The race has changed names but it's still the one Oliveira managed to make the GC top 3 in last year. The names in our lineup should have allowed us to be in the mix at the very least.
Cerezo had the best start with a spot just outside the top 10 in the prologue. By then we had almost run out of luck already. Verona had to forget about any significant GC result when he crashed twice on stage two and every attempt of being part of the bunch sprints with Martínez failed.
Cortes got our hopes up again with a superb fourth place on the cobbled fourth stage. He attacked from a reduced bunch that failed to catch the break of the day from which good old Stannard grabbed the stage and the overall lead. Cortes didn't get his time gap and didn't go up higher than 21st overall.
Things took another turn for the worse when Cortes got involved in a mass crash with both the points and the overall leader the day after. Zurlo moved to GC 15th that day but to no surprise, he couldn't follow the best on the Ardennes stage that had a finish on La Redoute. Benoot pipped a very strong Trentin for the stage but both missed out on the overall win by mere seconds. Bahrain added the last stage to the tally to top it off.

He could be in the top 3 in terms of climbing but the long time trials are going to cost him no matter what. Verona should be able to better against the clock but has a lower MO stat. I'd be very pleased already if we manage to get the top 5 sponsor goal this time. |

Pretty underwhelming so far indeed, even if the World Championships and Lombardia were Eder's main goals to begin with. Hope his form will keep on improving and he should to if he still wants a top 10 with another long time trial coming up.
Spain should definitely be looking Pardo's way if they still want a domestic winner. Had expected him to sit closer to López at this point though  |

Not the GC top 5 the sponsors had it mind, but Chávarri would have come very close if not for his unfortunate crash on stage 17, despite the high number of TT kilometers. We won a stage with Verona and had three other podium finishes.
Galtier and Calabria are well-deserved jersey winners, seeing how they have kept their jerseys since day two and day six respectively. Miguel Angel López' comfortably won his first Grand Tour and probably hadn't expected to have Chernetskiy on the podium with him. The unexpected Russian winner of this year's Paris-Nice continues to perform at a very high level. |

Just as well that Verona won the first stage. 9th is a pretty poor result, though the top 5 isn't that far away and if it hadn't been for that crash on stage 17... well, it involved Alaphilippe as well, so maybe it wouldn't have been a top 5 even then.

In hindsight, Verona's stage win was an early high indeed. The sprint stages were all disappointing except for the last one and the crash destroyed all chances of that expected top 5. Tough to see Chávarri's improving legs unrewarded in the end. |

WT classics away from La Vuelta

Barbero finished on the podium last year and perfectly knew whose wheel to take in Germany's second biggest city. Fernando Gaviria did win the latest two editions of this race after all.
He wouldn't even come close to matching the Colombian's sprint today though. Gaviria added a clear third win to his tally by finishing relatively far ahead of Guyot and Pelucchi.

The stacked field with an interesting mix of strong sprinters, punchers and true climbers did not make for an exciting race, to put things mildly. The bunch had to give its all to reel in the breakaway on the final lap.
Whereas we had hoped Ochoa could make a move on the ultimate climb, only Lotto's Krigbaum opened up a gap on it. His move and the peloton's chase fell short against Groupama's Kustadinchev's effort. It got the Russian his first pro win and his team some vital WT points.

The first of the Canadian classics brought us to Québec, where Ion Izagirre managed to win for us back in 2018. It wasn't an exciting race then, and it wasn't this time either. The pack just got thinned with each lap.
That was until Qhubeka's top favouriter Dieter Walker kicked away on the first of two climbs inside the final lap. Bahrain's Kenyeres couldn't bridge the gap but still held on for second. Bilbao just made the top 10 for us.

In Montréal we were looking to do better than Intxausti's fourth place in 2019.
The Qhubeka rider to attack in last lap here was Rubén Fernández, but he ended up in a group of the strong men with our Paul Furer, who had one of the best days of his year.
Behind that group, Barbero had made the cut in the bunch, ready to launch his sprint in case the leaders would slow down.
They did start to look at one another and Furer launched the sprint first. So did Barbero, just in case Paul was about to get pipped. Turned out to be the right choice as Carlos snatched the biggest classic win of his career with Furer coming in third and Dan Martin finishing in between.
