We are back to the flat stages in the Tour for the next couple of days. The Jumbo train controlled the final quite well, but once again Groenewegen just did not have the speed to fight for the stage win

i.imgur.com/ZJu30wh.jpg

With Groenewegen out of it, the other sprinters are sure having a blast as we have had a different winner in each sprint so far and today is no different as Caleb Ewan takes the stage to make it two in a row for Lotto Soudal. Demare finished second to take the green jersey from Matthews

Some shy competition for Jumbo today from Bora who finally looked like they managed to put their three sprinters to work together. Despite winning the first sprint, Ackermann did not get a great team support so far, with Sagan and Bennett not keen to work for him

i.imgur.com/0Ie2P0D.jpg

Even though he was blocked by Sagan, Groenewegen managed his best sprint of this Tour. It was only enough for a second place, with Matthews being a head above the rest today as he claims the stage win and the green jersey back

Many talked about the probability that Froome will take a step back this Tour and while some questions were answered when he started pacing in the favorites group closing down Romain Bardet's attack, all questions were answered a few kilometers later when he was actually dropped from the group. With him was one of the Plance des Belles Filles performers: Simon Yates

i.imgur.com/sboR7Hm.jpg

The climb was not steep enough to create gaps between the other favorites and being quite a few kilometers away from the finish line certainly didn't help. Geraint Thomas repaid the faith his team has put in him and won the sprint for the stage win to consolidate his GC lead

Valerio Conti showed some good climbing skills earlier this year in California and today he displayed some of them as well as he becomes the first serious leader of the polka dots classification. A shame the breakaway would not make it to the finish line as he would have been the clear favorite to take the stage win as well

i.imgur.com/6G2TsS8.png

Kruijswijk was first at the summit of the last climb of the day. He was joined by the UAE duo of Dan Martin and Tadej Pogacar on the donwhill, but with so many kilometers still left of the stage and plenty of Ineos riders left in the main group their move was doomed

i.imgur.com/CsoBpBh.png

It was a game of cat and mouse in the final kilometers. Romain Bardet proved to have the freshest legs and the most clear mind to claim the stage win. Last year only Froome stood between him and the yellow jersey and with the Brit out of the equation now, he surely feels he can finally deliver the big win for the French cycling

i.imgur.com/lyEtlSJ.png

The stage brought some really bad news for Jumbo as Teunissen was forced to abandon the race after a mass crash in the pack. Dimension Data's leader, Bauke Mollema also withdrew as a result of the same crash. Richie Porte might have picked up an injury in the crash as well as today he drops from 2nd in the GC to 15th

Other teams must be well aware by now by Groenewegen's issues as they become more and more aggressive towards the end of stages. Today, both Bora and Sunweb fought very hard for control of the sprint

i.imgur.com/1M3IQiT.jpg

But it wouldn't be any of their sprinters who would bring home the bacon. It was Education First's Christophe Laporte who crossed the finish line first. Romain Bardet won yesterday on Bastille day, but Laporte keeps the French party going

A rather interesting situation in today's finale as Van Aert and Grosu had a bit of a gap to the rest of the pack in the last corner of the stage. Groenewegen had lost Grosu's wheel and was caught with the other sprinters behind Sunweb's messy lead-out

i.imgur.com/WKLoKod.jpg

The Jubmo duo managed to hold in front of the sprinters led surprisingly by Groenewegen who completed a 100% black and yellow podium. Grosu won the stage to become the first Romania ever to win a stage at the Tour de France!

i.imgur.com/UAFhM4u.jpg

It was a fantastic result for Jumbo, but it also points out Groenewegen's ingrate situation where everyone seems to be beating him. Even his team - mates

George Bennett was in the breakaway today and ended up getting most of the KoM points as he was first across the top of both category climbs as well as the HC climb.

i.imgur.com/UCPSaUv.jpg

He missed out on the stage win though as he was caught at the top of the last category 1 climb (Col de Peyresourde) as well as the polka dots jersey, with Betancur (second in the rankings at the start of the stage) moving into the lead of the mountain rankings

At the foot of the finishing hill, Pogacar and Bardet continued their Peyresourde aggression (which was neutralized by Ineos rather easy) and attacked. They were followed by Lopez, Thomas and Geoghegan Hart, who was doing a fantastic domestique job for the yellow jersey

i.imgur.com/JKTT8S4.jpg

Kruijswijk and Dan Martin joined the leading group in the final kilometer, but neither were strong enough to fight for the stage win, with Martin actually being distanced again once the sprint begun. Pogacar won the sprint to move second in the GC, with Thomas also claiming some more bonus seconds

Conti seems to have given up on the polka dots jersey as he was not in the breakaway today. Bennett and Betancur continued their battle throughout the day on the first two climbs. Bennett would reduce Betancu's lead by 9 points, trailing the Columbian only by 7 points

i.imgur.com/I2LmTBI.jpg

On the last climb Bennett attacked and only Mas and Bettiol were able to follow him. The trio was then joined on the descent by Rui Costa. In the closing kilometers, Bennett made one last move for the stage win, but Bettiol was quick to react and easily took the victory in the sprint

Both Groenewegen and Van Aert were part of today's breakaway. Groenewegen won the intermediate sprint before putting in some huge turns in before returning back to the pack. Dylan's effort had a big impact on the eventual success of the breakaway.

On the last long-ish hill of the day, 5 riders went clear from their fellow escapees: Van Aert, Izagirre, Madouas, Wyss and Edet. Van Aert was clearly the strongest out of the group and had no trouble keeping the others at bay as he takes hi maiden stage Tour victory

Jumbo had managed to put two of their riders in the breakaway once again, with Grosu and Bennett making it this time. The polka dot jersey wearer, Carlos Betancur was also present and would actually end up increasing his lead by 5 points

i.imgur.com/ULS3WUQ.jpg

The bad news would continue for Jumbo as Grosu was dropped from the leading group of the breakaway on the last category 1 climb of the day. Today's climbs really suited Betancur and it was highlighted not only by the amount of points he won of them, but also by his attack on the last one to claim today's stage win. A perfect stage for the Movistar rider

Miss calculation by the sprinters teams today as the breakaway of 5 riders managed to make it to the finish and steal one of the sprinter's last opportunity before Paris. Sean Bennett won the sprint in the breakaway to give EF their 3rd stage win this tour. They are not counting in the GC but they are sure making the best out of their race

i.imgur.com/6GyQRQU.jpg

A crash in the pack as they were desperately chasing after the breakaway affected Thomas and Pogacar's main domestiques, with Geoghegan Hart and Dan Martin losing time and a couple of places in the GC

An impressive ride by George Bennett in today's breakaway as he took the polka dots jersey from Betancur, who despite being in the breakaway did not have the legs to put up much of a fight. Bennett becomes a very deserving jersey wearer as he was first across the top of all the main climbs of the day: Croix de Fer, Telegraphe and Galibier

i.imgur.com/4RWCgAm.jpg

In the favorites group, Pogacar and Bardet attacked the yellow jersey on Galibier. They were joined by Simon Yates and even though they managed to get gap it would all come down to nothing because of the long descent to the finish line where Ineos managed to make up the deficit

i.imgur.com/BezruFF.jpg

Bennett had been in the lead of the race since the top of the Galibier, but a very dramatic finish saw him being caught by Poland and Zakarin right before the finish line, with the Slovenian sprinting away to take the stage win

i.imgur.com/lsrzWHZ.jpg

Bennett ended the day with an advantage of 31 points over Betancur in the KoM rankings. It's a very remarkable lead as only a maximum of 38 points can be gained in the next couple of the stages, with the last two being a time - trial and the Champs Elysee stage

Go GB, great riding in Week 3! Hopefully he can hold onto the KOM and maybe nab a stage win if he isn't tied up with Kruiswijk, but it might be best for the team if he does help the leader who still has a shot in a very entertaining and tense GC race!

15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"

Given how tired Betancur looked today, I don't think he can make up the ground. And Kruijswijk was quite lucky the racing was quite soft so far as he was almost always isolated from his team-mates on the last climb. So Bennett will most likely be sticking with Kruijswijk for the last mountain stage Smile

32 KoM points put into today's mix. If he were to get them all, Betancur would move back into the lead, with only 3 category climbs from tomorrow's stage left to award any points

With Bennett not a part of the breakaway today, Betancur did everything perfectly in the first part of the race, but as soon as the first slopes of the final climb on Izoard were reached, it became clear that even if the break would make it to the finish, it was almost impossible for him to take the stage win and the polka dots jersey as Barguil and Formolo were both not only better climbers but they also had much fresher legs

i.imgur.com/BaAPqcP.jpg

In the favorites group, Bardet and Lopez were on the attack, but Thomas was quick to follow them. Pogacar and Kruijswijk were in a group behind, neither of them looking as good as this trio. But with Dan Martin's on Pogacar side nothing was over yet

i.imgur.com/6wXTAZD.jpg

As the summit approached Bardet got away from the other two and started catching up to the remains of the breakaway. Meanwhile, Pogacar had managed to bridge the gap to Thomas and Lopez, with the latter now looking like suffering

i.imgur.com/T5r8QLc.jpg

Bardet had the legs to get away from the other favorites but he was only good enough to move into second in the GC, winning less than 30 seconds to the yellow jersey and not posing any real threat to G's lead. Bardet even failed to catch up to Barguil who had a a very brave ride today to take the stage win and move in the top 10 in the GC

i.imgur.com/ylnsHBz.jpg

Yesterday's efforts were quite visible on Bennett today, who was not able to be of much help to Kruijswijk as the Dutch rider dropped a place in the GC and it would take a miracle now to see him repeat last year's podium. Still, with the news of Betancur failing to gain the need points on the last climb all over the radio, the last kilometer of the climb was definitely enjoyed by the Kiwi

The pack had absolutely not interest in bringing the breakaway back in today. After the last climb of the day, 3 riders went clear from the rest of the breakaway group to settle the stage win between themselves: Gruzdev, Benoot and Delaplace

Two kilometers before the finish line, Benoot surprised the other two and managed to get a gap to which allowed him to remain in front until the end of the stage as he grabbed Lotto's 3rd stage win of the race

I deleted the screenshots for the last two stages thinking I have already cropped them. While I had the replay to save me for the last stage, there are no replays for time - trials so there'll be no pictures from today's stage.

Froome was a shadow of the man that did the Tour-Vuelta double last year that everyone was taken by surprise when he set up a time that was certainly good enough to take the stage win in the rainy streets of Marseille.

It would be his team-mate who would deny the stage win as Geraint Thomas ends his Tour on a very high note as the podium remains unchanged from yesterday's situation.

Kruijswijk managed to take third in the stage, which was enough to take fourth from Miguel Angel Lopez, but the Dutch rider would certainly feel disappointed that he was not able to repeat last year's feast and be on the podium in Paris.

Mustve been a short ITT as Bardet got the same time as Jungels. Too bad you missed out on the podium with Kruijswijk but still a solid race and the KOM jersey is a bonus.

Yeah, it was only 22km. This was actually the 2017 Tour route. Bardet looked very good in the final week so I'm guessing his fitness level was off the roof too.
