Last year, Jumbo went into the Tour de France after winning 3 of their prep races. After Kruijswijk and Van Poppel failed to retained this titles this year, it was no all left on Roglic to boost up the team's morale. And he did not disappoint as the Slovenian dominated both stages that would shape up the GC: the queen mountain stage and the final time - trial in Bern.

Roglic was not the only rider to mirror his result from last year. Simon Yates also retained his place on the podium. The race also marked Louis Vervaeke's first win for the team, after a successful breakaway.

Two riders attacked early today and they would make it to the finish line: Hakon Aalrust and Jumbo's Tobias Foss. Foss tried a late attack, but it was not good enough to leave the Coop rider behind, who was far too strong today and ended up winning the national title.

Bahrain were set not to let a breakaway win this year's Slovenian road race championships and as a result we saw a four way sprint between the strongest riders in the race (Mohoric, Pogacar, Roglic and Polanc) for the title, with Mohoric coming out on top. Mission accomplished for Bahrain.

The sponsors have had their eyes on the Belgian title for a couple of years now, but with some light cobblestones and some light gravel, it's hard to avoid a sprint in Belgium and none of our Belgian riders are exactly fast in these conditions. Debusschere had another strong sprint this year, but it was only enough for a podium, with Capiot taking this year's title.

A change of scenario in the Netherlands, with a hilly route replacing last year's flat race. It was still Danny Van Poppel who came out on top though, after a brilliant team effort, first to catch the breakaway and then by Kruijswijk and Gesink to keep the attackers at bay.

Chris Froome will be looking for a record breaking 6th win at the Tour de France. His biggest threat seems to be coming from Lopez, but with the Colombian having already raced Il Giro, everyone is questioning how long well his legs will last.

Bardet and Kruijswijk are both looking to repeat last year's podiums, but with Yates, Pogacar, Landa, the Mitchelton duo of Quintana and Nibali, as well as Froome's British liutenants at the start, it won't be an easy task.

Groenewegen will be looking to take another green jersey, but there are questions in the pack surrounding his shape, having raced quite a lot this season. Michael Matthews has had quite an amazing season so far and with his ability of going over hills as well, he surely must be the favorite despite Groenewegen's success last year.

Tour de France: Stage 1
[img-r]https://i.imgur.com/OFh7zwr.png[/img-r]
i.imgur.com/h5U5qVC.jpg

We kick off this year's Tour de France with a 14km time-trial in Dusseldorf. A victory today would means also the opportunity to wear the yellow jersey for a few days.

Geraint Thomas was among the early starters and he set up a very good reference time, finishing in 15 minutes and 38 seconds.

i.imgur.com/fKhXNAB.jpg

Steven Kruijswijk, Jumbo's GC leader, started his campaign with a very good result, just 11 seconds slower than the World Champion

i.imgur.com/aHASYa3.jpg

Bob Jungels was faster than Thomas at the intermediate check point, but failed to materialize on his advantage on the second part of the stage and stopped the clock 3 seconds slower than G

i.imgur.com/YqvpBGn.jpg

Rohan Dennis beat both Jungels and Thomas at the intermediate marker and unlike the Luxembourgian Champion, he managed to keep the pace in the second part as well as he crossed the line 3 seconds faster than Thomas. Surely, he'll be today's winner

i.imgur.com/ZkrKHF4.jpg

Froome will be looking for his sixth win in this year's Tour de France. He is not off to a great start though as he finished 47 seconds slower than Dennis, in 46th. The Brit must be peaking for the third week, otherwise this does not look good at all

Kump, Martinez and Venter had each won one of the first 3 climbs of the day, which made their battle for the last KoM points even more interesting, with Venter being first at the top of the climb to claim this year's first polka dots jersey

i.imgur.com/ijpxCzh.jpg

Jumbo's train looked very strong today as they marched on to the finish line, with almost every member of the team at the front of the pack at the 10 km mark

i.imgur.com/oleK6HE.jpg

After a good lead-out, Groenewegen just did not have the speed to fight for the podium today, with Bora's Pascal Ackermann taking today's stage win. It's quite fitting that the German champion would win this year's first inline stage with the Tour starting from Dusseldorf

After the first two categorized climbs of the day, both Pacher and Van Lerberghe have matched Venter's points tally. On the last climb, it was Van Lerberghe who managed to snatch another point an the polka dots jersey with it

i.imgur.com/evhh9jz.jpg

As we reached the finishing hill, Jumbo moved to the front of the pack to both protect Kruijswijk and try to give either Grosu or Teunissen a shot at the stage win. On the other side of the road, Formolo and Matthews were having plans of their own

i.imgur.com/b1TgnAf.jpg

Neither Grosu nor Teunissen were strong enough to go for the win today though. It was instead Matthews who profited by Formolo's early work on the climb to add a Tour de France stage win to his already impressive season. Geraint Thomas finished second to move into the overall lead of the race as the duo got a gap of 11 seconds to the rest of the pack.

i.imgur.com/NGb3Llp.jpg

Geraint Thomas only needed the bonus seconds to hold on in front of Matthews as the yellow jersey wearer, Rohan Dennis was caught on the right side of a split in the pack and dropped out of the first page of the GC

We are back with a classic mass sprint stage in the Tour de France and what better color to have at the pack as we are closing down the final kilometers of the stage than yellow? It was of course Jumbo's train who were once again in control of things

i.imgur.com/7lfUBfx.jpg

Groenewegen's poor form is becoming quite obvious at this point though as the Dutch rider once again failed to even reach the stage's podium despite a very good work done by his team. It was France's new national champion who claimed the stage win for Quick Step: Arnaud Demare

We reach the mountains quite early in this year's Tour de France as we have our first mountain finish today on the Planche des Belle Filles.

Groenewegen might have disappointed in the sprints so far, but he is not abandoning the fight for the green jersey. Today, he was in the breakaway and won the intermediate sprint

i.imgur.com/eYPHn3Y.jpg

It would not be a day for the breakaway though as the GC men wanted to settle this one between themselves. A group of five riders got away from the others in the last 2 kilometers of the climb: Lopez, Pogacar, S. Yates, Porte and Thomas

i.imgur.com/b2gxUfL.jpg

Lopez is definitely carrying on to his great form from Giro and Dauphine in this first week of the Tour and he takes today's win. The yellow jersey will stay on Geraint's shoulders after today too and with quite a comfortable gap to the next riders.

i.imgur.com/NRbhYDp.jpg

Froome won the sprint of the group behind, but him not being in the first group, while Thomas was could potentially shake up things in the Ineos camp as the World TT Champion is now 1 minute and 23 minutes in front of last year's Tour de France winner

Hasnt been a great start for Groenewegen but the GC isn't looking too bad atm. Looks like Thomas is Ineos' leader as Froome is not up there.

alexkr00
I messed up Groenewegen's preparation this year and used him in too many races. He's tired and his fitness level is dropping as well as only getting negative race day condition.
