Pro Hallstatt Classic Preview
The fourth edition of the Pro Hallstatt classic brings many of the best climbers and hybrids from the Pro Tour and Pro Continental divisions in an attempt to win this race. Two time winner Spilak is also on the startlist to try to make it three wins out of four. However, defending champion Sicard is not here to defend his crown.
The course remains the same, with a moderate difficulty hill followed by a circuit consisting of a climb which will be tackled five times. This is followed by a short, steep climb to the finish, which will be a real test of the riders after what is expected to be hard race. Let's take a look at the top contenders in the following section.
| MON | HIL | RES | ACC | Herklotz | 84 | 81 | 80 | 76 | Lecuisinier | 85 | 75 | 80 | 74 | Dombrowski | 84 | 75 | 78 | 75 | Madrazo | 84 | 75 | 79 | 71 | Tenorio | 84 | 76 | 76 | 67 | Wellens | 82 | 75 | 80 | 68 | Padun | 81 | 77 | 74 | 75 | Spilak | 81 | 78 | 75 | 68 | Hirt | 81 | 74 | 79 | 76 | Quintana | 82 | 74 | 76 | 66 | Cattaneo | 82 | 70 | 80 | 70 |
Herklotz is the top contender to win this race, with his amazing skillset of climbing and punchiness, and great support stats to boot. He is the only rider to have 80+ in both the main stats required for this race!
Lecuisinier and Dombrowski should be the closest competitors to the Puma leading man, with both riders extremely strong climbers in their own right. Lecuisinier perhaps holds a slight edge though.
Madrazo and to a slightly lesser extent, Tenorio, are the other contenders for a podium place, and perhaps the stage win on a good day.
Wellens, Padun and two time winner Spilak are the next in line on the contenders' list and the top climbers from the PCT in this race.
Quintana and Cattaneo are the others in the list who should be fighting for top Top 10 places. Hirt is a slightly weaker climber than the two mentioned but probably a stronger rider overall.
| MON | HIL | RES | ACC | Preidler | 80 | 78 | 77 | 69 | Formolo | 79 | 80 | 76 | 71 | Berhane | 81 | 75 | 74 | 68 | Galta | 81 | 73 | 79 | 66 | Kwiatkowski | 78 | 81 | 76 | 75 | Novak | 79 | 77 | 76 | 76 | Arndt | 79 | 76 | 76 | 75 | Shikai | 81 | 71 | 76 | 66 | Bongiorno | 79 | 75 | 77 | 69 | Keizer | 80 | 70 | 78 | 72 | Slagter | 78 | 79 | 73 | 71 |
The most interesting names in the outsiders' list are probably the Aker duo of Galta and Kwiatkowski. It will be very interesting to see how they sort out their tactics and whether one rider among them will be given the leadership, or both will be allowed to express themselves.
Berhane, Novak, Arndt, Shikai, Bongiorno, Keizer and Slagter are the other team leaders in this list, but they look likely to be Top 10 contenders at best. But we can never write them off either.
Preidler and Formolo are two very strong riders on this list, but they will probably be working for their respective leaders, Tenorio and Madrazo, rather than for their own benefit. Nonetheless, they should still be around the top dozen places or so.

How many minutes is Herklotz going to win by?

Everyone called him the favorite in the last edition already, and he ended up really messing up the finale to only finish 7th in his worst race of the season, so this is actually the race I'm worried about the most.
And for that reason, it's also the only Herklotz race this year that isn't a win goal.
Still, I'm obviously rather hopeful that the extra training and a more careful approach of the last hill (specifically, either don't let anyone attack away beforehand or let others do the work leading into it and reel them in in the final km) can see us finally win this quasi-home race in our third attempt.
The most dangerous puncheurs Preidler, Kwiatek and Formolo (thank god for no MAL) are hopefully caught up in team orders or too weak on the climbs, and no pure climber should have the punch to distance Herklotz if everyone relevant enters the last hill with enough energy to distribute evenly across it.
The lineup is very similar again, with only our new signing Zwiehoff replacing Egger from the Tirreno squad. That means it's again 6 Germans in our 8 rider lineup!
They do need to do better here though and try to be at the front in numbers to avoid splits and keep early attacks in check.
(I assume this race is too close to T-A to have fixed the world champion jersey issue already?)

No Oomen yet, so hoping Novak and De Plus can combine for a few minor points.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

We're aiming for a top 5 and some nice depth scoring. We really need a proper amount of points here.

Poljanski's perfect MO-HL balance makes him a good leader for this race...
...though I doubt it would bring him far.

Decided to go with both Galta and Kwiatkowski here, as Galta has never shown in the PT that he can do a top 8 starting level with the other top climbers and other climbers with similar stats. Thus, Kwiatkowski was called for, eventhough I'm not convinced this really is a race for him, being a race more for the climbers than the puncheurs, I'd say. At least it feels that way. A top 10 should be doable on a decent day, fighting for a top 5 or even a podium on a brilliant day. That will take that the game threats the race as an ideal profile for Kwiatkowski though, combined with great daily form.
Herklotz for the win, obviously. Lecuisinier should be his rival for this one, but it's hard to see him beat Herklotz, no matter how the race plays out.
Looking forward to the race! Not too happy how AI has handled our dual leaderships so far this season, maybe it can turn around here. Though, admittedly Galta shouldn't be strong enough no matter what to be important towards the end of the race here, making me hope it turns out to be a good race for the hybrids |

Hopefully Dombrowski can carry on to the enthusiasm of the last stage in Tirreno, but I don't have many expectations from this race. Let's see what happens

It's always nervewrecking to enter a race where you "have to win". I know that with Herklotz here it's more like a have to top 2, but we still come here with the ambition to win - and with that in mind a lot can go wrong.

Alright. I can live with 2nd behind Herklotz when the finish is in a "sprint" like this. We can't match his qualities there despite Lecuisinier also being fairly fast and equally resistant. We need more altitude to beat him.
Mavrikakis with his first "show" of the season to take 17th, which is very nice. David de la Cruz yet again utter crap. Really dissapointed with his attitude this far. Today not even in the top 100 when he should have been last man standing with Lecuisinier.

Had some good hopes of Spilak entering the top-5 as I saw him in the leading group in the final km's, but guess his lack of stamina/resistance compared to the top riders became too important before he could really use his hill stat. Still an okay result by him
Thank you for the great report, Abhi, and congratulations to Puma!

Oh my!
Silvio wins, Nikias does amazing to nearly make the podium, and Lennard is our second best finisher in a great 32nd place?
This is even more than I could've hoped for.
Congrats Festina for really putting up a fight, MOL for somehow getting Cattaneo to perform on the least Cattaneo-esque finale, and Kraftwerk for that great ride by Arndt.
Thank you Abhi for really capturing the intensity of the decisive moments and the report as a whole.
