One-day race
Swisslion came into the race with two outside favourites in Lahcen Saber and Kris Boeckmans, supported by 6 talented flat riders. No representation in the breakaway as the sole goal was to keep Lahcen and Kris in a good position heading into the final kilometres. The 6 man breakaway were eventually caught and with 4 km to go it was time for Swisslion to make their move.
Lahcen Saber launched a daring attack and blew by the ongoing sprint trains. Forcing the other teams to burn their matches, he was eventually brought back. The peloton was splintered by then as the riders scrambled to get themselves organised heading into the final 2 kilometres. A mistimed kick from Nelson for Ewan started off the final sprint. Others fought for Ewan's wheel, but the Aussie shot his bullet to early. Guarnieri and a well hidden Boeckmans came to the front, before a well timed effort from Itami caught both. Guarnieri just held on for the win in front of Itami and Boeckmans. A podium finish for the Belgian on his debut!
Behind Saber managed to recover enough to follow the wheels and finish in a respectable 11th place. It was his daring attack that foiled the plans of many teams and allowed Kris Boeckmans to smartly follow the wheels before eventually sprinting to 3rd. All the other Swisslion riders finished on the same time as the winner. All in all a great start to the season!
Boeckmans: I'm really happy with this result and the way we executed our plan. Obviously it would be even better, if Lahcen was able to hold on till the finish, but we came away with two good results.
Saber: The peloton were well alert when I attacked so I was brought back. I had good legs and I have no regrets with my performance. Maybe if I stayed back I could have gotten a better result, but with Kris finishing 3rd it all worked out in the end.
Race goals:
Top 10 | Success | Kris Boeckmans | 3rd | Top 10 | Failure | Lahcen Saber | 11th |
Race score: 8/10

Great start for you - and nice team tactics, showing that even a line-up with two sprinters sometimes works pretty well
As you said, Saber's move definitely caught some sprinters by surprise, reducing the competition for Boeckmans. Well done

I think it definitely can work with the right combination of sprinters and they will have the chance to show off their teamwork in a few more one day races

Thanks
I hope he only attacks in the other sprinters classics when he has Boeckmans behind him. Otherwise he's better off waiting for the sprint.

No surprise there. Lets hope that we can beat the elite climbers like Beltran has done last year so that both of us can leave the race satisfied

Isn't sending Beltran to C1 races kind of cheating?
I'm actually looking forward to see if Moscon can challenge him - probably not on such a difficult course, but you never know

Beltran not winning a C1 race is closer to cheating

That was a terrible performance by Beltran, and definitely not what you hoped for. I feel positive about him showing himself later in the season and proving he's still worth around 30% of your salary cap though (Don't use my words against me if he doesn't show up at all )

I wish I could share your positive outlook.

Close call and surely not too big of a shame, considering (and I've been saying this all over) the strong competition in New Zealand. He definetely had better legs than in the East Java Tour. If he keeps his formgrowth up like this, that podium will come sooner rather than later.
