Welcome to the new Team HQ for Voyagin Bird x Moncler, formerly known as Rakuten and Meiji as part of the MGUCI. We drop down from PT to PCT for the 2nd time in our history, being unable to avoid the dreaded relegation zone of cycling's top division.

With new sponsors, we expect to see big changes within the team, but first we must get through renewals, where nothing will be revealed until it is legally allowed to do so. We wouldn't want to incur any fines. (extra)

Voyagin a subsidiary of Rakuten takes over as the head sponsor for the team. They are a travel, accommodations and activities firm based in Japan, focusing on the East Asia region. With Covid affecting travel worldwide, Rakuten felt the need to help advertise one of its struggling branches within the organization, which will hopefully become prosperous again soon, once it is safe to do so again. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will hopefully spur more travelers to visit the region by 2022, so the timing of the switch makes sense in that regard as hopefully more travelers who plan to visit the region become aware of the brand. A much smaller budget is to be expected and some have even said this move shows that Rakuten has more or less given up on the team, although that remains to be seen.

Bird is a transportation company that specializes in e-scooters, scooters and bike sharing, in over 100 cities around the globe. In 2017 it became the fastest company to ever reach a 1 Billion dollar valuation, which it went on to double by June 2018. Its focus on sustainable transportation make it a great partnership with not only Voyagin, but cycling in general with hopes of expanding further. Its biggest Competitor Lime was a sponsor for the PTs top team a season ago, so Bird has high hopes it has picked the right team to support for the future. They have agreed to be patient, but as a partnership currently, they are not spending an arm and a leg to run the team. With questions about Rakuten/Voyagin's involvement, Bird will have to see progress before they take on more of the responsibility and finances.

Moncler is the teams third sponsor. While the MGUCI rules mean they may not end up in the teams "official" title, they are as much a co sponsor as Bird. Originally a French Fashion and Skiwear company, they are now an Italian brand, with French roots. With continuing growth, and small time collaborations with other sporting ventures, their collaboration with a Danish bike brand helped dip their toes into the cycling world, where they now hope to take their next step and follow in the footsteps of Rapha and Palace, who have helped to make cycling more fashionable with its 2020 Giro d'Italia collab. With Cycling and Skiing using similar materials and cycling clothes becoming more popular in global fashion such as "biker shorts" being one example of this trend, now seems like the perfect time for a luxury brand to enter the market. Working with Le Col they have come up with the clothing and materials for the squad, and helped create an eye-catching design, which will certainly be polarizing. The collaboration hopes to increase the appeal towards cycling with higher fashion while giving Moncler the opportunity to create some unique pieces aimed at cyclists who also want to stand out even when they are on the bike.

TechnoGym joins on, as our final sponsor of the team, which will provide the teams training equipment. The official provider of gym equipment for several Football teams, the Olympics, as well as F1 teams. With their stationary bikes and direct drive trainers, as well as Zwift and Rouvy implementation, riders will be able to train in state of the art conditions, even when weather would normally stop them.

Hum, not really liking the competition on the Italian market there, but good luck with your new sponsors nonetheless! You should definitely have a good base to go back up again, as you wouldn't even have relegated with a bit more of luck I'd say...

Sorry Pfft

Thanks as well. Depending on how renewals go I do think I have a good chance of going back up, but it really all depends on how they go, so theres lots of pressure to cut wages as much as possible with each and every rider.

Always a fan of crazy jerseys! I imagine you'll be amongst the promotion favorites this season with an immediate bounce back to the PT

Actually, this was a team that would normally have stayed in the PT. But Quintana was very disappointed. The good start of last season didn't help either. Hopefully you will rise again.

Thanks. I'm hoping so, but its looking like I will probably be away completely the opening weekend of transfers (if my calculations are correct) which may put a wrench in my transfer plans.

I hope you're right. Quintana I think will do better this year, theres really no explanation for it as he was great in some races and poor in others, but at PCT I think he will be fine. Thanks.

With renewals now completed, Voyagin heads into the transfer window looking to offload some of the higher earners from its accounts in order to cover some of the fines its been given from the MGUCI for ending renewals above the PCT salary cap. Nairo Quintana had a decent season previously, but is hoping to return to the ProTour where his services are best matched. Quintana himself has said he would prefer to race at PT, but is not officially asking out of the team, as he sees them as a solid challenger for promotion. Nevertheless, we feel he will attract interest from PT teams looking at a solid one week stage racer.

Hayakawa has been a long serving member of the team, and has really becoming a great wage/pts earner for the team. However with Liu taking another step in his progression, the team feels it is time to move on from Hayakawa, who would make a great leader at CT level, and a great depth option at PCT. The same can be said for Kuboki, who was one of the teams best scorers in PCT just two seasons ago, with his great versatility on Time trials, hills and sprints.

Barbier is poised to become either a nice SPR+COB rider, or one of the best leadouts in the business, with his great RES and Flat stats in the future, if trained correctly.

Overall the team is hoping to finish the transfer window with 4 great scoring options, as well as add some younger talents to the mix, to help replace the older riders which have departed the team this offseason. Now more than ever, the team is willing to listen to offers on just about any rider, and will consider serious offers for any rider as well, so long as a replacement can be lined up elsewhere.

We hope to hear from all interested parties Smile

Hayakawa leaving? Must admit that comes as a surprise. Not that I need him, but He seems like a very good fit in your team. I guess it's a wage thing Smile

At least I won't be bothering you about Costagli this year Wink
Maybe about someone else, though ^^

He doesn't need to leave, but I'd like to see what I can get for him, and with Liu taking over the top spot, it feels like the right time. Also yes, I'd like to free up wage space to allocate towards either a stage racer or a talent.

Indeed, I wasn't planning to renew him, but I'm not sure if I was allowed to say that or not, so it was a surprise until now. I have a feeling I know who it is, but I'm happy its any of them I guess Pfft

I think a swap for Quintana may end up being the best move for me, in which case I'd take on a rider of lesser wages (and value). Not sure if he's the one you're interested in, but I could think of a rider on your team that fits perfectly for that kind of deal Pfft

Andrea Bagioli 1.00 22yo Talent €290,000

72777575777675606973716677
70767969747473606977786871

Andrea Bagioli joins us, as probably our third highest FA acquisition ever, behind Damiano Cunego and Nairo Quintana, both of which were signed while we were in PT. Andrea is capable of becoming an extremely versatile rider, either as a stage racer/climber hybrid, or as a pure puncheur with great acceleration and sprint. He's arguable the 3rd best puncheur in his age group, depending on how a certain Spaniard and Brit are trained themselves. While Lyu seemed like the obvious successor to Kinoshita last season, the team now has an even better candidate, who with training should become one of the best in the world just like Tomohiro. The price to get Bagioli was steep, but I feel will be worth it in the long run.

Shoi Matsuda 1.00 22yo Talent €55,000

71677769737463606876646470

Shoi was our 2nd biggest target of the transfer window after Bagioli, and came for a much better price tag. A future TT beast, or great allrounder, grabbing him for 55,000 feels like a steal. He should be very solid on hills as well, and could even end up as an elite leadout man with 77 RES and 76 FL.

Sindre Skjostad Lunke 4.100 28yo Stage Racer €120,000
Fl Mo Hi TT St Rs Rc Co Sp Ac Fi Dh Pr
69787273767478586064686976

Lunke joins as our backup stage race leader. He had plans to train in the high mountains this off-season, but they were cancelled at the last minute. He gives the team a good 2nd option, and will need to punch above his weight in some cases, but with several years before a decline, he should be another solid long term rider for the team with decent depth scoring potential.

Mingrun Chen 2.49 25yo Stage Racer €50,000
Fl Mo Hi TT St Rs Rc Co Sp Ac Fi Dh Pr
68716862707373566567566362
69777462717677566573626362

Speaking of good long term investments, Mingrun Chen fits the team perfectly, as he joins the team with the most Chinese riders in the peloton currently. He will be a great depth climber on the team as well, and should be a solid breakaway and KOM rider for future GTs

Leszek Plucinski 4.100 31yo Teammate €50,000
Fl Mo Hi TT St Rs Rc Co Sp Ac Fi Dh Pr
71737271707071596970696970

Plucinski joins as a solid teammate, who will be able to support on nearly every terrain. We think he will be a great pickup for minimum wage, and bring great experience to the younger members of the team.

Itsuki Koide 1.00 22yo Stagiare €10,000
Fl Mo Hi TT St Rs Rc Co Sp Ac Fi Dh Pr
67666766626563606066606364
68737373677070606067616371

Koide joins us as a stagiare for this season. We identified him early on in the scouting process as a great future domestique, and would have loved to have him on full time, but due to wage limitations, joins as a stagiare.

Departures

At this time, we would also like to thank Quintana, Kuboki, and Hayakawa for their time with the team. Hayakawa has been one of the longest serving members of the team, and was regretfully let go in order to make room for Bagioli after no team had any interest in him for a minimum fee. The same can be said for Kuboki, who along with Hayakawa would have been great riders for us this season. The lack of interest in both was extremely surprising and really hindered the team during transfers. We hope they all have great seasons on their new teams, and for such low wages in the cases of Hayakawa and Kuboki, will likely end up as some of the best Points/per race day riders in the peloton.

Congrats on finally securing Bagioli Smile I obviously was after him and Aleotti as well, but as a newly promoted PCT team you can't really afford getting only talents ^^
By the way, he might be challenged by Schmid for 3rd best puncheur of his generation, as I could also make him arrive at 76Mo/79Hi Pfft

Thanks again for the Quintana deal, although it was a bit more expensive than initially concluded. By the way, I'd have loved to take Kuboki, but just didn't have the funds anymore (else I'd definitely have gone for him once he was sacked)... Maybe I can help you out again next year Smile But for now, happy we finally got a deal, after it didn't happen for Costagli in the last two years Smile
And yeah, it obviously was Quintana I was most interested in Pfft And given that you didn't really use your money to buy other riders, it doesn't take a lot of imagination to see where that 1.4M fee could go Wink

Since Beltran is nearly finished his battles with Kinoshita, maybe we can have Bagioli/Ardila battles in the future, as he might also be interested as being one of the top puncheurs from this class. Of course if I ever again find myself in the same division as you Pfft

Thanks. Thats true, Schmid is good as well.

I'm sure you've seen my training by now, but with renewal fines, sacking fines and spending 700k on Lunke, I only had 600k or so left. Pfft

Pleased to let Chen ride for a team that really values him! Love the pick up of Bagioli, even if it didn't come without massive sacrifices. I think that Kinoshita and Shikai should keep you up no matter what, so really looking forward to seeing how your team stacks up in the future!

Glad we got a deal done for him. We need depth climbers in the future, and having ones from sponsor regions is always a great feeling.

Thats what I'm hoping. My depth is quite poor imo, so I'm hoping we stay mid-table this year, and challenge next year with (hopefully) reduced wages for most/Bagioli, to enable more space for those depth pieces.

Soooo Yeah....

Longtime Canadian manager for Voyagin is reportedly facing severe backlash from new sponsors, Bird, Moncler and Technogym, for failing to acquire the anticipated number of riders from the sponsors focus areas.

Moncler in particular was reportedly expecting atleast 5 Italian riders on the squad, while Bird wanted more riders from its two largest markets in North America and Western Europe.

What this means for the manager, as well as the sponsors involvement past this season is yet to be determined, but its a story to follow, as the season nears. One has to think poor performances may make any decision to pull out much easier, while good performances could well save the manager, and the partnerships.

Kinoshita is a rider we are shopping. As Im unsure if I will continue past this season, I think I'd like to see Kinoshita move on to a new team. I'm not for sure selling him as I may have one "Last Dance" with him (if this is my last season), and I think I'd prefer a Swap, rather than just transfer fee, but rather than have him hit the open market later, you can secure him now.

Andrea Bagioli wanted just a little too much for our liking and we need cap room. By splitting his wages 50/50 we will give the loaning in team a sizeable transfer fee, for a pretty useful U25 rider in our opinion.

Jiankun Liu we dont anticipate challenging for sprints too much, Liu is available for the right offer. He should always be a challenger for Top 5's in PCT and the occasional win.

Kuroeda's are both available. Mostly if I dont think my other riders are gaining acceptable interest, so they could be had for a bargain. Of course an enticing offer right away could change everything too. I dont really focus on cobbles at all, but a cobble focused team could get the most out of them for sure.

With all that being said, no rider is safe from being sold if there is enough interest.

Thanks for stopping by Smile
