Tour of Tasmania - Stage 2

Stage Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/profile.jpg

After the stage 1 warm up, stage 2 is a crucial stage. Just short of 150 km in length we have 6 KOM sprints, including one on the finish line. The puncheurs will look to make this a difficult day for everyone else.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0001.jpg

First rider striking out of the peloton is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Duchesne. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Stoltz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Culey and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kanerva look to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0002.jpg

The peloton is pretty agressive in chasing this one down, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Duchesne manages to bag the 5 KOM pts ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kanerva and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Stoltz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0003.jpg

The chase is still on as we pass the first intermediate sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Duchesne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kanerva and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Culey take the points. Their gap thought is at only 40''.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kanerva is still holding on for now, but others are just about to be caught now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/tti.png Kanerva actually gets caught by other attackers before the next KOM. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Rodriguez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Bayly take 5 and 3 pts, with the last one going to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters who is looking to join them up the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters manages to catch up and we have another rider trying to bridge up in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis. This move might have more to it as they're almost 2 minutes ahead of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/hsk.png Rodriguez and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Sergis are dropped as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Bayly and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters increase their tempo on the category 3 climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gzl.png Peters went solo afterwards, but it was a futile attempt as he got caught with 53 km remaining on the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0009.jpg

The next cat. 4 test is passed by the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Mostov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Neuman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Herregodts grab the points working at the front. Curiously pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Kurianov who is still the KOM leader and near the front is not interested in picking these points that could secure the jersey. Or he simply isn't allowed as he's looking after his team leader?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0010.jpg

We are seeing a fight though for the final intermediate sprint and even leadouts. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Wackermann for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Kiriakidis for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0011.jpg

It's really no contest as the Frenchman easily wins it. Could be some vital points to finish higher in the final points ranking. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates is 2nd and for him it could be vital sprint points and bonus seconds. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Kalaba takes the final 2 pts on offer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0012.jpg

The final KOM before the finish is a category 2 climb again taken by the peloton, namely pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Rohendi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Quita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Jones and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Herregodts. So if my calculations are correct pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Kurianov has managed to keep his jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0013.jpg

Last 5 km and the rider are now on the steepest section of the penultimate climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Waeytens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Prevar are near the front, but the rest of the favorites are still hiding in this reduced peloton of 81 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Padun increases the pace over the top of the hill and he has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Waeytens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Buchmann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Prevar in his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0015.jpg

Onto the final climb now and it's pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Buchmann that hits the front with 2 km to go. The steepest part is at the end, but still not overly difficult at around 8-9%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Buchmann still leading going under the flamme rouge, but no one has really given a big effort yet. We're waiting for this uphill sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hagen is next to the German's wheel looking to pounce.

Behind them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Prevar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Meintjes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich. Behind them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Waeytens and the ISA duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Vakoc and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda.

Even further back we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Tenorio on the left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney on the right. The latter has two helpers on the other side of the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0017.jpg

Final 500 m, stepper section and the riders have let it rip now! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hagen is at the front alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Vakoc. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Tenorio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney have moved up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Meintjes lost a bit of ground.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hagen in the lead with 200 m left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Vakoc in 2nd, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Phinney is moving up further, squeezing by the barriers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0019.jpg

And the American has an extra gear to go to in the final meters!! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Taylor Phinney wins the stage!! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/min.png Hagen has to settle for 2nd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Vakoc is 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Tenorio finishes strongly in 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda add to ISA's success by placing 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier 6th, it was a good day for the climbers. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Waeytens 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin 8th with a strong finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/map.png Buchmann 9th and completing the top 10 is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Meintjes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Reports/PT/Tasmania/S2/PCM0020.jpg

Well I don't think it's premature to say that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Taylor Phinney has already won this race overall. He takes the leader's jersey and is the main favourite for tomorrow's TT. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fes.png Coquard will have to cede his points jersey tomorrow, but he will deservedly wear it due to his intermediate sprint win today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/zpc.png Kurianov indeed confirms his KOM victory without needing a single point today and the best young rider's jersey goes to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen.
