Unfortunate that Sam wasn't able to defend his title, but a medal is still really good. And I think that's a very neat way to report a TT in this context, I like it

Thanks a lot.
I must have been a bummer when Sam got kicked out of the hotseat after such a long wait there and with so few. Still a medal is a result he'll be able to live with given the quite clear gap to the top two. |

 UCI World Championships - Road Race  Algiers, 269.3 kms
The first ever World Championships held on the African continent were hosted by Algeria and its capital city Algiers. The route consists of a 60 km ride from Issers to Algiers before hitting the local circuit. Each of the eight laps features a [url=blob:https://imgur.com/35df3ff8-f768-4266-963b-cb885ba63f26]mostly rolling climb of 12.7 kms[/url] with a few sections at about 10%. A quite steep descent with a bump of its own leads back to the finishing line after 25 kms.
The break of the day formed very soon after the start. The group of five consisted of Poljanski, Sam Bennett, Enger, Spengler and Nathan Brown. At the start of the local laps, 210 kms from the line, the group had a lead of about six minutes.
On the first laps Great Britain, Italy and France still shared the workload. From the penultimate, the latter took charge of the chasing on their own. Up until then literally nothing had happened, though the lead had shrunk to 2'10" (50 kms to go).
Poljanski felt how the bunch was closing in and finally broke the breakaway apart. Halfway the penultimate ascent, only Spengler still had his wheel.
Adam Yates attacked near the top on that lap, catching up with the two survivors in no time. France sacrificed Coquard to get back to the man that came third at La Vuelta. Thirty kilometers from home all was back together.
Halfway up the last climb, Verona suddenly saw himself getting a small gap. Sadly for him France sacrificed another man in Vuillermoz. Shortly after that, the winning move was made by five riders:
Alaphilippe - S. Yates - A. Yates - Benoot - a struggling Villella.
Only Ochoa found the legs to bridge and then a decisive gap was made. Alaphilippe launched a strangely timed attack just inside the last 3 kilometers, after which things almost came to a stand still under the gray-ish kite.
The fair six-way sprint was won by Benoot. The tall Belgian rode the perfect race to top of a great season in which he already won his third monument (second time Flanders) and came 7th at Le Tour winning a stage as well.
Alaphilippe probably should've counted on his sprint more instead of attacking so late in the race. Simon won't be entirely unhappy with silver as he comes in second again after La Vuelta.

Well, I wouldn't have wanted to watch it on TV tbh. 
Truth to be told, only the final lap was somewhat exciting, but the French kept our out of form Spaniards to play any major role. Benoot is a very allround rider indeed, just one of those overpowered PCM guys really.

The incredibly stacked starlist didn't make for an interesting race at all, until our team caused a big split on the second long climb, Colma di Sormano.
After that though, other teams refused to cooperate and we couldn't carry on our own. Thanks to the extremely low pace, lots of riders came back before the final climb.
Nairo Quintana attacked from that large group on Villa Vergano. Aru bridged the gap but was left stranded when Quintana's teammate Alaphilippe flew by.
A chasing group of more than 50(!) riders only lost more time on the technical descent. Alahilippe, who only won his first, became the third different French rider to triumph in a Monument race this year.
While van der Poel won the sprint for second, Izagirre was our top finisher in seventh.

Ruralvía's season recap Overview Ruralvía's season recap A word Thirty-one wins with stage/ one day wins, overall wins, jerseys and national titles combined. While this is the lowest total since the 2017 season, I'd say 2020 will go down as the quality over quantity season. My personal highlights were Barbero winning the Spanish NC Road Race and the green jersey at Le Tour afterwards, winning a Paris-Nice and a Dauphiné stage with unexpected riders and Guerreiro winning La Vuelta to top off a great year in terms of GT results.

Yes, beautifully presented summary. Many fine results, I think the Vuelta crowns the season, but the TdF green jersey is quite precious, too.

Great summary for sure. I guess if you've updated all the teams to match 2020, that can only mean the story is continuing for another year? 
Only unrealistic thing I can see is Valverde retiring

Thank you both. In the end I'm quite pleased with the results we got despite the more silent first half of the season. In the future I'd love to be able to do better in races that are not main goals. So many years have passed in the save and I still haven't found a way to compete for (GC or stage) wins in prep races for the big classics or Grand Tours.

Thanks to you too. It was always the plan to give the database a big update yet I'm still undecided about the story going on. It's taken me around 5 years to report on 4 out of the 6 seasons that I've played and with my style of reporting I doubt I can reduce the number of posts needed.
The idea of a fresh DB and a new project with new regions to focus on is tempting to say the very least. As few members have managed to keep two stories running at the same time, I'm probably going to alternate them once I've gotten used to the new game and if it turns out to be playable.
Anyway, a few non race related posts are to come before the start of the new season. |

Ah that’s understandable. I myself have thought about a new project as well. In fact having two stories running at the same time as well. (Or alternating) It’s certainly fun racing in the biggest races all the time in the WT, but it’s also fun to build a team from the ground up

If and when I get 2020, I'm quite sure I will make a faster paces story with less info there, while keep my slower than slow Astana semi-active (as always)

Off-season holiday reports Chapter 1: Cortes' trip home Ednaldo Luiz Cortes: after visiting our respective families, I made good on my promise to show Manuel (Martínez) some of my favorite spots in southern Brazil.
We started by paying a visit to Pantanal, a huge (140,000-160,000 km²) natural region in southwest Brazil on the border with Bolivia. It's a vast and the world's biggest wetland in the rainy seasons as 80% of the area is submerged then, but in drier times the local wildlife clusters around the remaining stretches of water, which made our trip in late October a very good time to be there.
One morning our local guide made us get up early so we would get to witness a stellar sunrise with this heron standing tall above the wetland.
Just a couple of days later, we would experience first hand why the area is often referred to as the best place in the world to see jaguars in the wild. Our guide's inside-out knowledge of the region resulted in us taking this Jungle Book-like photo (we know, Jungle Book did not actually have a jaguar, but you get it...)
The rain starting to fall down allowed us to do some canooing we didn't always feel comfortable about given the fact that Pantanal had and probably still has one of the highest concentrations of crocodilians in the world.
Manuel Martínez: after leaving Paranal, we booked a flight to Belo Horizonte. A long jeep drive later, we arrived in the historical Diamantina city, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As its maybe gives away already, it was the region's center of diamond mining in the 18th and 19th centuries.
We spent the rest of that day exploring the historic centre of this well-preserved Brazilian Baroque town.
We couldn't have a trip without any type of bike being involved, of course. The next day we started Caminho dos Diamantes, a 395-km trail through the Serra do Espinhaço mountains from Diamantina to Ouro Preto. The latter is a former mining city that was once counted more inhabitants than any other city in Latin America.
We chose to complete the trail in eight days so we could enjoy the surroundings as well.
Before leaving Ouro Preto, we visited the nearby Minas da Passagem, which is said to be the world´s largest mine open to the public. A tour covers the mine's history, local gold-extraction techniques and discovering the subterranean lake and a shrine to the many black slaves who died dynamiting into the rock. Ednaldo: on our way to our last stop on the mainland, we once again drove the jeep. Heading for Paraty, we made a stop at Complexo Zilda. It's a locally known park with natural slides, rock formations, rapids, caves popular with ecotourism and adventure sports lovers.
Paraty, a colonial seaside village at the end of the trail starting in Diamantina. Once heaps of golds left here by ships headed for Lisbon, because the Rio de Janeiro port had seen to many attacks by pirates and other European countries.
Last stop: Ilha Grande, an island located off the Rio de Janeiro state coast. Once home to a leper colony and then a top-security prison, the isle and Paraty were added to UNESCO's list in 2019.
Only small-scale ecotourism is being encouraged in order to protect the unique ecosystem on Ilha Granda, which is a remnant of the Brazilian rainforest. In the end we didn't stay more than a few days. Did some biking, some diving and the hike to Pico Papagaio.
We later reached Rio de Janeiro by boat as our trip came to an end. Next time we meet up will be on the bike.
