Day 2 in Australia and another opportunity for the sprinters.
Yesterday Houle surprised the top sprinters by having most energy left towards the end by picking the best wheel as also 1-2 hills on the way which might have given him the advantage.
Guarnieri other than that looked strong as usual while Lo Cicero struggled towards the end and neither Vesely nor Gaviria really showed up at all, which today must change really for their teams!
6 riders in the breakaway:
Lawless
De Bod
Bagioli
Kluge
Mostov
Marchewka
While Kluge surely being the strongest on paper being a decent roleur, who despite being 34 years already, is still doing strong on the flat and in sprints from smaller groups, Mostov might be the most interesting one as the McCormick rider was already active yesterday sitting in 14th GC. No KoM points today, so he won`t be able to gain anything on Wirtgen in that category.
The peloton never really allowed a lot today and often it was less than 2min on a very fast day in the saddle.
With 27km to the finish, all riders are caught again, surprisingly early but either the sprinter teams planned to do the catch before the last sprint or they wanted to avoid another late sprint preperation.
Nelson being the fastest at the sprint just a bit later ahead of Gaviria, who at least showing up at this point here.
Meanwhile bad luck for Guarnieri or better his leadout Van der Haar, who punctured at the same time and might be missed in the sprint preperation, clearly being one of the 1-2 most important riders for the Italian.
Once again MOL being the most active team in the final and having 3 riders ahead of Lo Cicero in Bille, Pons and Martinez.
From the sprinters Vesely is missing again in a top position and Mohs is another who seems to struggle. Gaviria though is in the front rows today!
Pons Lo Cicero Van der Sande Gaviria Nelson Silvestre Martinez Drapac Ulissi Guarnieri Lay Bouhanni Kump Yates Houle Wippert Ackermann
Obviously not ideal to having lost Martinez as last leadout, who is sitting 2-3 spots behind Lo Cicero.
The MOL leadout had to sprint past the others to go ahead of Lo Cicero again surely costing him some energy, which might miss later on.
Though with 1,1km to go Lo Cicero at least still having 2 riders ahead. Pace though might need to be higher as neither of his two leadouts can go super fast and gap in between them and Lo Cicero could be too high.
Behind them Gaviria/ Van der Sande, Nelson, Silvestre all basically waiting to accelerate while yesterdays winner Houle is a bit blocked towards the end of the sprinters and most likely won`t be able to surprise another time.
600m to go and Lo Cicero in the lead!
Van der Sande getting the perfect leadout by him this way and also Nelson and Gaviria are still able to use the slipstream for a bit longer.
Then already a bit of a gap to Silvestre in the win and Yates, Guarnieri, Kump. They might still get some important bonus seconds today.
200m and Lo Cicero still going strong. Half a bike length to the Belgium Van der Sane, another half to Nelson and Gaviria, who are in the wind as well.
As you can see, the sprint was exactly those 200m too long for the MOL sprinter. He was passed by all three of them towards the end, when all were able to get some additional pace when he clearly lost it.
Having the slipstream the longest, Van der Sande takes a big win for Farfetch today. 2nd for Gaviria, which is a lot better than yesterday and giving some hope for some more big results this race and season.
Nelson as 3rd also with a good showing today.
In fact both Silvestre and Guarnieri did pass Lo Cicero as well for 4th and 5th, while Yates, Kump, Ulissi and Borges complete the top10 as puncheurs and grabbing some small bonus seconds.
Houle and Bouhanni struggled today in the final while Vesely is clearly the big disappointment so far in the sprints.
