The sprinters had their chance yesterday, but today is a day for the climbers. The winner of this stage will also be the winner of the GC. Is Beltran able to repeat last year’s success and completing his team’s goal to finish in the top 5 today? Tenorio also has to finish in the top 5 to make his manager Mresuperstar and the sponsors happy, let’s see if he delivers.
10 kms in and a breakaway of five has formed; Cink, Kolesnikov, Gamper, Chaves and Salinas. Bettiol trying to close the gap and join them.
Oh no, Bettiol came very close, but did not manage to close that final gap. It seems he has to let the other five go.
Before they go up the mountain of first category, the riders have to get over one of fourth category three times today. Only the second ascent counts toward the KoM-ranking though. So far the five leaders have 1’10” over Bettiol and an additional 1’ on the peloton. A little bit less than 100 km to go!
With 80 km to go, the adventure of Bettiol is over. In the peloton we see riders of different teams working, including the sprinters Groenewegen and Hayakawa. The break is leading by 2’15”.
Kolesnikov starts the sprint for the KoM at the mountain of 4th category! Chaves should be the best at this kind of work, but he’s in last place of the leading group!
Close sprint! Cink takes the five points, ahead of Salinas and Gamper!
Two minutes later the peloton crosses the summit. Isostar – Specialized setting the pace now, with Peters and Per as domestiques.
They are being helped by the likes of Cherkasov and Freuler, working for Tenorio and Taaramäe. With 30 km to go the gap is around 30”.
Kolesnikov is having none of it and attacks moments before the peloton reels the breakaway back in! The Russian from Team Tinkoff – La Datcha is now on his last ascent of the mountain of fourth category, before taking on the final mountain where everything will be decided!
He doesn’t reach the 20km mark though, as Freuler closes the final gap. The favorites seem to be where they have to be, let the finale begin!
Never mind, one favorite is missing! Cattaneo is far from the peloton and has his whole team with him. No clue what is happening with the Italian, but he seems to have a very bad day! Hodeg and Fedeli are almost climbing better than he is and don’t understand what is happening!
The winner of last year, Beltran, has also lost touch with the peloton! He’s not the only favorite to go overboard, as Uran is also in this group!
The peloton begins its ascent of the final mountain with Kozhatayev, Eislers and Stüssi setting the pace.
At the back of the peloton we see Uran and Beltran again. Nevertheless, it seems impossible they would come back from this position. There are some other very interesting names in trouble as well; Schleck, Keizer and Martin!
With 7.5 km left to climb, we see the same teams at the front of the peloton. Hirt and former winner of this Tour Berhane moving up some positions.
Phinney attacks 5.5 km from the summit! Lopez and Hirt are the first to follow him!
Madrazo in trouble! He has to sit down and can’t answer the attack of his American rival! Olivier also not being able to follow the pace!
Meanwhile Hirt wasn’t able to follow the first two riders! Herklotz is now trying to close the gap before it is too late!
Quintana, Berhane and Padun tried to follow the best riders uphill but are now close to standing still, seems like they are no longer contending to win this race!
Lopez can’t follow Phinney anymore! He’s looking backwards now, the six riders between him and Quintana are Herklotz, Taaramäe, Hirt, Tenorio, Lecuisinier and Carthy!
As Phinney is increasing his lead, Lopez and Carthy are being dropped from the group of chasers! 3 km left to climb and less than 10 km until the finish!
The American with a very comfortable lead now! Surely this can’t go wrong! He reaches the summit with more than two minutes on his pursuers and will normally win the KoM-classification as well as the GC!
The chasing group crosses the summit 2’30” later, with Quintana, Lopez and Carthy another 1’30” later! Moments after a group of 20 crosses the top of the mountain, including the lost sons Beltran, Keizer and Martin.
With nobody else in sight, Phinney wins stage two, the GC and the KoM-classification of the Tour of East Java!
An eternity later, Herklotz wins the sprint for the second place against Tenorio, who makes his sponsors happy with a top-5. Lecuisinier, Hirt and Taaramäe finishing 4th to 6th.
Carthy gets a hold of the 7th place, with Quintana finishing just ahead of Lopez. Roglic manages to complete the Isostar party by finishing just ahead of Keizer and being 10th.
White jersey Wirtgen did an amazing job today and finishes in the same group as Padun and might keep his jersey if the jury decides this gap is not worth a time difference.
Phinney taking home two jerseys and a lot of points.
