Yeah, I shouldnt have posted, Bernal seems to be in control now.

Lovely performance by Almeida once again though. From the first attack to keeping up with Bernal now. And I continue to be impressed with Caruso, didn't think he had this in him.

Felt like I was watching the 2015 Tour, where Froome was struggling but a random Poels won him the race. Today, we had Castroviejo being the random INEOS that puts the required numbers. Bernal clearly was struggling, but he was just following the numbers on the power meter.
Great ride by Almeida again, but Yates deserved the victory. Won't be enough to win the Giro tomorrow, but you can't blame him for trying. |

Almeida top-5 is still possible if he can keep gaining time on Bardet (well, he will do a terrible time trial ) and Carthy. Martinez is decent against the clock too so let’s see, really depends on tomorrow’s stage and if he has to tow Bernal all the way to the finish.
By the way, Jumbo with 9-11-12 in the GC, these guys are consistent. |

Bernal looked more in control today than 2 days ago. I think today's time loss was assumed. Let's see what tomorrow brings. |

Bad day yes, but at this point its fair to say that Remco cost Almeida a shot at the podium?

Almeida was 4 minutes behind both Yates and Caruso even before Montalcino and lost just under 2 on that day, so I think that's a bit of an overstatement (if that's what you're referring to, maybe I'm forgetting something else). Although DQS's race was centered around Almeida's GC ambitions from the start, who knows. But I think that would have been a risk, too, looking at how it went last year. Not that betting on Remco wasn't a risk, either, to be sure.

Talking about stage 4 result where Almeida shipped 6 minutes to Dombro. I know it's unclear what caused the off day for Almeida but given the way he has been riding, I could well imagine it was more a mental thing rather than a physical issue, also because he aced the prologue so legs looked fine.
Perhaps he was a bit undercooked, or he underestimated it. In any case, the whole Remco theatre and Almeida's transfer drama ahead of the Giro (instigated by Lefevre) surely didn't help in getting him 100% to the Giro.

Whats up with his eyebrows btw?

I think Almeida did mention to the portuguese press after stage 4 that he forgot to feed himself - hence, why he didn't have the legs and lost time. Not sure if in that stage it was correct for Quickstep to leave him out there alone instead of having someone to help him, but he just didn't have the strength that day.
Now, of course, in the last two stages he pulled for Evenepoel - especially on the sterrato stage - it becomes a bit baffling after there, because it became obvious that Remco didn't have the legs post first-week to do anything about the GC.
But I don't think we can really blame the team's tactics on here, given the circunstances of the race. Though screw Lefevre for absolutelly blitzing Almeida to the press basically, while Remco didn't have the legs at 100% to fight for 3 weeks for a GT - this was his debut, after all. |

Many must have celebrated Remco's withdrawal. They were wishing he broke a leg (LOL) for two straight weeks. I just stopped reading the idiocy, now we got at least decent people celebrating and prasing Almeida's performance, at least.
The problem with stage 4 was the same with the crazy Tirreno stage Van der Poel won ahead of Pogacar. Bad weather and no feeding, like Miguel said. Thought he could have learnt something from there but well I guess that's why he's 23. However, he seems to have clearly set a target to be on top shape for the final week - João and Yates seem the strongest now - and maybe would still be short on the podium.
But I do agree, Lefevere just made a joke out of himself, and I'm not sure if he also ended up putting too much extra pressure on Evenepoel. |

I think Almeida is to blame here as well, announcing to the team you're leaving to get more money elsewhere the week before the Giro starts, that's not smart to say the least. There's a reason most transfers get announced in August, after le Tour.
Belgian management, Belgian teammates, Belgian sponsors and a big upcoming Belgian talent, they were going to demote Almeida to domestique at his first sign of weakness.

Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

The eating issue seems to me then that his off day could have been easily prevented if QS had paid more attention to him. Alas, he will have chances and QS will be fine without him.

Caruso 40 seconds up starting the last climb. Will be interesting to see what happens once Bernal loses his teammates. Hopefully Caruso can pull out the gap a bit more.

Right now it doesn`t look like the duo in front can go faster after the ~40km attack and after now losing their two team mates.
Bernal I think can go a bit faster and same for Yates etc. once Martinez goes off the lead. And so far the gap was always kept small around 40s. |

Yeah I think Yates needs to attack soon. Im sure 2nd and a stage win for Caruso would be nice enough though.

Hope Caruso can get the stage win. This would be a career defining race on perhaps the best chance he had, what a way to end his Zubeldia image. |

If Bardet would have some better legs and the duo could share the work a bit, they might have had a chance.
Right now it doesn`t look good for them and Caruso seems to be a bit annoyed by Bardet.
Yates will win the stage here I think. Looks easily strongest. |

Yates dropped, wow. Didn`t see this one coming.
Even more impressive how Almeida is jo-jo'back to Bernal again and again and now on top5 run. |
