Alpecin-Fenix: Everything Is Possible | Season Start
HuDCC
abload.de/img/alpecinfenix_logo10005ckth.png

Finally, I have decided to give it a go. I found myself with a spare time to play PCM regularly so I will share my current career with you. It will be following the path of likes as valverde and cunego who are delivering great team stories (so a big shout out to them). The mine will be very similar, mostly consisting of just reporting the bigger races and not so much of a story line. So we will see what comes out of that and how long it will last.

I am currently starting the 3rd season with the team in the year 2019, so first I‘ll give you a brief report of what happened the two years before that as I am playing with Daily DB starting in 2017.

Game Setup
Database:PCM Daily 2017, with a lot of changes
Team:Alpecin-Fenix
Difficulty:Extreme

Other Notes
I like the sense of realism a lot. So I’m controlling a lot of transfers, sponsor changes and also edited some attributes. And I will be doing also during the story.

Mostly I will be following Mathieu van der Poel during the reports as he is the main star of the team and is the reason why I even started playing.

That is all for now. Hope you will enjoy my career with me and will be following. Played seasons overview and 2019 season presentation will come in the next days so stay tuned!

Alpecin-Fenix 2017
In 2017 Alpecin-Fenix competed in the Continental Tour, but the goal was to push for the Pro Continental in 2018. The plan worked very well with Alpecin domitaning most lower level races mostly thanks to Mathieu Van der Poel, Tim Merlier and Roy Jans.

MVDP also featured well in the HC races, with podium in De Brabantse Pijl in his first start here. He added wins in Le Samyn, GP de la Somme and Paris-Troyes, and also won GC of Boucles de Mayenne, where he added two stage wins.

Roy Jans achieved podium places in HC one-day races like Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne or Primus Classic. Also delivered a few wins during the later stages of the season and was the best point getter in Continental classification of our team.

Tim Merlier developed into very decent sprinter at this level, and also showed his abilities against big guys with stage win in Oman or in Belgium Tour. Add to that some .1 and .2 level one-day wins and the Pro Continental level was secured.

Alpecin-Fenix 2018
After the promotion to the Pro Continental level the management though why not to go big, so we applied for a few wild cards – Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Dward door Vlaanderen, E3, Gent-Wevelgem, Ronde van Vlaanderen, Ardennes, BinckBank Tour and Bretagne Classic.

And what a World Tour debutes these were. In the Omloop Van der Poel was there until the end losing by a bike length to Zdenek Stybar. However, in March he delivered... in Dwars door Vlaanderen defeating Jasper Stuyven. Then he finished spring off with TOP10 results in E3, Gent-Wevelgem and also in De Ronde, finishing 7th.

As it wasn't enough he continued in classic MVDP style, winning De Brabantse Pijl and finishing on podium in Amstel coming juuust short of a win. After strong spring campaign he was a huge favourite for Dutch national championships, and he, once again, proved his talents by winning the title. Wearing the Dutch champion jersey he then finished the season off with wins in Plouay and Primus Classic.

These strong results were supported once again by solid results of Roy Jans and Tim Merlier, as well as Lasse Norman Hansen. During the transfer period Alpecin got much stronger supporting cast, especially for the spring classics. So the goals are set even higher.

Besides Aplecin season, in 2018 there were two huge moments. Chris Froome captured his 5th Tour de France win, and then Tom Dumoulin has became the first rider in history to win rainbow in road race and individual time trial.

A lot of team still remain within the same sponsorships. Some of them went through rebranding, like Lotto Soudal, Sunweb or Jumbo-Visma, where the LottoNL stepped down just before the season.

On the other hand, BMC quit the first division completely for now, and Tag Heuer took over the team with a decent budget raise that saw them attract more decent riders.

As well as BMC, in 2018 also Katusha stopped supporting the team and it was time for Italy to come back to World Tour after a few absent years as Lavazza took over the team formerly sponsored by Katusha. We can see that the team is slowly changing towards the Italian core.

In the Pro Continental level, Aqua Blue merged with Israel Cycling Academy before the 2019 season and they built decent squad with two Irish leaders – Dan Martin and Sam Bennett. Cofidis and Arkéa-Samsic also belong to the best teams in the second level of pro cycling.

Good luck! It will be interesting to see how the team looks and how riders have developed.

Ollfardh
Excellent choice for a team. Mathieu the most allround cyclist ever, big fan of Merlier as well (I think we can still exepct much more from him) and all in all a team of very underrrated riders. Will be following this!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

The third post has been updated with the brief season reviews: Check it here

@valverde: Thank you, honoured that you are interested in this. Everything should be revealed tomorrow and then the proper racing will start.

@Ollfardh: Can confirm both of them developed quite nicely and both are still part of the team. Love playing with MVDP, you can content in every race.

@Croatia: Cheers mate, finally got some schedule for next season. Have some time until July so decided to share the story, not just playing it for myself.
Thank you Andy for everything!

Good luck with this! I second Ollfardh, very nice team choice. And kinda cool to see my story may have been a small part of the motivation Smile

Very neat overview of the previous two seasons. Some wild results, especially the Giro and Vuelta in 2017, what a year for Pozzovivo, and if Adrien Petit ever comes even close to something like winning PR, I'm going to lose it Grin

Also, I was looking through your previous threads and I actually have vague memories of Mario Rizzi! Interested to see where you take this Smile

The third post was updated with the information about upcoming 2019 season. All the WT teams are present. Next up, probably tomorrow, is presantation of the Alpecin-Fenis squad, calendar and goals!

@cunego: Thank you. I love that you all like the team choice. Yeah, some results look quite funny. I didn't race any WT races in 2017, so it is all simulation though...
Thank you Andy for everything!

2019 Alpecin-Fenix Team Presentation
abload.de/img/alpecinfenix_logo10005ckth.png

abload.de/img/2019alpecinrhj1p.png

Before the 2019 season Alpecin-Fenix signed some very interesting riders like Mike Teunissen or Loic Vliegen and bolstered the classics squad. Also you can see we signed some promising young talents like Jasper Philipsen, Mikkel Bjerg or David Dekker, who all should play a bigger role in the upcoming years. Also Andries Van Dreggen is our big hope for Ardennes classics in the future. He is a product of our scouting and is part of the team for the second season now and his development is very promising.

For now and hopefully for the long future the team is mostly equipped around one of the biggest cycling stars – Mathieu Van Der Poel.

Leaders
Mathieu Van Der Poel
Objectives
Ronde van Vlaanderen
Dutch NC
Vuelta a Espana

Mathieu Van Der Poel is looking towards the spring classics – starting with Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and finishing the campaign at Amstel Gold Race. He then will take a long rest and will focus on defending his NC title. His main goal for the autumn will be La Vuelta, which we hope we could contest on the wild-card.
Tim Merlier
Objectives
Abu Dhabi Tour
Ster ZLM Toer
BinckBank Tour

Tim Merlier will start his season early focusing on the Middle East stage races as his first objective is Abu Dhabi Tour. Then he will be riding mostly in Belgium and the Netherlands with the goal being stage wins and one-day races.
Roy Jans
Objectives
Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne
Baloise Belgium Tour
Brussels Cycling Classic

Basically, Roy Jans will be our leader in the races where MVDP nor Tim Merlier will be riding. His focus is mainly on the semiclassics and supporting MVDP whenever is needed.
Andries Van Dreggen
Objectives
Liege-Bastogne-Liege
Baloise Belgium Tour
BinckBank Tour

As it was said earlier, Van Dreggen is another upcoming Dutch prospect. His main focus in the future should be Ardennes, but he is quite ready now to lead the team here as we don't have better puncher. We will see what he can achieve as there is no pressure for him to deliver this season. He will have free hand in most races.
Mike Teunissen
Objectives
Ronde van Vlaanderen
4 Jours de Dunkerque
BinckBank Tour

Mike Teunissen's role is quite clear right now – he will be the right hand for MVDP in most one-day races. Anyway, we will try to fit race where he will lead the team with his experience from World Tour level.

So this is the team Alpecin-Fenix for the season 2019. Our biggest goals are set in the months of March and April. We feel like the squad we assembled is ready to fight with the World Tour teams right here and now. However, our big goal is also to build for the future which as we believe we are achieving very well with all the young riders on the roster. We have big hope for the likes Van Dreggen, Philipsen or Dekker to become well known names in the world of cycling. Hand in hand with MVDP of course. There is no denying with rider of his caliber you should shoot for the stars as the saying goes and we believe exactly in that.

Thank you Andy for everything!

The first three stages were regular sprinters showdown, with stage 3 featuring uphill finish in the last kilometer. Tim Merlier was our go-to man and he achieved three TOP10 finishes, one of them was 2nd place on stage 2. The last stage around Dubai was very windy and with the chaos it brought, the breakaway was succesful. We had Dries De Bondt here and he finished on the podium. Overall, it was decent start to the season in the Middle East building up towards the Abu Dhabi Tour at the end of February.

No real ambititions for us here. MVDP's goal was to prepare for the first classics of the year as he tested himself on the slopes of Alto d'Malhao against the better climbers. Overall we are leaving Portugal on a good note and MVDP is ready for Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.

Tour de la Provence was an another race where our only goal was to get to the breakaways and try to do something here. Van Dreggen achieved decent results in the two hilly stages and ended up on the solid 5th place in the GC, which was nice for us.

Thank you Andy for everything!
