" | | | ---------- | | | 8 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 3'37" |
Stage 12 | 146 kms We definitely should have had a man in the breakaway on the follow-up of a mountain stage but we did not. Verona's attack when things slowed down came too late to catch stage the eventual stage winner Manfredi. 1 | | Andrea Manfredi | Bahrain Victorious | 3h10'27" | 2 | | Carlos Verona | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 43" | 3 | | Thomas Boudat | Groupama - FDJ | s.t. | 4 | | Michael Matthews | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 5 | | Caleb Ewan | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. |
Stage 13 | 189.9 kms The next stage finished at the short climb to La Bien Aparecida sanctuary. Sergey Chernetskiy won his second stage as Eder was the happiest man in the peloton clinging to the very back of the reduced GC contenders group. 1 | | Sergey Chernetskiy | Astana Qazaqstan Team | 4h12'23" | 2 | | Miguel Angel López | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | 3 | | Julian Alaphilippe | Team Qhubeka NextHash | s.t. | 4 | | Tony Gallopin | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 5 | | Sindre Lunke | Team TotalEnergies | s.t. | | | ---------- | | | 15 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 14 | 169.3 kms Eder won the Lagos de Covadonga stage from a breakaway in 2019, but could not find those legs today. Kiserlovski, López and Pardo went clear early on the climb and just kept gaining time, with the red jersey coming out on top. Eder dropped from 9th to 10th gaining time on the wrong riders. 1 | | Miguel Angel López | INEOS Grenadiers | 4h33'05" | 2 | | Juan Andrés Pardo | Movistar Team | + 17" | 3 | | Robert Kiserlovski | INEOS Grenadiers | + 26" | 4 | | Valérien Galtier | AG2R Citroën Team | + 2'20" | 5 | | Damian Calabria | UAE-Team Emirates | + 2'33" | | | ---------- | | | 11 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 3'30" |
Stage 15 | 179.8 kms His 2019 Covadonga legs did shop up on the 2022 Pajares stage though, even if they didn't keep López from being in total control again. While he outsprinted Chernetskiy for a third stage win, Chávarri moved from 10th to 6th overall. 1 | | Miguel Angel López | INEOS Grenadiers | 4h39'35" | 2 | | Sergey Chernetskiy | Astana Qazaqstan Team | + 6" | 3 | | Julian Alaphilippe | Team Qhubeka NextHash | + 27" | 4 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 59" | 5 | | Juan Andrés Pardo | Movistar Team | + 1'33" |
Stage 16 | 167.4 kms Manuel Martínez joined the breakaway after being nowhere in any of the sprint stages, but his group was caught in the streets of Valladolid. Matthews won the stage after the pace had shattered the bunch. Eder (group 3) lost time but he is still going to tackle La Vuelta's last week starting from GC 6th. 1 | | Michael Matthews | Lotto Soudal | 3h22'29" | 2 | | Caleb Ewan | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 3 | | Jasper Stuyven | CCC Team | s.t. | 4 | | Julian Alaphilippe | Team Qhubeka NextHash | s.t. | 5 | | Sam Bennett | Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team | s.t. |
Vuelta a España 2021 GC after stage 16 1 | | Miguel Angel López | INEOS Grenadiers | 61h14'10" | 2 | | Sergey Chernetskiy | Astana Qazaqstan Team | + 3'35" | 3 | | Juan Andrés Pardo | Movistar Team | + 5'01" | 4 | | Valérien Galtier | AG2R Citroën Team | + 6'31" | 5 | | Julian Alaphilippe | Team Qhubeka NextHash | + 8'36" | 6 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 11'16" | 7 | | Muchaneta Williams | Astana Qazaqstan Team | + 13'32" | 8 | | Dylan van Baarle | Team Jumbo-Visma | + 13'45" | 9 | | Tim Wellens | Lotto Soudal | + 14'07" | 10 | | Lilian Calmejane | Groupama - FDJ | + 14'51" |

Vuelta a España (2.GT) Part [4/4]
Stage 17 | 156.5 kms Everything went according to plan when Chávarri made it over the cat.1 Puerto de Navacerrada and then, the descent... Eder crashed along with Alaphilippe and Pardo, among others, and ended up losing the time he had not expected to lose until the upcoming time trial. Somehow he only lost one spot in the GC. 1 | | Omar Fraile | Bahrain Victorious | 3h49'49" | 2 | | Tom Slagter | Team Qhubeka NextHash | + 1'13" | 3 | | David Niquet | Groupama - FDJ | + 1'54" | 4 | | Rein Taaramäe | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. | 5 | | Miguel Angel López | INEOS Grenadiers | + 2'22" | | | ---------- | | | 40 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 5'44" |
Stage 18 | 178.1 kms Whilst feeling a little sore, Eder didn't have the worst legs the day after. It was the peloton that gave Teuns and Hirt a free pass to gain minutes. Chávarri lost contact with his group near the finish and dropped from 7th to 9th overall. 1 | | Dylan Teuns | Lotto Soudal | 4h10'02" | 2 | | Bernardo Suaza | Movistar Team | + 58" | 3 | | Natnael Berhane | Team TotalEnergies | + 2'28" | 4 | | Jan Hirt | Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team | + 4'40" | 5 | | Tsgabu Grmay | Team BikeExchange | + 4'54" | 6 | | Timothy Roe | EF Education - NIPPO | + 4'59" | 7 | | Juan Andrés Pardo | Movistar Team | + 7'06" | | | ---------- | | | 40 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 7'30" |
Stage 19 | 140.2 kms Ednaldo Luiz Cortes, former Brazilian champion and fourth in this season's E3 Classic, joined a breakaway that fought for the stage in the city of Alcobendas. Launching his sprint a little late, he could not get past Petilli and Ben Swift and missed out on a perfect goodbye victory before he's off to Bahrain Victorious. 1 | | Simone Petilli | Vini Zabù | 3h11'44" | 2 | | Ben Swift | Team BikeExchange | s.t. | 3 | | Ednaldo Luiz Cortes | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | | Kristian Aasvold | Team TotalEnergies | s.t. | 5 | | William Barta | Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team | s.t. |
Stage 20 | 40.1 km ITT Despite losing loads of time again, Eder did not ride his worst time trial, losing just a place overall. Ryan Mullen won and GC wise Williams made a remarkable leap from 12th to 6th after coming fourth on the day. 1 | | Ryan Mullen | Movistar Team | 51'45" | 2 | | Yoann Paillot | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | + 6" | 3 | | Jérôme Coppel | AG2R Citroën Team | + 28" | 4 | | Muchaneta Williams | Astana Qazaqstan Team | + 30" | 5 | | Miles Scotson | Team BikeExchange | + 52" | | | ---------- | | | 107 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 4'36" |
Stage 21 | 100.5 kms The stage to Madrid ended up being our best day on the flat. The jury somehow gave the stage win to escapee Miles Scotson and Martínez sprinted to a third place. But before that, the high pace tore the pack apart and caught some GC riders off guard. The 57" gap made Chávarri move from 10th to 9th in the final overall standings. 1 | | Miles Scotson | Team BikeExchange | 2h02'37" | 2 | | Wouter Wippert | Team DSM | s.t. | 3 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | | Tom Van Asbroeck | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 5 | | Michael Matthews | Lotto Soudal | s.t. |
Vuelta a España 2021 Final overall standings 1 | | Miguel Angel López | INEOS Grenadiers | 75h34'07" | 2 | | Sergey Chernetskiy | Astana Qazaqstan Team | + 2'42" | 3 | | Valérien Galtier | AG2R Citroën Team | + 7'38" | 4 | | Juan Andrés Pardo | Movistar Team | + 10'14" | 5 | | Julian Alaphilippe | Team Qhubeka NextHash | + 12'40" | 6 | | Muchaneta Williams | Astana Qazaqstan Team | + 13'43" | 7 | | Tim Wellens | Lotto Soudal | + 14'46" | 8 | | Dylan van Baarle | Team Jumbo-Visma | + 14'53" | 9 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 15'58" | 10 | | Dylan Teuns | Lotto Soudal | + 16'25" |
Vuelta a España 2021 Jersey winners Overall | Miguel Angel López | INEOS Grenadiers | Points | Miguel Angel López | INEOS Grenadiers | Mountain | Damian Calabria | UAE-Team Emirates | Young | Valérien Galtier | AG2R Citroën Team | | | | Best team: | Astana Qazaqstan Team | |
Not the GC top 5 the sponsors had it mind, but Chávarri would have come very close if not for his unfortunate crash on stage 17, despite the high number of TT kilometers. We won a stage with Verona and had three other podium finishes.
Galtier and Calabria are well-deserved jersey winners, seeing how they have kept their jerseys since day two and day six respectively. Miguel Angel López' comfortably won his first Grand Tour and probably hadn't expected to have Chernetskiy on the podium with him. The unexpected Russian winner of this year's Paris-Nice continues to perform at a very high level. |

Just as well that Verona won the first stage. 9th is a pretty poor result, though the top 5 isn't that far away and if it hadn't been for that crash on stage 17... well, it involved Alaphilippe as well, so maybe it wouldn't have been a top 5 even then.

In hindsight, Verona's stage win was an early high indeed. The sprint stages were all disappointing except for the last one and the crash destroyed all chances of that expected top 5. Tough to see Chávarri's improving legs unrewarded in the end. |

WT classics away from La Vuelta
219.5 kms | EuroEyes Cyclassics Hamburg | C. Barbero | | J.L. Campos | | L. Doncel | | P. Furer | | E. Larra | | N. Padilla | | V. Pinheiral | | |
Barbero finished on the podium last year and perfectly knew whose wheel to take in Germany's second biggest city. Fernando Gaviria did win the latest two editions of this race after all.
He wouldn't even come close to matching the Colombian's sprint today though. Gaviria added a clear third win to his tally by finishing relatively far ahead of Guyot and Pelucchi.
EuroEyes Cyclassics 2021 Race results 1 | | Fernando Gaviria | Team DSM | 4h57'27" | 2 | | Romain Guyot | Groupama - FDJ | s.t. | 3 | | Matteo Pelucchi | Astana - Premier Tech | s.t. | 4 | | Marco König | Bahrain Victorious | s.t. | 5 | | Mike Teunissen | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 6 | | Carlos Barbero | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 7 | | Nikias Arndt | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 8 | | Marcel Franz | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. | 9 | | Yves Lampaert | Deceuninck - Quick Step | s.t. | 10 | | Alberto Bettiol | UAE-Team Emirates | s.t. |

236 kms | Bretagne Classic - Ouest-France | L. Doncel | | P. Furer | | E. Larra | | N. Padilla | | V. Pinheiral | | D. Ochoa | | G. Vilda | |
The stacked field with an interesting mix of strong sprinters, punchers and true climbers did not make for an exciting race, to put things mildly. The bunch had to give its all to reel in the breakaway on the final lap.
Whereas we had hoped Ochoa could make a move on the ultimate climb, only Lotto's Krigbaum opened up a gap on it. His move and the peloton's chase fell short against Groupama's Kustadinchev's effort. It got the Russian his first pro win and his team some vital WT points.
Bretagne Classic - Ouest-France 2021 Race results 1 | | Roman Kustadinchev | Groupama - FDJ | 5h26'53" | 2 | | Matteo Pelucchi | Astana Qazaqstan Team | s.t. | 3 | | Peter Sagan | Bahrain Victorious | s.t. | 4 | | Mathias Krigbaum | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 5 | | Marc Sarreau | B&B Hotels p/b KTM | s.t. | 6 | | Simon Yates | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | 7 | | Nick Van Der Lijke | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 8 | | Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier | B&B Hotels p/b KTM | s.t. | 9 | | Niki Terpstra | Team DSM | s.t. | 10 | | Alberto Bettiol | UAE-Team Emirates | s.t. | | | ---------- | | | 13 | | Diego Ochoa | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |

206.7 kms | Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec | P. Bilbao | | P. Furer | | A. Mendigain | | J. Noria | | N. Padilla | | F. Palmero | | E. Zardini | |
The first of the Canadian classics brought us to Québec, where Ion Izagirre managed to win for us back in 2018. It wasn't an exciting race then, and it wasn't this time either. The pack just got thinned with each lap.
That was until Qhubeka's top favouriter Dieter Walker kicked away on the first of two climbs inside the final lap. Bahrain's Kenyeres couldn't bridge the gap but still held on for second. Bilbao just made the top 10 for us.
Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec 2021 Race results 1 | | Dieter Walker | Team Qhubeka NextHash | 5h24'37" | 2 | | Abel Kenyeres | Bahrain Victorious | + 45" | 3 | | Nairo Quintana | Bahrain Victorious | s.t. | 4 | | Moreno Moser | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | 5 | | Graeme Hammond | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | 6 | | Dries Van Gestel | Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team | s.t. | 7 | | Edward Theuns | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 8 | | Rubén Fernández | Team Qhubeka NextHash | s.t. | 9 | | Victor Lafay | Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team | s.t. | 10 | | Pello Bilbao | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |

205.8 kms | Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal | C. Barbero | | F. Colla | | P. Furer | | A. Mendigain | | J. Noria | | N. Padilla | | E. Zardini | |
In Montréal we were looking to do better than Intxausti's fourth place in 2019.
The Qhubeka rider to attack in last lap here was Rubén Fernández, but he ended up in a group of the strong men with our Paul Furer, who had one of the best days of his year.
Behind that group, Barbero had made the cut in the bunch, ready to launch his sprint in case the leaders would slow down.
They did start to look at one another and Furer launched the sprint first. So did Barbero, just in case Paul was about to get pipped. Turned out to be the right choice as Carlos snatched the biggest classic win of his career with Furer coming in third and Dan Martin finishing in between.
Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal 2021 Race results 1 | | Carlos Barbero | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | 5h29'11" | 2 | | Daniel Martin | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 3 | | Paul Furer | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | | Rubén Fernández | Team Qhubeka NextHash | s.t. | 5 | | Carlos Betancur | Movistar Team | s.t. | 6 | | Loïc Vliegen | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 7 | | Wilco Kelderman | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 8 | | Graeme Hammond | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | 9 | | Axel Carles | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | 10 | | Daniele Ratto | Israel - Premier Tech | s.t. |

Thank you, an unexpected win for sure. Good thing feeling guilty didn't keep me from sprinting behind Furer with Barbero. |
