We didn't get off to the best start when only Fabio Aru and Ruben lost over a minute to the other GC contenders on the first stage. Coquard sprinted to a clear win and the first yellow jersey, but it didn't bring him much luck on day two.

Coquard crashed in the descent of the final climb after Mendigain had failed to claim the polka dot jersey. The pace slowed and most that were involved in the crash managed to come back. Still Noria challenged for the stage win but he saw Ewan beat him with a late bike throw.

The team wanted to set something straight on the final stage in Corsica. Henao ripped the pack apart and a group of eleven rode towards the line. Ewan came close to denying us once more yet this time Guerreiro held on to claim the win for us.

While Ruben bounced back after a bad first day, riders like Kelderman, Nairo Quintana Pinot, Alaphilippe, Simon Yates had a perfect first three days. Bahrain though saw Mühlberger abandon whilst domestiques Kenyeres, Dumoulin crashed too and co-leader Adam Yates lost more than 7 mins.

We didn't really look forward to the team time trial but our guys did superb with a stunning fourth place. After that Caleb Ewan rode three superb sprints over the next couple of days but Krigbaum kept it at two wins by winning stage 6 from the breakaway.

Wout Poels had one of his very best days on the bike and succesfully attacked on the .HC Port de Pailhères climb. Everyone bar Quintana lost at leat 3 minutes while Ruben lost five.

The latter tried to make up for that on the next day, caused the yellow jersey to get dropped, then crashed and was delighted to make it back to the front group alongside Wout Poels. Ewan's fourth(!) stage win topped off a 10-day stint on the bike.

The Mont Saint-Michel time trial offered a first chance for Ruben to chip away at his deficit and so he did, only riding slower than Kelderman. He also learned from his Grand Départ mistakes and survived the crosswinds on stage 12 which made him move into seventh overall.

Bryan Coquard benefited from Ewan being boxed in on day 11 to win his first TdF stage this year and used this momentum to beat him fair and square the day after. He also grabbed more points for the green jersey on the bumpy finish in Lyon on stage 14 but his gap to Ewan in the points standings remains significant.

Deceuninck worked hard to catch the breakaway ahead of Mont Ventoux on the last stage before the rest day, and their leader showed his strength by dropping everyone long way ahead of the lunar landscape. While Pinot snatched the yellow jersey, Ruben lost a lot of time to the winner but rode a steady climb to come home in fifth. This way he could match his best ever result (5th) here one week from now.

Just to prove that I follow closely: It's suspicious that the time gaps in the GC after stage 15 are the same as the gaps on stage 15 itself. Smile

In any case, 5th would be a very good result considering the competition. It'd be good if Ruben can gain time in the last TT because it's followed by some really tough stages.

Probably couldn't really cope with the real time deficit then and didn't count on anyone watching so closely Cool. I was not unhappy with 5th back then either with a stage win in the bag already and thinking how he finished in second at the Giro too.

BORA was succesful again on the hilly stage to Gap. Ewan didn't make the cut but Gallopin took his role as the former world champion beat Benoot, the current one, for stage 16.

Ruben rode a very good time trial but went just a little too fast on the second climb, causing him to lose a lot of his advantage on the descent. He did finish faster than his rivals, apart from Kelderman. Luckily Henao had delivered the time time trial of his career earlier on to claim the victory.

Ravasi pullled one over on two Frenchmen to win the double Alpe d'Huez stage but the crowd wasn't too upset when they saw Pinot defend his yellow jersey against Kelderman.

Turned out heartbreak would happen the day after when Kelderman kicked away on the seemingly easier cat.1 Col de la Croix Fry. Kelderman took enough time to put Pinot back into second, 8 seconds down.

Pinot had one chance left to take the jersey back on the stage to Semnoz. He was off to a rough start with an early crash. On the final climb, Ruben finished the race on a high as he was the best of the GC contenders. Pinot's final sprint only made him finish in the same time as Kelderman.

The disappointed Parisians saw Ewan conclude with another dominant sprint win, this time ahead of Vallée and Merlier.

Tour de France 2021 :: Race recap

i.imgur.com/UhUSUrB.png Final overall standings

The French will have to wait at least one more year to have a compatriot on the highest step of the podium in Paris. A strong raid from Kelderman on day 19 eventually kept Pinot from achieving what the entire nation has been longing for.

Ruben concludes his second consecutive Grand Tour in 4th place, which is our and his best ever result here. The stage he won in Corsica does make up for being just outside the final podium.

Heartbreak for the French hopes! Really good performance by Ruben, plus two stage wins for the team. TdF podium next year then. Smile

Second and fourth in consecutive GTs should be an outcome he's content with indeed.

Two modest lineups were sent to a duo of Basque 1.1 races. First Movistar kept everything together on the last climb in Ordizia, which resulted in a dominant sprint win for their sprinter Ballerini. Puncher talent Doncel came 15th for us.

A week later, a strong Movistar lineup carried the race again in Getxo. After a great leadout our man Bilbao saw only Chaves sprint faster.

With Guerreiro enjoying some rest after racing two Grand Tours and Chávarri only just coming back into action, the teams was looking at either Bilbao or Herrada to land a solid result.

Herrada did go over the final - Bordako Tontorra - climb clear from the bunch yet behind the strongest riders of the day. He would claim an honourable 7th place on the day.

Adam Yates, unable to achieve a good GC result in Le Tour because of several crashes, was alone atop the ultimate climb. Kelderman was happy to see Alaphilippe bridge the gap as he could eventually jump from the latter's wheel to make San Sebastián his biggest ever one-day win.

We sent a similarly modest lineup to Londo for the first World Tour edition of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic. Our fastest man couldn't keep up after the last passage on Boxing Hill as the bunch got torn apart. Belgian champion Stuyven finished off a superb team effort by winning ahead of green jersey winner Caleb Ewan.

All we were interested in on the flat stages was keeping team captain Izagirre out of trouble as we didn't have a true sprinter in our lineup. While the team fulfilled this task, they saw Fabio Jakobsen overcome his demons with two stage wins from four sprints and maiden WT stage wins for Marco König and Croatian champion Bruno Maltar.

Simon Yates powerfully kicked away outside the final kilometer on stage five and came second only behind Power on the last hilly stage to secure a comfortable overall win. Ion's first 11th place got him up into GC 9th, a second time was enough to conclude in 6th overall [new team record, FYI]. Jakobsen won a third time in Krakow despite a strong breakaway from Mendigain and snatched the points jersey too.

---
The slightly uphill sprints were not hard enough for the true sprinters this years, especially De Buyst did great with three top 3 results in four tries. We were only in the mix on day two (4th for Bilbao) and day three (attack from Sagasta on the last climb that didn't stick).

Chávarri proved to have overcome a slumbering illness with a solid performance on the Lagunas de Neila mountain stage. Him and Dayer couldn't react to Suaza's late attack though. Both came home in the second group and concluded the race in the overall top 10 [top 5 sponsor goal achieved, FYI].
