OMG! How is that even possible? How often did you have to replay that stage to make me this incredible gift? They let Alunderis join the breakaway again even though he was 5th in the GC. And to attack again after he was caught, what a form he must have had! Maglia Rosa! In the footsteps of Navardauskas! Unbelievable!

We can end the season now.  I still can't quite believe it.
He should now lose enough time that he could even attack again in the third week, which was the original hope, but obviously he's done more than enough, he is free to take it easy from now on for the rest of the race - and the season - and just bask in the glory.

The team is definitely just going for breakaways in this Giro, which might just mean Virginijus will get another chance later. Though Knox will probably want to throw his hat in the ring, too.

Joining a breakaway on any of the remaining stages would be cool, that was the hope before the Giro started. But I cannot ask for any more gifts without sounding greedy.

I knew Knox would steal the breakaways from Alunderis, that 3rd place on stage 18 could have been mine!
What happened on stage 17, though? 10 riders broke away, but only two of them survived, but survived by 12 minutes. Did the rest crash?

Probably got lonely in the break and wanted the company of friends in the peloton again!

Since Virginijus Alunderis turned professional in 2017 he had a fairly anonymous career, but that all changed with the Giro 2020. Before the Giro, very few cycling fans even knew his name. He managed to join a breakaway in his very first professional race, but it became a rare occurance across the years. He made it into a breakaway on a flat stage in last year's Tour de France, which until now was the highlight of his career. But he was never able to show himself in his favourite terrain, the mountains.
When it was announced that the Oro y Paz 2020 would only be open to riders under the age of 25, he made this early race his top priority. By the climbing skills he showed in training he felt he could even make the top 10, but his body badly disappointed him on the first of two mountaintop finishes, he was only 30th. A better performance on the queen stage saw him rise to 20th overall, but the race still left him a bit disillusioned.
We also saw nothing of him in the Tour Down Under, the Tour of Western Europe and the Tour of the Basque Country – until he surprised in the final ITT, finishing 25th. His best single result of his career, against the clock, which he hates... that result renewed his confidence and determination.
Which brings us to the Giro d'Italia 2020. Virginijus vowed he'd finally catch the right breakaway. And the first tempting opportunity came early, stage 2's last climb was to his liking and a long descent to the finish line followed, the peloton might easily misjudge the situation. And the prediction came true and Alunderis was part of the 9-man breakaway. He was 5th out of 6 riders who held off the peloton by nearly 2 minutes. Asked afterwards if he could have won the stage: “A flat sprint? Never in a million years, I can't sprint to save my life. But honestly, I was spent anyway after that long day and the scary descent, man, these guys are crazy. It was a miracle I held on that long, I was just happy that I was dragged across the finish line.” 5th in the GC in the Giro was treasure enough.
But Virginijus wasn't quite done yet. Stage 4 with its two long climbs suited him perfectly, if he could make the breakaway again, maybe the peloton would underestimate him, he could even win the stage. He wasn't an unknown quantity, they could check his results so far and find them lacking, but then he'd never been in a breakaway before in such favourable terrain. Plus he felt he's never been in better shape.
And so he snuck into the breakaway again and despite his GC position he was allowed to get away. It was a group of decent climbers, especially Stetina, but Virginijus felt he could beat all of them today. He attacked his breakaway companions several times on the final climb and eventually dropped them, but sadly Anacona attacked from the peloton and Virginijus just couldn't follow him after he was caught.
He couldn't quite hold off the group of favourites, either, though he finished 5th again, in itself a fantastic result. But what made it that much more fantastic was the lead in the general classification, 40 seconds ahead of Anacona. He couldn't believe it when his servicemen celebrated, he had totally forgotten about the GC, he was still disappointed that he couldn't follow Anacona... but then he stepped onto the podium and received the maglia rosa and shed tears of joy and disbelief.
He held onto the jersey for four days. He lost 40 seconds on the hilly stage 6 and then the jersey in the tricky finale of stage 8. On a brutal MTF on stage 9 he had to show his true colours, he was 36th, in itself a fine result. “Oh, definitely, less than 5 minutes behind Geraint, that's another boost to my confidence.”
He was hoping for another chance to join a breakaway in the final week, but Knox became the preferred option. Virginijus never took it easy and considering the quality of riders he was up against reached respectable results on these tough stages. This was especially true on stage 20, where he finished in the group of favourites alongside overall winner Thomas. In the end he was 41st overall and 7th in the U25 ranking, clearly the best result of his career so far.
Asked about the maglia rosa he said: “It could well remain a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I won't ever become a good stage racer, I'll always be targeting stages and KOM jerseys. It's in my nature, physically and mentally. So I never expected to be wearning a GT leader jersey and am extremely grateful to have had the pleasure.”
