We're in sunny Costa Rica for the first edition of the Clasico San Jose. A puncher's race, this will bring an end to the first month of racing in the 2021 ManGame. The best of the best on the hills from the CT, and their teammates, and some decent riders from the PCT have turned up to this race to etch their name into history as the first ever winner of this race.
The course is 212+ kilometers, where the riders will cover a loop around San Jose multiple times from either direction. There are a couple of higher climbs but the business end should favour the punchers, the ones with the strong kick up shorter slopes.
| MON | HIL | STA | RES | ACC | Eiking | 69 | 80 | 78 | 74 | 76 | Boswell | 71 | 80 | 77 | 73 | 76 | Chaves | 76 | 79 | 74 | 73 | 72 | Bystrom | 68 | 79 | 75 | 72 | 76 | Calmejane | 71 | 77 | 73 | 76 | 76 | Palini | 70 | 78 | 75 | 68 | 74 | Budyak | 74 | 78 | 72 | 67 | 68 | Felline | 66 | 77 | 75 | 73 | 78 | Paez | 72 | 77 | 74 | 70 | 76 | Tsatevich | 62 | 77 | 74 | 73 | 75 | Vliegen | 67 | 77 | 76 | 70 | 74 | Bratashcuk | 71 | 77 | 75 | 70 | 67 | Paulus | 74 | 77 | 71 | 68 | 71 | Kanepejs | 67 | 77 | 72 | 71 | 71 | Mudarra | 68 | 77 | 74 | 70 | 68 | Goh | 74 | 76 | 74 | 74 | 68 |
Eiking and Boswell start of as the top favourites for this race, and they really are the punchers to beat in the division.
Chaves is the best climber among the favourites, but it remains to be seen if that becomes an important on this course. He didn't have a great time in Gisborne and will be hoping to make amends here.
Bystrom is a better pure puncher, with better energy stats but overall, the former should be slightly stronger. With Calmejane, Trans have an excellent second leader, who himself is well capable of challenging for the win in a race like this. It remains to be seen whether team orders come into play.
Strava too have dual leadership at this race, with both Palini and Felline expected to be challenging in and around the Top 5 spots.
Popo4Ever have brought the trio of Budyak, Brataschuk and Kanepejs to this C2 race, to try for the Top 10 spots and depth scoring. Bralirwa with Vliegen and Duolingo with Goh are the other PCT teams with riders among the favourites.
Tstatevich had the best start to the season, winning Gisborne. He will hope to continue that form here. Paez also did well but will hope to do even better. Paulus leads for Tajford.
| MON | HIL | STA | RES | ACC | Skjerping | 70 | 77 | 71 | 67 | 65 | Rodriguez Galindo | 74 | 76 | 72 | 72 | 67 | Gogl | 69 | 76 | 74 | 72 | 75 | Tanovitchii | 68 | 76 | 75 | 72 | 71 | Brandao | 73 | 76 | 69 | 71 | 69 | Lietaer | 67 | 76 | 74 | 71 | 71 | McCormick | 66 | 76 | 74 | 71 | 73 | Ziesler | 70 | 76 | 74 | 70 | 65 | Khederi | 74 | 76 | 68 | 67 | 73 | Bugge | 74 | 75 | 73 | 74 | 72 | Weiss | 63 | 76 | 75 | 70 | 74 | Pibernik | 65 | 76 | 76 | 68 | 74 | Molard | 71 | 75 | 73 | 73 | 75 |
Quite a few PCT teams have riders in the outsiders, with Polar as the only team with a leader among this group who don't have someone in the favourites' list already!

Our home race and the first big goal of the season, winning it. Achieving the objective is quite a challenge though, Chaves has work to do for that, but hopefully he'll not be as reckless as he was at Gisborne. As much as I love aggressive riding he needs to be patient and play his chances well. With luck Mudarra and Barbero can provide some help here too as they put a good effort in New Zealand.
Thank you for the excellent preview and good luck to everyone! |

Paez with another chance early in the season to get a good result. After 5th in Gisborne, I would definitely hope for another Top 5 and he’s always a chance of even better!

After the blow up in Gisborne, and dropping the first objective of the season. Eiking and company better do better here!

Khederi never did much in these types of races last year, let's see if Vliegen can do better. The puncheur field in CT feels slightly worse compared to the previous season, so who knows. But there's no pressure, any points at all would be a bonus. Rooting for Volcanica here in their home race!

I'm really curious what this race will bring. In the first race, both my leaders did good but I hoped for a slightly better result. In the next race, which was C1 Calmejane was alone without Bystrom next to big names or strong competition and he didn't do best in hilly parts. but I hope this time in a lower category can be better.

A little more total climibing here than Gisborne so hopefully the low MT guys will be less of a threat. On the other hand we can't expect Eiking and Chaves to both self-destruct again. Also, the McCormick support team is pretty weak with my other quality climbers all in Venezuela.
Would be happy with another top 5.

This sort of field is pretty stacked for what I was hoping for. Here's hoping for the MON stat to be a relevant factor in the outcome.

Home race for Volcanica, so I hope they win it! Chaves will need to resist the urge of attacking with 150 km to go though

I'm gonna guess the MO stat had a fair bit of influence, but the final results still look a bit weird to me.
Congrats to those who did well.

What a weird result, but what a beautiful result for us as well I was surprised to see us working at the front of the peloton throughout the race, but Vliegen certainly justified that. These types of unexpected bonus points could be huge for us.
Also shoutout to Natnael Tesfatsion for sneaking into the points at 25th as a level 1 rider. Incredible racing to be with Vliegen for so long. That more than makes up for Khederi once again being slightly disappointing, but maybe he was among those working early on.
Shame for Chaves to only finish 7th here for Volcanica, but he wasn't the only favorite to struggle. Again, weird result, but I think it's kinda cool that this is possible, even if it's of course frustrating for the top favorites. Thank you for the report Abhi, very enjoyable and thorough read!

Well, that's an unexpected winner! Congratulations to cycleYorkshire and all other strong PCT teams, although I would have preferred all of you to finish a bit lower Shame that home team Volcanica couldn't get closer than a seventh place.

Nice result for Shirota in a C2 race for us. Always want to score well in races, and while its not much for us, its not a 0 pointer which is positive.
Thanks for the report

This was definitely a disappointment from my two leaders Bystrom and Clemanje who were dropped in the last climb.
If this is a prediction of how the season will go then we will be another two seasons at CT level.
