Another hilly classic. 2nd one out of those 4 in Spain in the early part of the year. Much harder than a first one.
My goal for today is finishing in the top 15 which seems highly possible. With 20 kms to the finish, the main group isn't that big. Breakaway is still up front.
10 kms to the finish. Many attacks already happened, but no one was able to escape.
5 km - only 1 rider in front of the main group.
V. Madouas is looking good to grab a win right here!
He was caught right on the line! He was probably out of any energy. I finished right outside of the podium - 4th.

3rd classic in Spain in three days. More hills but this time those climbs are much longer. I'm one of the outsiders here so my goal here is to finish in the top 5.
We start Coll de Puig Maior. Pace is really fast.
I decided to setup a strong tempo on that climb and on the top of it I had 1'13" lead over the peloton!
I'm seriously going to win this! No one is really chasing and after completing the downhill I still have a massive lead over the peloton - 1'42".
They are chasing! Few riders decided to attack but with 4 kms to go I still have 1'00" lead.
What a fantastic win! I decided to attack and what a solo ride it was!

Last classic in Spain. Probably the easiest from all 4, but still it might end with a finish from smaller peloton.
With 7 kms to go I decided to attack. The peloton was riding slow, so it was a great chance to escape.
Not many riders decided to follow - 3.4 km.
I was caught by that group of riders and they outsprinted me at the finish. 6th place is very good. Especially when you know you have to finish in the top 50.

More wild card invitations! I'm really happy I can try to ride in first 3 monuments of the season!
Tour of Oman is my first stage race this season. We start this race with a stage for sprinters.
Like I thought - full peloton was fighting for the stage win.
Top 15:
1 | Edward Theuns | Elkov - Author | 3h47'40 | 2 | Szymon Sajnok | EF Education First | s.t. | 3 | Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | s.t. | 4 | Ivan Garcia Cortina | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 5 | Luka Mezgec | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 6 | Ryan Gibbons | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 7 | Zdenek Stybar | UAE Team Emirates | s.t. | 8 | Herman Dahl | Israel Cycling Academy | s.t. | 9 | Matteo Trentin | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 10 | Claudio Rusconi | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 11 | Simon Yates | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 12 | Xandro Meurisse | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | s.t. | 13 | Omar Fraile | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 14 | Daniel Felipe Martinez | EF Education First | s.t. | 15 | Elie Gesbert | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. |
Even though it's considered as a flat stage, it can ends by an attack on those climbs close from the finish.
We are on that short climb really close from the finish - 5.5 km.
Am I going to win this?
Barely but yes! Again I used the terrain to grab a victory. What a start of this year.

The only mountain stage in this race. A lot of flat terrain and then one big climb.
The beginning of the Great Mountain - 7.1 km, the average of 9.9%. Max. 12,9%.
Final km! Not many riders are going to fight for the victory.
Mitchelton - SCOTT had so many riders in the front group it's a shame they couldn't grab a win right here. I saved the most energy from the other riders and I won again!
Top 15:

Even though this stage have few climbs in the 2nd half of this stage, I don't think the difference will be that big. Probably a finish from a small group. I'm currently a leader of GC.
Really high pace on those climbs - 30 kms to go.
17.5 km to the finish.
D. F. Martinez with an attack!
Now S. Yates and M. Padun.
5 km - together with S. Oomen we catch the first three riders.
S. Yates now played that finish perfectly. He attacked with 3 kms left and he gained enough gap to grab a stage win.
Top 15:
1 | Simon Yates | Mitchelton - SCOTT | 3h53'44 | 2 | Daniel Felipe Martinez | EF Education First | s.t. | 3 | Mark Padun | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 4 | Claudio Rusconi | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 5 | Sam Oomen | Team Sunweb | + 23 | 6 | Xandro Meurisse | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | + 1'13 | 7 | Michal Schlegel | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 8 | Søren Kragh Andersen | UAE Team Emirates | s.t. | 9 | Matteo Trentin | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 10 | Omar Fraile | Mitchelton - SCOTT | + 2'09 | 11 | Giulio Ciccone | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 12 | Carrel Hilmes | Guerciotti - Kiwi Atlántico | + 2'57 | 13 | Oleksandr Prevar | Guerciotti - Kiwi Atlántico | s.t. | 14 | Kyle Murphy | Benediction Excel Energy | s.t. | 15 | Hubert Lansheere | Corendon - Circus | s.t. |
Last stage of this race. S. Yates is only +3" behind me in GC but I don't think he can gain that time. If nothing bad happens... I'll win this race.
That was really close to actually lose the race! S. Yates was in the position to grab a win here, but he wasn't fast enough. Thankfully main bonus seconds has been taken by the breakaway riders.
Top 15:
1 | Ludwig De Winter | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | 3h21'50 | 2 | Martijn Tusveld | Team Sunweb | s.t. | 3 | Matteo Trentin | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 4 | Ivan Garcia Cortina | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 5 | Rudy Molard | Elkov - Author | s.t. | 6 | Omar Fraile | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 7 | Daniel Felipe Martinez | EF Education First | s.t. | 8 | Simon Yates | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 9 | Zdenek Stybar | UAE Team Emirates | s.t. | 10 | Luka Mezgec | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. | 11 | Mark Padun | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 12 | Claudio Rusconi | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 13 | Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | s.t. | 14 | Søren Kragh Andersen | UAE Team Emirates | s.t. | 15 | Sam Oomen | Team Sunweb | s.t. |
Brilliant race in Oman. I won every single individual classification! And I have to add to that list 2 stage wins!
Final general classification:
1 | Claudio Rusconi | Team Arkéa - Samsic | 22h49'48 | 2 | Simon Yates | Mitchelton - SCOTT | + 3 | 3 | Daniel Felipe Martinez | EF Education First | + 44 | 4 | Mark Padun | Bahrain - Merida | + 1'38 | 5 | Sam Oomen | Team Sunweb | + 2'07 | 6 | Giulio Ciccone | Mitchelton - SCOTT | + 2'25 | 7 | Xandro Meurisse | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | + 2'43 | 8 | Omar Fraile | Mitchelton - SCOTT | + 2'56 | 9 | Michal Schlegel | Team Dimension Data | + 2'57 | 10 | Matteo Trentin | Team Arkéa - Samsic | + 3'09 | 11 | Søren Kragh Andersen | UAE Team Emirates | + 3'17 | 12 | Ivan Garcia Cortina | Bahrain - Merida | + 6'08 | 13 | Rudy Molard | Elkov - Author | + 6'18 | 14 | Alessandro De Marchi | UAE Team Emirates | + 6'36 | 15 | Elie Gesbert | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. |

I can proudly announce that I'll be a part of even more WT classics this year! More wild cards to our team!
There is no break! Right after Oman I had a quick transfer to France for this 3 stages of Tour du Haut Var. All three stages are hilly. First one have an uphill finish too.
We are on the top of the final short categorized climb for today - 15.6 km.
10 kms to go. My team-mate A. Perez is doing a work for the final sprint.
Great sprint finish by O.C. Eiking. I started a bit to early and I wasn't able to fight for a victory.
Top 15:
1 | Odd Christian Eiking | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | 4h05'21 | 2 | Mathieu Van Der Poel | Corendon - Circus | s.t. | 3 | Richard Carapaz | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 4 | Xandro Meurisse | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | s.t. | 5 | Lilian Calmejane | Team Total Direct Energie | s.t. | 6 | Claudio Rusconi | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 7 | Nans Peters | Movistar Team | s.t. | 8 | Danny Weinzierl | BORA - hansgrohe | + 15 | 9 | Jan Polanc | UAE Team Emirates | s.t. | 10 | Romain Bardet | AG2R La Mondiale | + 32 | 11 | Frédéric Jouan | Vital Concept - B&B Hotels | + 1'09 | 12 | Warren Barguil | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 13 | Mark Padun | Bahrain - Merida | + 1'26 | 14 | François Bidard | AG2R La Mondiale | + 1'43 | 15 | Cameron Bayly | EvoPro Racing | + 1'56 |

More than 200 kms in a hilly terrain. In this race we have many great puncheurs. First stage showed that!
We start the final climb for today. Short, but steep. W. Barguil did an awesome job. We both escaped a bit from the peloton and caught the breakaway on the bottom of that climb. 16 kms to the finish.
Attacks by Carapaz, Bardet and GC leader Eiking!
All the favourites are back together.
Brilliant sprint by Van Der Poel to win 2nd stage! I finished on very good 3rd place.
Top 15:
1 | Mathieu Van Der Poel | Corendon - Circus | 5h34'33 | 2 | Odd Christian Eiking | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | s.t. | 3 | Claudio Rusconi | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 4 | Mark Padun | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 5 | Romain Bardet | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | 6 | Jan Polanc | UAE Team Emirates | s.t. | 7 | Xandro Meurisse | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | s.t. | 8 | Richard Carapaz | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 9 | Lilian Calmejane | Team Total Direct Energie | s.t. | 10 | Nans Peters | Movistar Team | s.t. | 11 | Bryan Coquard | Vital Concept - B&B Hotels | + 2'17 | 12 | Anthony Perez | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 13 | Danny Weinzierl | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 14 | Gino Mäder | Team INEOS | s.t. | 15 | Ben Hermans | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | s.t. |
The final stage is pretty short but have the profile I like the most. Summit finish! It's still categorized as a hilly, but I prefer those types of hills exactly.
Mont Faron is a short but really hard climb. We are on the bottom of it.
16% currently! And we still have 3 kms to the finish.
Red banner! Can I win on that climb and outsprint Carapaz and Van Der Poel?
Van Der Poel was completely empty and Carapaz was fighting until the very last moment. I saved just a bit more energy.
Top 15:
1 | Claudio Rusconi | Team Arkéa - Samsic | 3h25'29 | 2 | Richard Carapaz | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 3 | Mathieu Van Der Poel | Corendon - Circus | + 29 | 4 | Romain Bardet | AG2R La Mondiale | + 42 | 5 | Xandro Meurisse | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | + 2'09 | 6 | Lilian Calmejane | Team Total Direct Energie | s.t. | 7 | Jan Polanc | UAE Team Emirates | s.t. | 8 | Odd Christian Eiking | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | + 2'27 | 9 | Warren Barguil | Team Arkéa - Samsic | + 2'43 | 10 | Nans Peters | Movistar Team | + 2'58 | 11 | Mark Padun | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 12 | Danny Weinzierl | BORA - hansgrohe | + 3'20 | 13 | Delio Fernández | Delko Marseille Provence | s.t. | 14 | Joshua Edmondson | Team INEOS | s.t. | 15 | Romain Sicard | Team Total Direct Energie | s.t. |
Three quick stages in France gave me yet another stage win and final GC victory. That's a good thing before my WT campaign that starts just in the next update.
Final general classification:
1 | Claudio Rusconi | Team Arkéa - Samsic | 13h05'09 | 2 | Richard Carapaz | Bahrain - Merida | + 4 | 3 | Mathieu Van Der Poel | Corendon - Circus | + 23 | 4 | Romain Bardet | AG2R La Mondiale | + 1'28 | 5 | Xandro Meurisse | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | + 2'23 | 6 | Lilian Calmejane | Team Total Direct Energie | s.t. | 7 | Odd Christian Eiking | Wanty - Gobert Cycling Team | + 2'25 | 8 | Jan Polanc | UAE Team Emirates | + 2'38 | 9 | Nans Peters | Movistar Team | + 3'12 | 10 | Mark Padun | Bahrain - Merida | + 4'38 | 11 | Danny Weinzierl | BORA - hansgrohe | + 6'06 | 12 | Warren Barguil | Team Arkéa - Samsic | + 6'23 | 13 | Frédéric Jouan | Vital Concept - B&B Hotels | + 8'47 | 14 | François Bidard | AG2R La Mondiale | + 9'21 | 15 | Joshua Edmondson | Team INEOS | + 10'06 |

More wild card decisions. This time it's 50/50. First wild card declined - for Liege-Bastogne-Liege. But I'll have a chance to see Mur de Huy at least!
My first WT race this season and it's Paris-Nice! We open this race with a flat stage with an uphill finish.
Bora did one hell of a job with a train for Ackermann. He and three other sprinters completely run away from the peloton on the final sprint. I finished first "from the peloton".
Top 15:
1 | Peter Sagan | CCC Pro Team | 3h35'18 | 2 | Caleb Ewan | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 3 | Pascal Ackermann | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 4 | Alvaro José Hodeg | Deceuninck - Quick-Step | s.t. | 5 | Claudio Rusconi | Team Arkéa - Samsic | + 20 | 6 | Geraint Thomas | Team INEOS | s.t. | 7 | Benoît Cosnefroy | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | 8 | Matteo Trentin | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 9 | Marc Sarreau | Groupama - FDJ | s.t. | 10 | Thibaut Pinot | Groupama - FDJ | s.t. | 11 | Miguel Angel Lopez | Team Jumbo - Visma | s.t. | 12 | Romain Bardet | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | 13 | Mikel Landa | EF Education First | s.t. | 14 | Owain Doull | Team INEOS | s.t. | 15 | Sergio Andres Higuita | Mitchelton - SCOTT | s.t. |

Yet another stage for sprinters. This time I tried to follow P. Ackermann wheel. It was a good choice, but like I mentioned in the previous stage... I'm too slow.

An interesting ITT. Flat first 12 kms then last 3 kms are going up. I struggle on flat ITTs but I hope that short climb can make me lose a bit less time.
Here we go!
1st intermediate check.
Finish! It was a decent try. I needed to save energy for that final 3 kms because that was the most important part. I finished in the top 30 which is nice.

Last flat stage in this race. Who can grab a win from the sprinters?
Much better sprint by me. I was better positioned so I finished 5th.

First out of three stages that will decide how GC will look like.
We are on the top of the Col de Bourigaille - 47 km to go.
Second attempt on Col de Bourigaille. This time from the other side.
Not many riders with me at the top - 19 km to go.
5 km - Landa, Thomas and Roglic in front of me. FDJ duo of Pinot and Gaudu right behind.
G. Thomas is out.
Last km!
What a fantastic win! Roglic and Landa were out right before me and Pinot started to sprint. I barely beat him. Barely.

The only mountain stage in this race.
Col Saint Martin - 17 km with the average of 5.3%. But the first half is much easier than the second.
I actually escaped from the main favourites. I caught one of the first breakaway riders.
It's all back together.
Col de la Couillole - 16 km with the average of 7.5%.
W. Barguil did an awesome job. He was working for the first 10 km of this climb. Now I go alone.
1 km to the finish! It's between me, T. Pinot and G. Thomas!
I beat T. Pinot again on the very last moment. Two in a row! The Frenchman is still leader of the GC.
Top 15:
1 | Claudio Rusconi | Team Arkéa - Samsic | 5h16'29 | 2 | Thibaut Pinot | Groupama - FDJ | s.t. | 3 | Geraint Thomas | Team INEOS | + 40 | 4 | Primoz Roglic | BORA - hansgrohe | + 1'17 | 5 | Steven Kruijswijk | Team Jumbo - Visma | + 1'47 | 6 | David Gaudu | Groupama - FDJ | s.t. | 7 | Mikel Landa | EF Education First | + 2'13 | 8 | Miguel Angel Lopez | Team Jumbo - Visma | + 2'31 | 9 | Sergio Andres Higuita | Mitchelton - SCOTT | + 3'19 | 10 | Julian Alaphilippe | Deceuninck - Quick-Step | + 3'50 | 11 | Warren Barguil | Team Arkéa - Samsic | + 4'24 | 12 | Jakob Fuglsang | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 13 | Fabio Aru | UAE Team Emirates | + 5'26 | 14 | Damiano Caruso | Bahrain - Merida | s.t. | 15 | Jan Polanc | UAE Team Emirates | + 6'09 |
Short hilly stage to end this race. I don't think I can gain one minute over Pinot here.
We start the final climb for today - Col d'Eze.
10 km to go. M. Trentin working at the front.
3 km to the finish. Trentin is managing the tempo for me.
M. Trentin did a very good job. I finished right outside of the podium.

If you thought I'll only ride in the races with hills and/or mountains... I've got a bad news for you. Or good news. It's time for cobbles season! Yes! I think I improved in this category so I want to try myself against the best cobble specialists in the world.
I was just about to say those cobbles weren't enough to create a gaps in the peloton and it will ends via mass sprint. Wrong 7 km to go and that happened. Some attacks and splits. Thankfully I have M. Haller with me to help.
4 km to go. Haller is smashing this!
I thought I can't win this by a sprint but last 600m on the cobbles made it easier. I never thought I'll ever win a cobble classic. But I won!

My first ever Monument! Can I survive those 303 km?
Still 200 km to the finish.
101 km to go. That's a long race.
54 km to the finish. I'm feeling good so far.
Cipressa - 38 km.
27 km - Pompeiana.
We start the Poggio. Barely 27 riders in the front group!
Screw it. I'm attacking!
Very interesting situation. Together with J. Stuyven we have 32" lead.
3.5 km! 35" lead. Who can win it?
I'm speechless. I'm absolutely speechless. J. Stuyven was the only one who followed my attack and on final few km I was following his wheel. I knew I can't beat him in a sprint if I had to ride and start it first. Luckily he was working with me and I sat on his wheel for final sprint. He started that early and I thought I can't do it. But then a miracle happened! I won my very first monument in my life!

First monument, great win! Looks like great tactics. MSR is a strange one, as the peloton doesn't take the climbs hard enough usually (but did here), but also dont really set up sprint trains either.

Thanks! Glad to see someone is still following this story, lol
And yeah, most one day classics are a weird to run. If whole peleton is going it's hard from AI to prepare sprint trains. On the other hand I was also surprised to see that kind of selection in Milano-Sanremo.
I comeback here after my victory last year. I'm the defending winner and I'll do my best to win it again. Especially after my Milano - Sanremo victory.
We are 20 km from the finish. Both C. Russo and M. Haller are working at the front. I'm just right behind them.
8 km - attacks from three riders.
Back-to-back victories in this classic! What an amazing times!

A bit of offtop. Since the last few races went too easy - from that point my difficulty got increased to EXTREME. We'll see.
More WT classics. A bit of cobbles but not much. Flat, so probably a mass sprint or solo victory.
I'm first to start a sprint!
Pure sprinters easily overtook me in that sprint. But I'm satisfied with that 5th place.

This classic is very similar to that previous one. Also flat, also with a bit of cobbles. The difference is that we have more hills that might be a factor today.
I'm not really fighting for a decent result today. My job is to work at the front of the peloton.
Paterberg.
Now Oude-Kwaremont. As you can see I'm a bit behind. Currently in 3rd group.
It's all back together - 29 km.
That pace was too high for me in this classic.

Last claasic in March, but it isn't last in a very long time. I can say we aren't even in the middle of an early season campaign. It's Gent-Wevelgem!
Those hills are a complete nightmare. Now the "easiest" part.
10 km to go. Really high tempo and a lot of attacks.
I was feeling good for that sprint but against those really fast sprinters it's hard achievement to beat them.

We are in the middle of one day classics rampage. WT flat classic with a bit of cobbles. Surprisingly I'm one of the favourites. I won so many mountain stages and I'm a favourite of cobble classic. Exciting!
126 km - Flat easy terrain is now over.
80 km - The Carnage is real. Only 28 riders in the front group. I still have a couple of team-mates with me.
That is the first time we go through a finish line. My team-mates are almost empty. Not looking good.
28 kms to go. A lot of splits in the front group. I'm sadly alone now.
Front group is still with 1'26" lead. No one wants to work so I have to chase and manage my energy well.
5 kms to go. 7 more riders with me - 3 in the front - 26" lead.
It's all back together - 2 kms to the finish!
I still had some energy in me because of that downhill finish. But my speed just wasn't there. I was beaten by the faster riders. 3rd place is still a good result.

A bit of the break between cobbles. Hilly classic won last year by me! Can I repeat that this year?
28 km - Front group is much slower because of my pace on the previous climb.
15 km - We are in the decisive moment of this classic. Three short climbs to go.
This is what will be fighting for the victory on final climb. Can I do two in a row?
Sadly, no. I started a bit too early and I was out of energy right before the finish. I can be satisfied but it should have ended better for me.

Tour of Flanders! What more can I add?
Flat terrain is almost over. Now to the more interesting part!
There is still a lot of to do, but this is Muur - Kapelmuur - 94 kms to go.
The early breakaway is now caught - 69 km.
Oude-Kwaremont - 55 km. As you can see I'm a bit behind.
This is isn't looking good for me. A lot of riders escaped on that 2nd attempt on Oude-Kwaremont. I'm riding alone with still 38 kms to go.
18.5 km - 3rd and last attempt on Oude-Kwaremont.
And Paterberg of course!
8 km - I'm now just riding to the finish. Can't catch anyone and no one is able to catch me.
It's finally over! What a hell of a ride that was. I maybe could end this a bit higher. I was too much behind on that Oude-Kwaremont where many riders completely went away from me. I needed to manage my energy well so I wasn't able to catch them. I finished 15th.

Right before my 3rd monument of the year, we have a flat classic with a bit of cobbles - Scheldeprijs.
Those cobbles aren't the most difficult part of this race...
...even that they actually split the peloton on the last ride through it.
I still finished inside top 10, but that wasn't my best sprint.
