USA Pro Cycling Challenge
The top sprinters in the CT have all travelled to the USA for the 2019 USA Pro Cycling Challenge! Three flat stages followed by a short epilogue will decide the winner here, but with bonus seconds for the top 10 finishers this should be a race for the fastmen.
| FL | HIL | STA | RES | SP | ACC | PRL | Mohs | 74 | 64 | 71 | 62 | 82 | 80 | 65 | Guillen | 67 | 61 | 66 | 62 | 81 | 82 | 56 | Thorsen | 60 | 53 | 61 | 54 | 81 | 83 | 71 | Holloway | 78 | 69 | 77 | 77 | 80 | 82 | 71 | Granjel Cabrera | 75 | 69 | 75 | 71 | 80 | 77 | 71 | Moser | 72 | 67 | 73 | 69 | 80 | 79 | 72 | Carsi | 70 | 55 | 66 | 69 | 80 | 82 | 71 | Perera | 71 | 64 | 69 | 73 | 79 | 80 | 74 | Vingerling | 71 | 62 | 72 | 66 | 79 | 79 | 76 | Bennett | 71 | 63 | 74 | 68 | 79 | 79 | 57 | Suryadi | 71 | 62 | 72 | 68 | 79 | 76 | 64 | Young | 74 | 69 | 74 | 70 | 78 | 77 | 55 | Boev | 72 | 65 | 74 | 67 | 78 | 78 | 71 | Canelon | 77 | 57 | 65 | 69 | 78 | 83 | 73 | Porsev | 73 | 65 | 67 | 64 | 78 | 78 | 68 | Tewelde | 74 | 64 | 75 | 72 | 78 | 77 | 67 | Cisse | 74 | 63 | 73 | 67 | 78 | 77 | 65 | Korzh | 74 | 59 | 73 | 65 | 78 | 80 | 68 | Docker | 71 | 67 | 67 | 69 | 78 | 75 | 71 | Bogdanovics | 73 | 62 | 74 | 69 | 78 | 77 | 63 | Fonseca | 74 | 61 | 74 | 68 | 78 | 77 | 64 | Chen | 73 | 62 | 73 | 67 | 78 | 77 | 69 | Sobota | 72 | 60 | 74 | 65 | 78 | 78 | 67 | Keough | 72 | 64 | 71 | 67 | 78 | 75 | 71 | Jones | 72 | 60 | 66 | 65 | 78 | 78 | 65 | Szalontay | 69 | 52 | 64 | 65 | 78 | 77 | 70 |
The packed field here is headlined by Mohs, as well as two one dimensional fastmen in Guillen and Thorsen. More well rounded sprinters likely to challenge include home favourite Holloway, Granjel Cabrera and Moser. Two wildcards to watch due to their high Prologue stats are Perera and
Vingerling, but with 26 78+ SP riders expect a great deal of unpredictability.
| PRL | Ford | 80 | Robert | 79 | Gretsch | 79 | Cruz | 78 | Ligthart | 78 | Olman | 78 | Van Baarle | 77 | Bille | 77 | Downey | 77 | Marchewka | 77 | Sebright | 77 | Kovalev | 77 |
With the closing Epilogue likely to have a major impact on the GC positions behind the top sprinters, it's no surprise that some of the top TTers in the division have made the trip Stateside as well. Ford and Robert are the pick of the bunch, but being weaker Flat riders they could lose touch depending on how the flat stages are ridden, with Gretsch, Cruz and Ligthart the best of the more well rounded TTers.

We’ve got a very capable squad here so hoping for something good from Robert and Moser!

Well, of course hoping for Guillén to bring home some good results. We've already shown that the train with Stocker - Cissé - Guillén works pretty well, so the hopes are high. Even though we know that Guillén often performs quite unpredictably.

After the disaster that was Vilnius GP for us, I don't expect much.

Let's go Pim Ligthart!

The most important race of the season for McCormick. Starts in our sponsor's home town and is a win goal. So not time for Holloway to have an off week.
I pretty much recruited him with this race in mind. Hopefully either the 238k in the first stage or the hills in stage 3 are enough to split the pack and shred some of the one dimensional sprinters. If that happens the huge sprint field is less of a worry because some of them should be minutes behind.
Then he needs to perform reasonably in the TT.
The best team McCormick can field backing up Holloway. I am optimistic the game will identify him as a favorite which should keep him well positioned. Granjel Cabrera probably worries me the most (and just noticed Canelon), reasonable secondary stats and good prolouge. The other worry is a late attack in stage 1 or 3 and one or more of the rouleurs getting a time gap. On the other hand I would like to see some failed attacks to ramp up the pace and help to split things up. Holloway doesn't need a lead out but the team needs to be there to close gaps in the last 5-15k.
Things will be a lot clearer after stage 1. As an aside Baltimore to Annapolis is 50k direct - to make it 238k must require quite the route. Thanks for the preview.

This is course wise a very good race for our amateurs to try and grab some more results.
We have Brenton Jones for the sprints, Kovalev and Christensen can both target the time-trial and pretty much everyone apart from young Pajek is a capable rouleur to fight for the flatter KOM's or try for an upset breakaway stage win

Hey, we're here. Not sure why?
Given this season's evidence, I doubt Ligthart makes it to the finish with the peloton on all three stages before the Epilogue. Let's hope he can prove me wrong. Van Zandbeek is also here, while the rest are only for XP purposes.

Well, looks like we had a great train once again, but Guillén's low support stats probably came into play after such a long stage. Not great, but at least all three sprinters took some bonus seconds today. Please, let's improve on this tomorrow!
And a note to myself: Sprint train should be kept at all costs, but the sprinter has to be replaced. Which will surely happen, as a declining Guillén definitely shouldn't be our leader next year.

16th from Moser is nothing less than disgraceful... He should be comfortably in the Top 5 every stage here.

Not great, not a disaster. Dropped Holloway off too early, the split from Weiss was a problem - lesser sprinters would have cratered to 10th though. I can live with 3rd.
Hopefully he will more consistent than the others. But would really have liked to see some time gaps to reduce the field a little.
I would say thanks for the report except for that outrageous swipe at Baltimore in the intro:
(1) Baltimore had a team stolen from it long before Cleveland
(2) Baltimore repeatedly put forward a strong expansion bid but were screwed by the NFL for "sexier" cities like Jacksonville despite the fact Baltimore had a much stronger tradition as a pro football town. I am pretty sure if we surveyed 1000 NFL fans today 90% of them who don't live in Jacksoville would rather have a team in Baltimore. I feel for Cleveland but the NFL left Baltimore no choice.
(3) Unlike when Baltimore lost their team the NFL went out of their way to make it good for Cleveland.

Why argue in depth when you could just say "Lamar Jackson." and win?

These are all fair points, but as a Browns fan I'm obliged to bring it up every time Baltimore is mentioned
Plus, as cio points out, as soon as we get to football you've comfortably won the argument |

It's going to be a tough race for us with Chen avoiding the final sprint altogether like this.

I think he was omitted because of the >77 PCT TT rider entered in a C2 race, which is my fault. By that logic, there's another 79 TT rider who shouldn't be in the race either I think, but is still there.

That would be it - the confusion was as the participation file I used to write the preview had Ligthart in it, although the startlist didn't.
Gretsch is 77TT so is eligible despite his 79 PRL, which is probably something that needs to be looked at for next season if we continue with the same C2 eligibility rules. As the rules currently stand I believe Chavanne could have been entered here for example, despite being one of the best prologue riders full stop. |
