The Tour Down Under 2020 starts with a sprinter stage or at least on paper. The start is rather uphill, which could lead to a tough start for pure sprinters in case the breakaway finding takes some time and also not far from the finish a Cat.2 rated hill awaits the peloton. Clearly an opportunity for a late attack, either by a GC rider or by one of the big engines. Though, some of the biggest have a sprinter here such as Vanbilsen/Biermans ( Gaviria), Veyhe/Van der Haar ( Guarnieri). They surely are going to try to keep everything together.
Next to the two mentioned Lo Cicero obviously deserves a mention for being the fastest in a pure sprint as also Kump, Vesely, Nelson or Silvestre as next on the list.
5 riders in todays break and something to talk about as well!
Wirtgen and Mostov are both riding for McCormick Pro Cycling, a team founded last year and in fact having started last season with a big bang as their former main sprinter Holloway immediately proved to be one of the very best and almost dominated against PCT sprinters not only winning two stages and the points competition but also the final GC in the end as CT team.
Still being an outsider here as CT team, they had to come back to Australia around their new main sprinter Keough, who also had a great 2018 but is not as strong as Holloway clearly, who has earned himself a PT contract for the actual season.
Scott being another rider to mention as he is one of just 5 home riders here and clearly has this bit of extra motivation!
The other two are Verona and Grashev. None of those 4 teams really having a top5 sprinter here.
The first of two sprints is won by Scott ahead of Verona and Mostov. Likely none of them later on is going to be high in the points ranking and neither in the GC but the way how bonus seconds have worked here in the Tour Down Under, you should always try to get as many as possible.
Some of the expected teams are chasing behind.
Lierse for Gaviria, Minions for Vesely, MOL for Lo Cicero. Also Aramco (Ulissi), Bakkaforst (Guarnieri) or Farfetch are showing up here and there.
The gap never really passed the 2-3min mark and so a sprint finish is expected.
After Scott has also decided the 2nd sprint of the day he is having the chance to be high up in the GC after day 1.
With the late hill coming though, the gap is pretty small only as the peloton is going fast. 4.6km on average 5% show that this hill isn`t that easy.
Bad luck for Alaphilippe. One of those punchy sprinters, despite neither the fastest nor strongest uphill. But having a badly timed puncture on the way up is never ideal. With 20km to go it`s unlikely he can make it back.
Nelson/Keukeleire the sprinter dup anyway and GC wise he might have been the best shot but not a big favourite.
The break still made it to the top and all but Scott also made it in front of the peloton!
In the end it was a decision between Grashev and Wirtgen and being on the shorter way to the line around the corner, McCormick once again showing up in the Tour Down Under by taking the first KoM of the season! At least for 1-2 days that is.
In especially Fedeli and Covi for Lierse kept the pace high and so with 5km to go, the break is caught.
Due to a rather slowish pace on the last parts of the climb and the top to get organized again and seeing if their sprinter is still decently placed, the gap to these four took a bit longer to close.
Mol being the main team with some kind of organized sprint after such late catch.
Pons Martinez Van der Haar Lo Cicero Silvestre Bouhanni Houle Kump Ulissi Drapac Guarnieri Lay Van der Sande Yates Wippert Nelson5-6 gaps Ackermann Colbrelli Gaviria5-6 gaps Vesely
In especially Gaviria and Vesely not ideally placed after the Lierse work most recently. Surely need to find the way to the front fast!
1,7km to go and Pons basically has done his job.
Martinez now being in front of Lo Cicero as last leadout.
Silvestre and Bouhanni still right behind him with a long line:
Houle, Kump, Drapac, Guarnieri, Nelson, Wippert, Van der Sande all in the mix as well.
Not looking bright for Gaviria or Vesely.
Late under the 1km banner Bakkafrost kind of found themselves. Perera in the lead after being on the left having passed over to the right ahead of Guarnieri as last bit of support.
On the other side Silvestre having passed the not that strong leadout by Martinez, which sees Lo Cicero struggling to keep the pace up.
Bouhanni, Houle and Kump all about to pass the Italian as well with Drapac not far behind neither.
One of those top7 will surely win as riders such as Nelson, Lay, Van der Sande or Wippert in the rows behind won`t make it that far up in just 500m.
Guarnieri on the far right now going past his leadout. Lo Cicero on the far left also trying to accelerate.
Bouhanni attacking Silvestre through the middle while Kump, Houle and Drapac having a high pace in the slipstream.
It`s definitely a close decision between Houle and Guarnieri. The Xero sprinter came past Bouhanni on the final meters while Guarnieri had the longest sprint but also the biggest engine to do so.
All others, Kump, Silvestre, Lo Cicero couldn`t challenge them enough while Lay and co came too late from behind.
Hard to say really but race officials quickly decided that Houle is todays winner and this is not only a great stage result but also a bold move for the GC as he is more one of the punchy sprinters!
Guarnieri 2nd ahead of Bouhanni with a strong 3rd for CT team Strava.
Kump in 4th also getting important bonus seconds here in the GC fight against stronger puncheurs while Silvestre, Lay, Lo Cicero and Nelson are following.
Surely a day to forget for Lierse and also Minions with their main sprinters not showing up and something to improve starting tomorrow!
