Monthly Review

For a second season in a row, I don't have any race days in January. With a handful of new Pro Tour teams in the peloton and a bunch of riders switching teams. Now seems like a good time to do a deep dive on the cycling scene.

Taking advantage of some free time I have right now. Plus, doesn't hurt to go quick to stop you guys from turning Marcus into a super beast too soon.

The crowd was buzzing inside Craven Cottage. This is what it's all about. Blood pumping. Cup football at its finest. Win or go home. We were home, and we wanted to send Aston Villa packing. Pull the upset, take all the glory.

FA Cup vs. Aston Villa
February 1, 2025
Fourth Round: Fulham's first top-flight test since playing Wolves in 2023.

Spoiler
Aston Villa 3, Fulham 1

i.imgur.com/3l9CVQC.jpg

Summary: Craven Cottage erupts as Fulham's capitalizes on 75% possession in the first 13 minutes. After Marcus Diamond drew a penalty in the box, Aboubakar Kamara steps to the spot and slots the ball into the net, 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 going into halftime after Aston Villa hit the post in the 26th minute and then the crossbar in the 42nd minute.

Villa finally broke down Fulham's backline in the 55th minute. Bjarne Leren tapped in the equalizer off a simple cross. Momentum has shifted.

On a counter-attack in the 89th minute, Dean McCloskey delivered the dagger. Fulham put too many guys forward and it cost them. Although, Fulham thought they pulled the game level 2-2 in the 93rd minute, but Kamara was flagged for offsides. A breakaway going the other way was stopped on cynical tackle in the box.

Luka Cancarevic scored the penalty to seal Fulham's fate, 3-1.

Rating: 7.3 - Was the best Fulham player on the pitch today, but it wasn't enough to get the job done. If it's any consolation, Aston Villa got knocked out the next round, by the same score of 3-1, against my favourite team growing up: Tottenham Hotspurs. Sweet justice.

Player of Game: Bjarne Leren, Aston Villa (8.3)

Match Day #31 at W. Bromwich Albion (18-5-7, 61 Points, 1st)
February 8, 2025
Top two teams in the league going head-to-head.

Spoiler
West Bromwich Albion 3, Fulham 0

i.imgur.com/FUx0O0a.jpg

Summary: The game had the feeling that one goal was going to be enough. Well, West Bromwich Albion scored three in the final five minutes to stab a sword through Fulham's heart.

Rating: 6.4 - Coach let us have it after the game. Frustrated locker room right now. Our hopes of winning the league have taken a massive blow.

Player of Game: Daniel Finch, West Bromwich Albion (8.8)

Match Day #32 vs. Sheffield United (9-13-9, 36 Points, 15th)
February 15, 2025
Looking to avoid three straight losses for the first time this season.

Spoiler
Sheffield United 7, Fulham 6

i.imgur.com/w47keAY.jpg

Summary: No, your eyes aren't deceiving you. Eight different goal scorers racked up 13 combined goals. Fulham never led, trailing 3-1 and 4-2. But tied the game twice at 5-5 and 6-6. But, David Brooks made sure there was a winner in this absolute thriller with the final goal coming in the 86th minute.

A 6-6 draw would have been the highest scoring draw in Sky Bet history. The 7-6 result goes down as highest scoring game in the modern-day history of the league. One for the record books for sure.

Rating: 7.1 - That was utter chaos and then some. Never thought scoring six goals wouldn't be enough. Or, that we scored six goals and I didn't get a goal or an assist.

Player of Game: Timmy Abraham, Fulham (9.3)

Match Day #33 at Burton Albion (7-14-11, 32 Points, 20th)
February 18, 2025
Not much recovery time after what happened three days ago.

Spoiler
Burton Albion 2, Fulham 1

i.imgur.com/zMwFIJo.jpg

Summary: Fulham's fall from grace continues.

Rating: 6.3 - Bad.

Player of Game: Gary Talbot, Burton Albion (7.8)

Match Day #34 at Burnley (16-9-9, 57 Points, 5th)
February 25, 2025
Suffered a head gash during training, as if things can't get worse.

Spoiler
Burnley 4, Fulham 2

i.imgur.com/Z3vxSkM.jpg

Summary: There was a glimmer of hope when Aboubakar Kamara scored to give Fulham a 2-1 lead early into the first half. It was false hope. Fulham's month-long slump continues. Five straight defeats.

Rating: 6.4 - Still bad. Played with stitches in my head.

Player of Game: Ben Brereton, Burnley (8.8)

FA Cup Run & Viva la Villa (Resolved): Nobody correctly predicted Marcus Diamond's rating against Aston Villa, so no rewards there.

But, DavidCorperial did correctly pick that Fulham's FA Cup run would end in the Fourth Round. His reward: From now until the end of the 2024-25 football season, you can pick any game for Marcus Diamond to have +1 increase on all his attributes for that single game.

Brutal: Given Fulham's and Diamond's performance this month, an unprecedented stat lock of three attributes will be locked. Any attribute that doesn't receive at least 6.0 points will be at-risk of being locked.

I didn't sign-up for this, I was invited. After winning a bronze medal at the 2024 Olympics in the Omnium, I was invited to take part in the Omnium World Championships to kick start my 2025 campaign. This isn't my specialty, but I had a lot of fun on the track in Paris and consider myself a jack-of-all trades.

Some familiar faces from the Olympic velodrome but, with no nation restrictions, only the so-called best Omnium riders in the world are here to challenge for this coveted title. So, arguably, tougher competition here than the Olympics.

And most of those who didn't compete at the Olympics want a little revenge for not getting selected from their respective countries. Here are my 15 competitors:

L.N. Hansen Daniel Staniszewski M. Coles-Lyster
Alex Vogel Maria Martins Erik M. Haga
Mariia Miliaeva Vanessa Romano Matthew Walls
Emily Kay Francesca Selva Matteo Donega
Letizia Pasternoster J-W van Schip Matias Malmberg

Again, we see teammate/roommate Alex Vogel on the start line.

Points Race

Spoiler
i.imgur.com/XROOp3z.jpg

Summary: Great Britain opens the points race with a strong statement. Matthew Walls and Marcus Diamond cross the line 1-2. Donega and Martins collect the remaining points.

i.imgur.com/dOnblif.jpg

Walls is making a mockery of this event. Going solo to win the second sprint. He is clearly upset/motivated that Diamond got to represent Great Britain at the Olympics.

The secondary placings went to Martins, Staniszewski and Diamond.

i.imgur.com/4nYgxQm.jpg

A new winner! Martorell Haga takes the third sprint in front of Paternoster, Diamond and Kay. That marks the halfway point.

i.imgur.com/izQBaob.jpg

GB tag team. Diamond and Walls break away to take the fourth sprint. Romano and Vogel get the scraps a few meters later. That gives Walls 13 points with his fellow countryman sitting on 11 points. Two sprints left.

i.imgur.com/wcQjH6r.jpg

Consistent Diamond wins the fifth sprint. The Olympic bronze medalist and Tour de France green jersey winner is in his element. He has collected points on every sprint so far.

Behind him are Romano, Olympic gold medalist Hansen collected his first points and quickly becoming his arch rival, Walls.

Diamond leads 16-14 over Walls heading to the last sprint.

i.imgur.com/qjSSU0T.jpg

DIAMOND! The Brit executes a perfect sprint and is unmatched!

Result: 1st - Had to collect the most points possible in what I consider my best event. This is a fantastic start, but far from over.

Spoiler

Summary: After two brilliant rounds and seeing everybody else go first in the 200-meter TT, leader Marcus Diamond just needed to score one point to secure the World Championship before the final event.

As expected, he did not. And finished last.

Francesca Selva bested Hansen and Miliaeva in the race against the clock. But, defending Olympic gold medalist Hansen will be the only rider who could tie Diamond in the Elimination Race.

Result: 16th, 1st Overall - Did enough in the first two events that my time trialing abilities won't matter this time around. All I got to do in the Elimination Race is avoid the first three eliminations or make sure Hansen doesn't win and I'm a World Champion!

Elimination Race

i.imgur.com/tkMEPzJ.jpg

Spoiler
i.imgur.com/YXwxeLh.jpg

Summary: Well, that is the definition of anti-climatic. It only takes one round to decide who the World Champion will be this year as Hansen is the first rider eliminated. Which of course means...

Marcus Diamond is the 2025 Omnium World Champion!

Diamond does have some history left to chase. The most points scored at the World Championships under this scoring system was set by Omnium legend Benjamin Thomas during his win in 2021 with 55 points.

Diamond would need 5th place to tie, 4th or better to break the record.

i.imgur.com/alE1qt9.jpg

Not meant to be. Diamond plays it too safe and is eliminated in 13th.

i.imgur.com/QOHwZO9.jpg

The last race of the day is won by Malmberg over Miliaeva.

The result helps Malmberg crack the Top 5, while Miliaeva makes up for her heartbreaking 4th at the Olympics with a runner-up finish at the Worlds. Taking the last spot on the podium is Vanessa Romano.

Result: 13th, 1st Overall - World Champion... Unbelievable.

No more bragging for Vogel, who finished 13th. Pretty sure a World Championship tops an Olympic silver medal. Although, I'm sure she will argue otherwise. Guess I'll be back next year to defend my crown.

Summary: Rain and cobbles, never a good mix.

But, this crash with 90kms to go happens on the tarmac. Lots of big names getting caught out with the peloton down to 30 riders. Surely some of them will make it back though.

i.imgur.com/KY035Ip.jpg

We hit the next cobbled sector a few kilometers later and a crash in the depleted peloton. Marcus Diamond just missing this while some of the outside favourites aren't so lucky. This is a mess.

i.imgur.com/J8NQuYb.jpg

In the chaos, Diamond decides to attack. Nobody follows. Why would they? Still 85kms to go. Diamond does have a teammate two minutes up the road, Demi Vollering, who got in the morning breakaway.

i.imgur.com/uGG9GT7.jpg

The regrouped peloton let Diamond dangle off the front for 25kms before dragging him back with Michael Matthews, who dropped from the breakaway. Speaking of which, the 18-cyclist breakaway remains 2 minutes ahead.

i.imgur.com/YY9rGJY.jpg

Diamond says goodbye to the peloton with 33kms to go. What a waste of an attack that was. He's legs, check that, whole body is feeling it.

i.imgur.com/HRiMouA.jpg

Funny enough. Diamond actually had the right idea.

The breakaway goes on to win the day, keeping their two-minute gap over the favourites. 37-year-old Marta Bastianelli, who jumped across to the breakaway in the final 25kms takes the victory ahead of Lukasz Wisniowski and Jasper Stuyven.

Result: 47th (+5'32") - Note to self, I'm not Superman. Although, I knew the breakaway had a good shot at winning with all the crashes in the bunch and the number of riders racing hard up front. I just didn't have the leg power to cross the gap. The team still did OK despite my failure: Demi Vollering in 13th and Tebiro Pienaar in 25th.

Monthly Review

The supporters are getting anxious. Promotion is no longer a guarantee for Fulham after an ongoing five-game losing streak. With 12 league games remaining, half of them in March, the team has to turn things around in a hurry.

What better way to do that than against the second-best team in the league?

Match Day #35 vs. B&H Albion (19-6-10, 67 Points, 2nd)
March 1, 2025
I'm sick of talking about our collapse, let's rebuild and move forward.

Spoiler
Fulham 2, Brighton and Hove Albion 0

i.imgur.com/ZDimrHU.jpg

Summary: Fulham puts aside past demons. It's the prowess of midfielder Marcus Diamond with the opening goal and the closing assist that helps Fulham finally snap its dreaded losing streak.

media.giphy.com/media/SbPUFKNCCkmFuVf7YJ/giphy.gif

Rating: 8.3 - We back baby!

Player of Game: Aboubakar Kamara, Fulham (8.7)

Match Day #36 vs. Bristol City (11-15-9, 42 Points, 16th)
March 4, 2025
Bristol City embarrassed us 6-0 at its place earlier, return the favor?

Spoiler
Bristol City 5, Fulham 1

i.imgur.com/degMjDW.jpg

Summary: Game of missed opportunities, for Fulham. Bristol City with another convincing win by scoring on five of its seven shots on target. Meanwhile, Fulham scored once on 22 shots (10 on target).

Rating: 7.8 - By far the best player on the pitch of Fulham. Show me another guy who can get a 7.8 rating and have his team lose by four goals... But, yeah, it's not about me. We, the team, have to play better.

Player of Game: Niclas Eliasson, Bristol City (9.6)

Match Day #37 at Walsall (9-19-8, 35 Points, 22nd)
March 8, 2025
Must-win game, anything but three points is a disappointment.

Spoiler
Walsall 4, Fulham 3

i.imgur.com/1vy7m1r.jpg

Summary: Fulham just can't seem to shake its bad form caused by awful defense and not finishing chances. Missed penalty and a breakaway saved in the 94th minute prevent Fulham from getting points in this one. They now slip three points away from being out of a playoff spot.

Rating: 6.7 - Picked up another assist, but means nothing in a loss.

Player of Game: Sean Brockbank, Walsall (9.1)

Match Day #38 vs. Rotherham (9-13-15, 42 Points, 18th)
March 11, 2025
No rest for the weary, Fulham's fourth match in 11 days.

Spoiler
Rotherham 3, Fulham 0

i.imgur.com/B1lIV6w.jpg

Summary: Fulham gets laughed off the pitch.

Rating: 6.8 - If you're frustrated, how do you think I feel?

Player of Game: Aaron Murphy, Rotherham (9.0)

Match Day #39 at Reading (12-10-16, 52 Points, 11th)
March 15, 2025
London media outlets are calling for Coach Coppinger to be sacked.

Spoiler
Reading 5, Fulham 1

i.imgur.com/Auy8hcL.jpg

Summary: Atrocious. Grant Gillam scores Fulham's 100th league goal of the season to at least avoid consecutive shutouts.

Hours after the game ended, the media was informed head coach James Coppinger had resigned. Assistant coach Peter Grant was named the interim head coach. Fulham has now dropped to 7th in the Sky Bet table and out of a playoff spot.

Rating: 5.8 - Sad to see coach go, but something had to be done.

Player of Game: Jacob Murphy, Reading (9.5)

Match Day #40 vs. QPR (16-14-9, 57 Points, 9th)
March 22, 2025
How to lose a fanbase: 6 points in last 11 league games.

Spoiler
QPR 3, Fulham 1

i.imgur.com/Ak1fhtM.jpg

Summary: New coach, same problems.

Rating: 6.7 - Got an assist, but I don't think I have ever hated the game of football as much as I do right now. This is (explicit).

Player of Game: Matthew Virtue, QPR (8.3)

Brutal (Resolved): After February's woeful performance, the following three attributes have been locked: First Touch, Teamwork and Vision.

Real or Fake: Despite Fulham's poor play recently, rumors are spreading like a wild fire that reigning La Liga champions and superpower Real Madrid are interested in pursuing Marcus Diamond as a transfer target this offseason. Seems too good to be true, and would Diamond even consider the transfer if it meant fighting for playing time off the bench? Just something to ponder over the coming weeks.
