Congrats to Manuel Martinez on the stage win! Ruben outclassed by the Bahraini duo on the Blockhaus, though. Right now it seems that defending the spot on the podium will be tough enough. But we've still got a long way to go.
Thanks, one to remember for him for sure (and I'm so very bad at sprints in this game)! Blockhaus was dreadful and another prove of how hard rolling climbs are in game.
All things considered, we should be very happy after this first week though. With key stages spread out so widely, it's almost guaranteed that some have their form peak come too early.

GIRO D'ITALIA (2.GT) [3/5]
Stage 10 | 209 kms | Perugia › Montecatini Alto Post rest day action for the GC contenders with an almost __________/ stage to Montecatini Alto. Aru's acceleration was too much for anyone as he would chip away at his deficit with this win. Ruben lost 40" due to severely awarded gaps. 1 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | 4h42'50" | 2 | | Mikel Landa | Bahrain Victorious | + 9" | 3 | | Julian Arredondo | Movistar Team | + 17" | 4 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | + 29" | 5 | | Robert Power | Team BikeExchange | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 9 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | + 39" |
Stage 11 | 180 kms | Pisa › Monte Serra A strong acceleration also made the difference on the second ascent of Monte Serra, this time Landa's. The Basque moved into GC third, within 20" of Ruben. 1 | | Mikel Landa | Bahrain Victorious | 4h18'22" | 2 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | + 17" | 3 | | Aurélien Paret-Peintre | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | s.t. | 4 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | s.t. | 5 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | + 30" |
Stage 12 | 151.4 kms | Viareggio › Fanano The bunch handed away the stage win early on yet Chávarri couldn't follow KoM leader Elissonde. Guerreiro had to give everything to catch the elite group with Landa, Aru, Kudus, Formolo and Dunbar, only to get punished on the final short bump... Bahrain now 1-2 in the GC and Kudus only 4" from Ruben's third. 1 | | Kenny Elissonde | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | 3h56'53" | 2 | | Leopold König | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | + 4'52" | 3 | | Eder Chávarri | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | + 7'23" | 5 | | Mikel Landa | Bahrain Victorious | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 8 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | + 7'49" |
Stage 13 | 18.2 kms | The dreaded mountain time trial was set on Monte Cimone, the highest moutain of the northern Apennines. Caicedo was the first of us to set a fastest time, yet he would end just outside of the top 10.
Ruben was blessed with superb legs for the day. However, Landa seemed to be closing in swiftly at some point. But Ruben handled the steep slopes perfectly, saw Landa blew up and ended up riding 1'25" faster than him. Formolo and Aru finished closer but couldn't keep Ruben from winning the stage. 1 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | 46'29" | 2 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | + 25" | 3 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | + 37" | 4 | | Börje Kratzert | Team Jumbo-Visma | + 1'08" | 5 | | Julian Arredondo | Movistar Team | + 1'13" |
Stage 14 | 260 kms | La Spezia › Sanremo Stage 14 brought us Milano - Sanremo roads with Le Manie, Cipressa and Poggio on the menu. A breakaway with Ion Izagirre stranded at the foot of the final climb.
Team sprinter MartÃnez had a very good day and could just jump wheels when Guerreiro launched an attack on the Poggio. Some reacted and chased, but the catch wasn't made and Ruben secured his first GT stage win outside a time trial. 1 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | 6h55'44" | 2 | | Logan Owen | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | 3 | | Marco König | Bahrain Victorious | s.t. | 4 | | Moreno Hofland | EF Education - NIPPO | s.t. | 5 | | Arnaud Demare | Team DSM | s.t. |
Stage 15 | 204.7 kms | Ventimiglia › Briançon/ Col d'Izoard Mikel Landa was a DNS on the Agnello/ Izoard stage because of a broken wrist. Climbing talent Erbetta dropped his fellow escapees on Agnello and then secured his first big win.
Ruben couldn't follow the attacks on Izoard right away yet managed to catch up and drop the maglia rosa inside the last kilometer. With one week to go, Formolo showed some vulnerability on the last couple of stages. To be continued... 1 | | Benny Erbetta | CCC Team | 5h28'43" | 2 | | Silvio Herklotz | Israel Start Up Nation | + 4'31" | 3 | | Merhawi Kudus | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | + 5'54" | 4 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 5 | | Vincenzo Nibali | Astana - Premier Tech | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 8 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | + 6'27" | 9 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | + 6'36" |

Giro d'Italia (2.GT) [4/5]
Stage 16 | 50.7 kms | Pavia › Milano (ITT) The long flat time trial was expected to knock every rider outside the current top two out of contention and so it did. Except for Ruben, every other GC contender lost at least around two minutes to Formolo. Trek-Segafredo's Tom Wirtgen got a second stage win for Luxembourg going hundreds of a second faster than Drobisch. 1 | | Tom Wirtgen | Trek - Segafredo | 1h08'31" | 2 | | Till Drobisch | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | s.t. | 3 | | Ryan Mullen | Movistar Team | + 7" | 4 | | Victor Campenaerts | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | + 20" | 5 | | Geoffrey Curran | EF Education - NIPPO | + 40" | | ----- | | | | 6 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | + 41" | 7 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | + 53" |
Stage 17 | 175 kms | Milano › Verona The bunch took it easy on the flat 17th stage to Verona. Moreno Moser got away just over the climb to win his second GT stage after winning at Le Tour in 2019. 1 | | Moreno Moser | INEOS Grenadiers | 3h47'54" | 2 | | Jürgen Roelandts | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 3 | | Mathias Van Gompel | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. | 4 | | Francois Auguste | CCC Team | s.t. | 5 | | Luca Chirico | Vini Zabù | s.t. |
Stage 18 | | Vicenza › Cortina d'Ampezzo/ Passo Giau The first of four key stages to round up this 2021 edition ended on Passo Giau. Ruben overcame a tough moment but couldn't challenge for the win. Aru swept up breakaway riders Erbetta and Herklotz near the top and won his third stage. Ruben ended up gaining a handful of seconds in the overall standings. 1 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | 5h08'18" | 2 | | Benny Erbetta | CCC Team | s.t. | 3 | | Silvio Herklotz | Israel Start Up Nation | s.t. | 4 | | Börje Kratzert | Team Jumbo-Visma | + 23" | 5 | | Merhawi Kudus | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 6 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | + 23" | 7 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | + 41" |
Stage 19 | 205.3 kms | Selva di Val Gardena › Livigno Stage 19 included the Cima Coppi atop the majestic Passo dello Stelvio. Our own Jonathan Caicedo set a brutal pace about halfway the climb, and caused many to get dropped from the breakaway. Herklotz did the rest and near the top the breakaway was down to them two. Jonathan seemed to crack near the summit of the second climb, yet he would make it back to drop Herklotz definitively 700 meters from the final KoM banner. A short descent later he could celebrate his second GT stage win with us.
Ruben tried a thing on the Stelvio but could not go for a long range solo attack. He had a tough patch on the second climb and tried to go alone in the descent to the line but Kudus closed the gap. No GC changes today. 1 | | Jonathan Caicedo | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | 5h14'17" | 2 | | Silvio Herklotz | Israel Start Up Nation | + 37" | 3 | | Esteban Chaves | Movistar Team | + 4'52" | 4 | | Lachlan Morton | INEOS Grenadiers | + 5'31" | 5 | | Kenny Elissonde | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | s.t. |
Giro d'Italia 2021 GC after stage 19 1 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | 74h25'53" | 2 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | + 54" | 3 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | + 6'12" | 4 | | Merhawi Kudus | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | + 7'45" | 5 | | Pierre-Roger Latour | BORA - hansgrohe | + 8'53" | 6 | | Lachlan Morton | INEOS Grenadiers | + 9'23" | 7 | | Julian Arredondo | Movistar Team | + 14'53" | 8 | | Eddie Dunbar | Team DSM | + 15'42" | 9 | | Vincenzo Nibali | Astana - Premier Tech | + 16'27" | 10 | | Robert Power | Team BikeExchange | + 19'48" |

And there I thought Ruben would regain the lead with the TT and have to defend it till the end. Instead Formolo beat him - I had no idea he could do TTs. Well, 2nd is just about certain, which would be a good result. Plus another stage win, nicely done. Is there still a minute to be gained on the final two stages?

So did I, but both time trials were a little too flat and he didn't have his best day on both occasions... Even if he doesn't manage to gain enough time on the final weekend, two stage wins and a podium finish shouldn't leave him with many regrets.
Profiles of the last two stages in the spoiler:

Ah, yes, I know the variant. Certainly still two great opportunities to turn the tables. And if not we at least get an Italian winning his home GT.

One more than on most final weekends indeed.
If not, Formolo will make it winning his home GT twice in a row! |

GIRO D'ITALIA (2.GT) [5/5]
Stage 20 | 207.4 kms | Sondrio › Edolo/ Monte Colmo The final weekend started with a stage over Gavia and Mortirolo and a finish on Monte Colmo. Good old Daniel Martin showed his infamous final km legs ridding himself of Chérel near the red kite.
Guerreiro had his work chasing Formolo going up the last climb. He didn't have much left in the tank when he finally caught up but it turned out to be enough to take another handful of seconds. 1 | | Daniel Martin | BORA - hansgrohe | 6h30'28" | 2 | | Mikaël Chérel | AG2R Citroën Team | + 40" | 3 | | Benny Erbetta | CCC Team | + 2'02" | 4 | | Foeke Hillen | Team Jumbo-Visma | + 2'12" | 5 | | Merhawi Kudus | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 7 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | + 2'51" | 9 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | + 3'09" |
Stage 21 | 201 kms | Bergamo › Brescia No pan flat run into a regional or major city to conclude a Grand Tour this time; the ultimate stage featured no less than five ascents of the brutal 2nd cat Monte Maddalena just outside of Brescia.
Two laps in, Guerreiro got involved in a major crash that would cost both Nibali and Arredondo their top 10 spot in the final GC. Ruben and Latour made in back in time for the final climb.
Guerreiro wanted to follow first knowing that he had used up energy earlier on. He let Kudus and Aru go and when Formolo finally went, he found himself boxed in by two Bahrain riders. It was far too late to do something back when he could eventually pass 'em. All he could do was secure his second place in both the GC and points standings after Baillifard beat König for the last 2021 Giro stage win. 1 | | Valentin Baillifard | Israel Start Up Nation | 5h47'55" | 2 | | Leopold König | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | s.t. | 3 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | + 2'24" | 4 | | Francesco Bongiorno | Vini Zabù | + 2'32" | 5 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | + 3'08" | | ----- | | | | 9 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | + 5'29" |

Giro d'Italia 2021 :: Race recap
Final overall standings
In the end, Davide Formolo makes it two overall wins in a row, this time without winning a stage though. The high amount of TT kilometers and a crash of his only remaining GC rival on the final day gave him the edge this year.
Second Grand Tour overall podium finish for Ruben, yet this time he couldn't finish on the highest step.
1 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | 86h50'33" | 2 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | + 2'57" | 3 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | + 4'27" | 4 | | Merhawi Kudus | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | + 10'54" | 5 | | Lachlan Morton | INEOS Grenadiers | + 12'35" | 6 | | Pierre-Roger Latour | BORA - hansgrohe | + 13'18" | 7 | | Eddie Dunbar | Team DSM | + 17'42" | 8 | | Kenny Elissonde | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | + 25'56" | 9 | | Robert Power | Team BikeExchange | + 26'20" | 10 | | Benny Erbetta | CCC Team | + 27'08" | 11 | | Aurélien Paret-Peintre | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | + 27'30" | 12 | | Hugh Carthy | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | + 28'58" | 13 | | Rodrigo Contreras | BORA - hansgrohe | + 33'07" | 14 | | Börje Kratzert | Team Jumbo-Visma | + 33'57" | 15 | | Victor Lafay | Deceuninck - Quick Step | + 34'24" | 16 | | Silvio Herklotz | Israel Start Up Nation | + 34'36" | 17 | | Léo Vincent | INEOS Grenadiers | + 41'08" | 18 | | Maxime Le Lavandier | AG2R Citroën Team | + 43'48" | 19 | | Calvin Beneke | Team DSM | + 43'49" | 20 | | Jérémy Maison | Groupama - FDJ | + 43'51" |
Final points standings
Very few sprint finishes this year but the points jersey is for a sprinter anway. This jersey winner riding for Bahrain Victorious did manage to win a stage to top things of.
1 | | Niccolo Bonifazio | Bahrain Victorious | 130 pts. | 2 | | Ruben Guerreiro | RuralvÃa-CCU Pro Team | 115 pts. | 3 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | 108 pts. | 4 | | Moreno Moser | INEOS Grenadiers | 72 pts. | 5 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | 70 pts. |
Final mountain standings
Benny Erbetta definitely got his career going with this race. If not for Aru he could have won a second stage next to this jersey as well.
1 | | Benny Erbetta | CCC Team | 237 pts. | 2 | | Kenny Elissonde | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | 158 pts. | 3 | | Silvio Herklotz | Israel Start Up Nation | 143 pts. | 4 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | 142 pts. | 5 | | Leopold König | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | 139 pts. |
Final young standings
Quite the gaps here. Deserved for Dunbar, who was strong in the first week but held on well after all over the course of three weeks.
1 | | Eddie Dunbar | Team DSM | 87h08'15" | 2 | | Benny Erbetta | CCC Team | + 9'26" | 3 | | Aurélien Paret-Peintre | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | + 9'48" | 4 | | Börje Kratzert | Team Jumbo-Visma | + 16'15" | 5 | | Victor Lafay | Deceuninck - Quick Step | + 16'42" |

We don't want you to get complacent, so it's good Guerreiro didn't win. Four stages and second overall is a great result.

In the end it is, even if the gap shouldn't have been this large.
Only one Grand Tour left to podium at now! |

Time for some of the spring classics' riders to get back action. Barbero didn't have the best form coming here and it showed on all stages. He couldn't finish off a superb leadout on day one and couldn't launch properly the day after. Cimolai won both stages.
The hillier course of the third stage invited many to attack Cimolai's lead, but both Ochoa and Barbero overplayed their hand by attacking too early on. The latter couldn't follow the group from which young Dane Kim Milton Helveg secured the overall win and had to settle for GC 7th.

We have a habit of not doing well at this race and the 2021 edition was no exception. Chávarri and MartÃnez led our team but our sprinter saw Meseck take the first stage from the break while he came 8th. He did better on day two with a 6th place and then he didn't as he fractured his tibia and the stage didn't have anyone come in 6th.
We then came dead-last in the team time trial, forcing Eder to hit the mountains with a significant setback already. His post Giro legs eventually felt relatively good whereas our team lost several more riders due to illness. Our tiny Basque finished around 10th in every mountain stage and improved our best ever GC result here from 16th to 13th.
Fellow Spaniard Juan Andrés upset everyone with very strong performances on the climbs and topped off this week with two stage wins and two jerseys. Kelderman, winner of four Grand Tours and the usual favourite for the upcoming TDF, certainly has some work to do in the next few weeks.

Guerreiro rode his first race since the Giro to get some rhythm peaking in the upcoming TDF. When things mattered most, during the queen stage, he couldn't fight for the win after narrowly avoiding a crash. Jairo Noria pulled an overall podium out of the fire by coming third on the final stage, which was won from the breakaway.

13th is really the best ever result in the Dauphine? Erm, congrats, I guess?
Great result by Noria, though!

Thank you, I guess? Just a race that I usually really don't do well at, don't ask me why. Noria in some good shape to support Guerreiro at Le Tour though.

If we had a silent race at the Dauphiné, this Tour de Suisse was dead silent. The GC contenders' teams use literally every tougher stretch of the route to make this a very hard race, which translates in all but one stages getting a well-known winner. We never made the headlines because Colla couldn't outclimb home rider Gerardo Hänzi on the final day.
Simon Yates put quite some time into his rivals on the long time trial and could allow Alaphilippe to chew away at his lead on the final mountain stages. It's the perfect warm up result ahead of the Brit's shot at the TDF win.

Agree, but we couldn't do more than this given how hard this race was.
Only the NC left now before Le Tour! |
