So far this Vuelta has been about Simon Yates and crashes. And today was no different. Two of Jumbo main riders crashed: Laurens De Plus and Mike Teunissen. While De Plus was unharmed and was able to rejoin the red jersey group rather easily, Teunissen was not so lucky and he had to retire for a second time in a Grand Tour this year due to a crash.
We had a breakaway very similar to the one from the previous stages. But there's a reason why most of these guys are out of the GC fight and that is their legs. Today only one survivor: Giulio Ciccone. But with everyone finishing more than 2 minutes behind him, he did not only get the stage win but a nice jump in the overall rankings as well
Froome can't be happy with losing both of his Grand Tour crowns from last year. And he was on attack today. Multiple times. Yates wasn't bothered to follow him most of the time so he must have been really surprised when inside the last kilometer the red jersey wearer flew past him. Yates has been timing his attacks to perfection so far and today he displayed it once again
Losing a bit of energy to get back into the pack after his crash might have affected De Plus today as he struggle on such a long climb. He lost time to all of his main rivals today, but at the end of the stage he still stands in second and leading the white jersey classification by 1 minute and 51 seconds

At the start of the stage, Froome definitely must have looked at this as an opportunity to gain time on his much younger rivals. But he did not enjoy the weather today and he ended up with a very bad ride which culminated with him being overtaken by De Plus in the last kilometer!
De Plus overtaking Froome was not only due to the Ineos rider weakness, but also due to a very strong ride put in by the former Belgian time - trial champion. De Plus absolutely flew in the last part of the stage where he gained at least one minute on everyone else to take the stage win
Yates had similar times to De Plus at the intermediate checkpoints, but as soon as the road flattened out he began losing time to the Jumbo rider, finishing in the end 1 minute and 19 seconds slower. No panic for Simon though as his lead in the overall rankings is still almost 3 minutes, while both Froome and Oomen were slower than him today.

Nibali and Pinot were the strongest in the favorites group today, but those involved in the fight for the podium were not exactly interested in following them given the current gaps in the GC. The two of them caught up to Joe Dombrowski one corner before the final kilometer mark, shattering the American's hopes for a stage win
Inside the last kilometer, Pinot left the others to behind and went for the stage win. The Frenchman would also move into the top 5 at the end of the stage. He stepped up quite nicely to leadership duties after Adam Yates had to withdrew from the race and Lopez not being up for it as he is now riding his third Grand Tour of the year
No gaps between the big three today: Yates, De Plus and Froome. The latter will get back on the podium as Sam Oomen lost 30 seconds to the red jersey group today.

De Plus' excellence continues, great stuff! Hopefully, he can at least hold onto 2nd in the final days, and who knows, maybe that TT momentum (awesome win!) could carry over into an attack on red if Yates shows weakness?
Also, Pinot away from FDJ feels so wrong

The fitness peak is just enough to have him hang on. Beating Yates seems impossible 
Yeah, it's weird and Lotto mostly used him as a domestique. He got quite lucky here with Yates crashing out. Hopefully he'll make smarter choices in the future
Oh, and with both Pinot and Demare gone I'm very surprised FDJ are still a World Tour team given they brought no replacements in.

The pack kept the breakaway on a very tight leash today, never allowing them an advantage of more than 2 minutes. On the last categorized climb of the day, 2 riders attacked from the pack to join and then leave the breakaway group behind: Valgren and Reichenbach. They were joined on the downhill by one of the escapees: Dylan Van Baarle.
Valgren was clearly the strongest out of the 3 and after an unsuccessful first attack he managed to leave the others two behind with a more put together attack as they were approaching the finishing climb. Dombrowski missed out on the stage win yesterday, but Dimension Data finally get it today with Valgren!

Theres a bug in PCM 18 that FDJ doesnt have a budget and so never sign anyone. It happens in all databases I believe. I just transfer riders to their team myself.

Damn. That sucks, but I don't want to make transfers for them. There's no way of fixing their budget instead?

I think there is, but Im not sure if I did it wrong or you need to do it before you start a career, as it didnt seem to work for me. I forget what it was though. I've done some searching and cant find it now.
My workaround was during the transfer season, if there are continental french riders that would be realistic for FDJ, but are joining an unrealistic team like Caja Rural I just edit the team ID in DYN_Contract_Cyclist to FDJs ID and they join FDJ instead in the savegame with an editor.

It looks like they are still doing renewals so they can at least keep some of their talents such as Gaudu, Vincent or Madouas. I guess I'll add 2 or 3 riders like you suggested.

The rain produced a lot of crashes in Canada and after ending Tobias Foss' season earlier than expected, it also ended Van Aert's hopes for a good result. Most of the Lotto team went down and brought Van Aert with them as well. Wout escapes unharmed, but their leader, Tim Wellens, had to withdrew.
Only 21 riders were left in the pack after the Lotto crash and it was pretty much every man for himself. Gaudu lead for a good portion of the last kilometre and looked like he was set to win until Carapaz produced an amazing amount of speed to catch up to him and beat him and take a very surprising win.

The pack had no intention of bringing back the 12 man breakaway group that we had today. At the top of the last climb, Kruijswijk attacked form the breakaway group and was joined by Ruben Fernandez. No one else had the power to follow them
The duo would keep their advantage on the downhill to settle the win between themselves. Sadly for Jumbo, Fernandez got the better of Kruijswijk and took the win. It would have been a redeeming win for Kruijswijk in a race where his main accomplishment has been to be the last man standing next to De Plus in most mountain stages.

What was supposed to be a celebration race for Roglic's activity with Jumbo throughout the years turned into a nightmare for the Slovenian. Today he was involved in another crash just as the main group was about to start the mythical Angliru.
But more important for the current configuration of the race was Sam Oomen's involvement in the crash. The Dutchman sat in fourth overall at the start of the stage and is in real danger of losing his place in the GC
Many attacks from the riders that are down in the GC at the start of the Angliru. Ineos used their great numbers to set up the pace in the red jersey group using those attacks as an excuse, while in reality they were probably making sure Oomen, the only rider capable of putting Froome's podium place in danger was kept at bay
Froome's Grand Tour season this year has been a huge disappointment if you compare it to last year and today he felt like he had a point to prove and he soon went into multiple attacks. None of them were good enough to produce any real damage though and he exhausted himself as he some many riders, including Simon Yates, going past him.
It was a very hard climb and towards the end of it was every man for himself. Laurens De Plus didn't follow any attacks and chose to ride in his own rhythm, but still tried to keep Froome in his eye sight. The Brit was more than 3 and a half minutes behind him in the GC, but it was better to avoid any surprises
At the front of the race, four of the strongest climbers from the breakaway would settle the win between themselves with a sprint as soon as the slope begin to wear down. And it was Chaves who took the win on one of the most important climbs in cycling
Pinot was first from the GC riders today as he moved past Oomen in the GC to take fourth. Yates was next as he gained time over his main rivals, De Plus and Froome. Speaking of them, Froome ended up winning 20 seconds over De Plus, not nearly enough of what he need. Baring any slip ups tomorrow, De Plus will finish second and take the white jersey as well. What a race for the Belgian!

The tricky finale sure reminded Van Aert of the last stage in the Deutschland Tour, which he had won in the last two years. So there was no surprise when he broke free on the last uphill section of the day in an attempt to trick the pack. Behind him, Benoot was a leading a 3 man chase group
Van Aert move would end in the very last corner, when he was caught by the three chasers. Colbrelli won the sprint, with Benoot taking second and Roux third, while Van Aert missed out not only on the win but the podium as well

Very few opportunities for sprinters in this Vuelta and no win yet for Van Poppel meant that Jumbo were quick to jump at the front of the pack as the race reached the final kilometres. Despite a good lead out from Van Baarle, Jansen was not as strong as needed and Van Poppel had been overtaken by some sprinters under the 1 kilometre banner
We had a clear leader inside the last kilometre as Demare launched Hodeg perfectly which actually gave him a gap to the other sprinters and the Colombian was strong enough to held on and claim his second win of the race.
No changes at the top of the rankings today. Simon Yates wins despite this being the 3rd Grand Tour he rides this year. Not only that but he takes the points and KoM classifications as well. Laurens De Plus finishes the race of his career so far to take second in the GC and the white jersey.

It looked it was going to be a very interesting battle between the Belgium and the Dutch champions in the final sprint, but Capiot faded in the closing meters of the stage to leave Van Poppel with a rather comfortable win.

Van Poppel absolutely dominated the race last year, but it's safe to say this year he has upped his game in regard of races won so he chose to skip this one. It was Grosu who was supposed to lead the team, but the Romanian just didn't have the legs to perform on home soil after a very hard but successful season even though he came very close to claim a redeeming stage win in the final one, but surprisingly lost to Sergio Higuita.
Higuita would win 2 of the five stages of the race, but not the overall. Ivan Garcia Cortina also won two stages, but was more consistent outside those wins than the Colombian to take the overall win as well.
Cortina took the yellow jersey after the first stage and never lost it

Geraint Thomas won the tile last year and even though it was on a mountainous terrain he should have been one of the favorites this year as well. But after winning the Tour de France in July, Thomas had not shown up in races to perform and today was no different and he ended up outside the top 10
It was his team - mate, Jonathan Castroviejo who managed a very surprising ride that could very well have been good enough for the title
But the actual winner would be even more surprising than Castroviejo: Lennard Kamna. The young German had a fantastic day and he stopped the clock 7 seconds faster than Castroviejo
On paper, Campenaerts was the big favorite today but he failed to even reach the podium, with Van Garderen taking the last podium spot behind Kamna and Castroviejo
