imo every nation had to sit behind Dutch, or no chance to win Gold and maybe Silver, they had 4 potential winners...if the peloton catches early the break, Van Vleuten/Van der Breggen going solo and Vos/Vollering take 2nd behind, that's most likely scenario

I really, really love an underdog story. And Anna Kiesenhofer has made my day. I was absolutely delighted to see her win. Everything that happened after she crossed the finish line made me think that a movie based on this would look good. Perhaps named... "The Loneliness of an Olympic Champion."?
P.S. Once again the old lesson surfaces: it's not enough to pack your team with superstars. |

Discourse is weird. Apparently Belgium knew a rider was in front. So how come no one else realized it? This is all very weird and it does seem to me that some teams are trying to cover up their embarassment to some extent. Can't understand how no one realized a rider was still in front, even with no radios. |

Belgium just wanting to mess with the Dutch, love the banter
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

I can really imagine Kopecki overhearing the dutchies talking about first place and just silently smiling.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I think the Olympic RRs were dominated by fear, fear of Van Aert yesterday and fear of the Dutch team today. But if Van Aert did his best the Dutch team screwed their tactics badly. And it seems now that everybody on the losing side looks for excuses. No matter, well done Anna Kiesenhofer!

What a win from Kiesenhofer, first Gold Medal in cycling for us since 1896, it's been quite a while.
I think the Dutchies just fucked up, with none of the 4 wanting to sacrifice themselves. It is a shame for AVV after what happened at Rio but that's life I guess. Can't quite understand how some teams knew there was someone ahead and some didn't. For example it was pretty obvious that Kopecky knew she just got 4th and not 3rd when she crossed the line so don't really know what happened there, but happy regardless.

Went to research more about Kiesenhofer's background and I have to say that she might be the first Cycling champion ever to have a profile on LinkedIn.
https://ch.linked...iesenhofer
A Mathematics background, and according to Michael Gogl on Twitter, she indeed stopped racing to focus on her studies. Really love these stories, will be following her closely now. Legend. |

Yeah and looking at that it seems like she already got her masters in mathematics at Cambridge at 21, insane.

To be fair, I think they just fucked up in as much as they didn't know someone was down the road. They thought they had raced right to get the gold. If she wasn't down the road, they would have got the gold.
Also, Carapaz must be so glad there was no-one from Movistar in that final selection group XD |

It surely is a tactical blunder by the dutch but Kiesenhofer left everything on the road , emptied the tank and it was enough. The other breakaway riders showed that the peloton did their homework well enough, but granting +10 minutes to a time trialist / climber who has won on the Mont Ventoux in the past is arguably stupid.
On the finish pic, AvV looked happy and I hope she considers it with time a won silver medal and not a lost gold medal.
Tomorrow the MTB race will be great. Hoping for VDP ofc!

Mathieu's out of contention, such a shame on lap 1 already.
Looks like a technical mistake over a rock jump, pushing his bike down rather than forward.

this will hopefully mean that the race is crazy fast as they obviously want to avoid Van der Poel coming back.
Schurter, Flueckiger, Avancini and Cooper have a little gap on Vader and Pidcock
