Off-season holiday reports Chapter 2: Andrónico Mendigain: Angel Cerezo and me had spoken about paying a visit to the African continent. As we both only recently moved from our home country, we thought a Spanish speaking country would be a good choice. We are not that fluent in English yet.
In the end only one country turned to have Spanish as an official language: the former Spanish colony nowadays known as Equatorial Guinea. The country's capital was quite nice actually. There are some historical buildings including this cathedral of Santa Isabel, that sadly got damaged in a recent fire. The urban national park covering 500,000 m² was definitely a nice setting for our only biking time during this trip. Angel Cerezo: on the southern part of the Bioko island, some truly picturesque shampoo commercial waterfalls feature in Caldera de San Carlos nature reserve. Sadly I could not convince Andrónico to stay much longer than two days.
Despite being born in a country renowned for its rainforests, he is not too fond of local wildlife wherever it contains many spider and snake species. He couldn't get on a plane out of there fast enough.
See you soon, fans!

Looking forward to the new season Also an interesting contract year ahead. I suppose Chavarri is going to want a significant raise, but guys like Ion, Ochoa and Barbero also up for renewal ...

Thank you both, looking forward with you. For the first time in years, many key riders have an expiring contract. Add Cerezo and Cortes, who are vital in the cobbles lineup, to the list of the ones you already mentioned... |

Santos Tour Down Under (2.UWT)
Stage 1 | 154 kms
The first World Tour stage of the year ended with the expected bunch sprint. Our train worked quite well but Barbero got boxed in near the barriers. Local hero Caleb Ewan sprinted to the ochre leader jersey as he beat Peter Sagan. Barbero and Verona came 11th and 12th as they saw a time gap be awarded just behind them.

Stage 2 | 159 kms
The pack failed to chase hard enough on the slightly undulated second half of stage 2. Astana's Vladislav Filipovich won the stage from the break, Scott Thwaites got the leaders jersey as a consolation prize.
1 | | Vladislav Filipovich | Astana Pro Team | 3h27'21" | 2 | | Scott Thwaites | Team INEOS | s.t. | 3 | | Dylan van Baarle | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 4 | | Gytis Veikutis | UAE-Team Emirates | s.t. | 5 | | Axel Domont | Groupama - FDJ | s.t. | | ---------- | | | | 13 | | Carlos Barbero | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 38" |
Stage 3 | 177 kms
A very rare sight on stage 3: a TDU mountain stage. Three of our men showed great legs on the flanks of Mount Kosciuszko, the highest mountain on the Australian mainland. Wellens won the final sprint of a not so thinned bunch, with Sagan taking the overall lead.
After this stage, we had riders in GC 2nd, 4th and 8th.
1 | | Tim Wellens | Lotto Soudal | 4h20'32" | 2 | | Davide Villella | Team INEOS | s.t. | 3 | | Rohan Dennis | Mitchelton-Scott | s.t. | 4 | | Peter Sagan | Bahrain - McLaren | s.t. | 5 | | Cameron Meyer | Mitchelton-Scott | s.t. | | ---------- | | | | 12 | | Carlos Barbero | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 4 | 184 kms
Stage 4 already and once more we finished on the verge of the top 10. This time Cortes was our top finisher in 11th place.
1 | | Elia Viviani | Astana Pro Team | 3h59'54" | 2 | | Caleb Ewan | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 3 | | Sam Bennett | Deceuninck - Quick Step | s.t. | 4 | | Moreno Hofland | EF Education First Pro Team | s.t. | 5 | | Logan Owen | Team INEOS | s.t. | | ---------- | | | | 11 | | Ednaldo Luiz Cortes | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 5 | 160 kms
This year's Willunga stage had three ascents. Bilbao secured the KoM jersey by reaching the top first two times. The break was swept up after the second ascent. Barbero and his GC ambitions were dropped there too.
On the last, nobody could keep up with Valérien Galtier's strong acceleration. The Frenchman and winner of LBL in 2020 is basicly a younger version of Alaphilippe, who left Bahrain to ride for his own chances at AG2R. Only Alaphilippe finished in the same time today as Galtier moved into the leaders jersey.
At the back of the chasing group, we again just missed the top 10 with Verona. He also dropped to... 11th in the GC.
1 | | Valérien Galtier | AG2R La Mondiale | 3h26'05" | 2 | | Julian Alaphilippe | NTT Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 3 | | Andrea Manfredi | Bahrain - McLaren | + 14" | 4 | | Koen Bouwman | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 5 | | Tim Wellens | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | | ---------- | | | | 11 | | Carlos Verona | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 41" |
Stage 6 | 88 kms
On the traditional closing criterium in Adelaide, we finally found our way into the stage top 10. Barbero scored our first WT point of the season with a strong fourth place.
Finishing 11th in the final GC, Verona equaled our best ever overall result here in Australia in his first race with our team.
1 | | Bryan Coquard | NTT Pro Cycling Team | 1h46'37" | 2 | | Elia Viviani | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 3 | | Jasper Stuyven | CCC Team | s.t. | 4 | | Carlos Barbero | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 5 | | Erik Baska | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. |

Nice to see Caja Rural (or Ruralvia) in action again. Yeah, the GC looked so good after stage 3, you'd hope for a better result in the end. But the mountain jersey is a nice consolation.

Well, you're on the board at least, WT points wise and the mountain jersey is a nice bonus. And then it still always makes me so happy how clean and pretty the visuals are, though I feel like I point this out like every third time I post here
(Also, that should be Barbero in 4th place in the last stage's results, right?)

I agree. A he queen stage was too tough for Barbero and Herrada didn't have the legs either. If Carlos hadn't been forced to swerve past a rider in-game, he probably would have gone to the line with the chasing group. That would've put Verona on the GC podium...

You really do, but it's still much appreciated.
Yes, it should be Barbero indeed. Shouldn't have signed another Carlos really. |

Vuelta a San Juan (2.Pro)
Stage 1 | 189.2 kms
Vuelta a San Juan was the first race of the season for Vuelta winner Guerreiro and sprint talent Manuel Martínez, who finally wants to start landing wins this year.
On stage 1 he almost managed to pull one off already, as he finished second only behind Total's Christophe Laporte. Sprints favourite Matthews couldn't do better than fourth.
1 | | Christophe Laporte | Team Total Direct Energie | 4h11'25" | 2 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 3 | | Alexander Kristoff | Movistar Team | s.t. | 4 | | Michael Matthews | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 5 | | Léo Vincent | Team INEOS | s.t. |
Stage 2 | 186.2 kms
The stage finish on Mirador de Potrero was an early test for the GC riders on stage two.
Matthews' late sprint just about didn't suffice to snatch the win from Louis Meintjes. The thin South African also moved into the leaders jersey.
Guerreiro finished with the best of the rest, losing only a handful of seconds.
1 | | Louis Meintjes | BORA - hansgrohe | 4h23'52" | 2 | | Michael Matthews | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 3 | | Alexis Vuillermoz | Team Arkéa - Samsic | + 13" | 4 | | Marcelo Cotito | Colombia Tierra de Atletas | s.t. | 5 | | Bernardo Suaza | Movistar Team | s.t. | | ---------- | | | | 8 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 13" |
Stage 3 | 185.7 kms
We saw how Martínez didn't find his legs of stage 1 on the slightly uphill sprint finish on day three. Once more Laporte won, as Matthews took the overall lead thanks to some bonus seconds.
1 | | Christophe Laporte | Team Total Direct Energie | 4h05'42" | 2 | | Michael Matthews | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 3 | | Mark Cavendish | Team INEOS | s.t. | 4 | | Alexander Kristoff | Movistar Team | s.t. | 5 | | Luke Keough | DC Bank / Probaclac | s.t. | | ---------- | | | | 7 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 4 | 149 kms
Stage four, with its finish atop Alto del Amago, had GC contenders showdown written all over it. The break of the day was caught before the final climb.
Pinot attacked from very far out and only Ruben would catch up after closing the gap gradually. Two kilometers from the top, the rest of the field was already facing a huge time deficit.
Ruben caught a short breath before making his move in the steeper final kilometer. Pinot had to leave him the stage win but didn't concede any extra seconds. That couldn't be said about the rest of the so called contenders, who all lost heaps of time.
1 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | 3h32'07" | 2 | | Thibaut Pinot | Deceuninck - Quick Step | s.t. | 3 | | Bob Jungels | BORA - hansgrohe | + 2'08" | 4 | | Lachlan Morton | Team INEOS | + 2'17" | 5 | | Lawson Craddock | BORA - hansgrohe | + 2'30" |
Stage 5 | 17.4 km ITT
Cerezo had saved his legs for the time trial but the Costa Rican champion didn't handle the course to perfection, as he even failed to set a provisional fastest time.
GC wise, Ruben was a little too conservative on some sections. Pinot rode 11" faster and took over the GC lead, as former world champion Talansky won the time trial.
1 | | Andrew Talansky | Team INEOS | 23'03" | 2 | | Bob Jungels | BORA - hansgrohe | + 8" | 3 | | Nathan Brown | Deceuninck - Quick Step | + 13" | 4 | | Tobias Ludvigsson | Deceuninck - Quick Step | + 15" | 5 | | Stéphane Rossetto | Rally Cycling | + 22" | | ---------- | | | | 12 | | Angel Cerezo | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 43" |
Stage 6 | 121.7 kms
Guerreiro thus had to make up a few seconds and got a presumably last chance to do so on the mountain stage to Comechingones.
Ruben struggled to follow the first group and could only catch up after Pinot had already attacked.
The Frenchman kept gaining time and secured the overall win here. He would also take the mountain jersey from Ruben, who finished in fourth place.
1 | | Thibaut Pinot | Deceuninck - Quick Step | 2h55'42" | 2 | | Bob Jungels | BORA - hansgrohe | + 1'35" | 3 | | Loïc Bouchereau | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | 4 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 1'50" | 5 | | Victor Lafay | Deceuninck - Quick Step | s.t. |
Stage 7 | 125.7 kms
The final stage saw the sprinters' teams start the chasing too late. Alpecin-Fenix' De Bisschop won the stage from the break after a late attack, as Ruben started his season with a 2nd overall.
1 | | Hughes De Bisschop | Alpecin - Fenix | 2h40'42" | 2 | | Eduardo Estrada | Colombia Tierra de Atletas | s.t. | 3 | | Bruno Armirail | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 4 | | Richard Corazzin | DC Bank / Probaclac | s.t. | 5 | | James McLaughlin | Team INEOS | s.t. |

Mallorca Challenge (1.1)
This year, we chose to compete in only three of the races on the island.
152.9 kms | Trofeo Alcúdia
In a modest field, Carlos Barbero was one of the top favorites. It still took everything he had to win this race ahead of an aging Andrea Pasqualon.
1 | | Carlos Barbero | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | 3h20'42" | 2 | | Andrea Pasqualon | Team Novo Nordisk | s.t. | 3 | | Anthony Maldonado | Team Total Direct Energie | s.t. | 4 | | Edward Theuns | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 5 | | Adrien Petit | Israel Start Up Nation | s.t. | 6 | | José Joaquín Rojas | Bahrain - McLaren | s.t. | 7 | | Wim Alderwerelt | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 8 | | Giacomo Nizzolo | Movistar Team | s.t. | 9 | | Enrique Sanz | Fundación - Orbea | s.t. | 10 | | Luca Chirico | Vini Zabù - KTM | s.t. |
163.4 kms | Trofeo Pollença
Ion Izagirre and Verona led our team on the toughest race of our run in the Challenge.
Izagirre snuck away from a reduced group just before the final climb. For quite some time it looked like he would hold on, but Bahrain's Jordi Simón bridged inside the last kilometer.
Ion started his sprint too late and had to settle for second.
1 | | Jordi Simón | Bahrain - McLaren | 4h11'47" | 2 | | Ion Izagirre | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 3 | | Carlos Verona | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 23" | 4 | | Julian Arredondo | Movistar Team | + 44" | 5 | | Juliano Celeste | Bahrain - McLaren | + 58" | 6 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 1'00" | 7 | | Jan Hirt | Deceuninck - Quick Step | s.t. | 8 | | Steff Hermans | Deceuninck - Quick Step | s.t. | 9 | | Renaud Bailly | Bahrain - McLaren | s.t. | 10 | | Davide Ballerini | Movistar Team | s.t. |
98.1 kms | Trofeo Palma
Manuel Martínez was hoping to improve on his second place in a San Juan stage on our last day in the Challenge. Despite the flat course, he ran out of helpers.
Our former rider Lluis Mas Bonet caught and dropped Drobisch inside the last kilometer. The sprint for second was won by Tinajero, another former rider of us. Our sprinter Martínez launched a little late and came fifth.

Nice to see my ICL rider Simon take a win, though Ion surely should have beaten him.

He should have, I agree. And the Verona didn't get on his wheel situation was silly too, reminded me of the Firenze WC even. |
