As a last prep race ahead of La Vuelta, a few riders who had been training in Belgium but skipped Eneco Tour, joined some men that did race last week.

The last passing on the cobbled Paddestraat caused a split, yet everything came back together due to that group loitering.

Cortes did his leadout for Manuel Martínez, but the latter couldn't keep Teunissen behind him. In a close battle for second, the Uruguayan had to let Alderwerelt pass as well.

Ruralvía and RTP to go separate ways
August 19th, 2020
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/fr/c/cf/RTP_Internacional_logo_2012.png
This Wednesday morning the Ruralvía team and RTP, now its former co- sponsor, have agreed to to terminate the existing contract by consent.

The Portuguese public service broadcasting organisation had joined our team as a main partner less than a year ago. Ruben Guerreiro's promising development persuaded them into providing the team with a significant financial injection.

Despite the fact that both parties will go separate ways earlier than intended, we would like to thank our former Portuguese partner for their involvement, which led to highs in the form of Giro d'Italia and Tour de France GC top 5 results.

Negotiations with a new partner have been proceeding for awhile now, and we are confident to finalize the deal later this week. Stick around for more updates.

General message
UCI has granted several teams permission to race with their brand new shirt. Starting from La Vuelta, among others Team Jumbo-Visma, Lotto Soudal and Deceuninck - Quick Step can show off their designers' work.

Some teams has even changed names. First of all McLaren replaces Merida as Bahrain's secondary name sponsor, and with the addition of CCU, a Chile-based beverage producer, Ruralvía will be known as Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team (RUC) from now on. Their new jersey can be found below:

Spoiler
i.imgur.com/VVjDy6k.png

Corendus-Circus has become Alpecin-Fenix, the former Nippo-Vini Fantini is now Colpack-Ballan and you get to say Vini Zabu - KTM now instead of Neri Sottoli.

As BMC, Katusha-Alpecin and the Asian Utsunomiya Blitzen team will fold at the end of the year, the respective licences have been awarded to Black Spoke Cycling Academy, Swiss Cycling Academy and the new Paraguayan Massi Vivo Conecta project. All new cycling teams will join the Continental circuit as from next year.

Thank you! I had been longing for a Caja jersey in the spirit of the 2020 one and thought of La Vuelta to be the ideal time for other team changes too. Smile

Hamburg was raced during the first week of La Vuelta but as I want to focus on the GT action later, I'll put up this small report first:

Vattenfall Cyclassics (1.UWT) i.imgur.com/OXwpbMJ.png
Hamburg, 219.5 kms
i.imgur.com/R5dIrQJ.png

The Vattenfall Cyclassics traditionally had a startlist stacked with sprinters, who were all hoping to bag a WT win after surviving the Waseberg ascents.

i.imgur.com/1aN08Fp.png

After a long chase for the breakaway in atrocious conditions, INEOS' Ian Stannard launched an attack. While he was fighting for a slim advantage, our train for Barbero came to the front.

i.imgur.com/bLrHn1i.png

By the time Stannard was about to get reeled in just outside the last kilometer, our train was free again after being boxed in for a second. ColoQuick's Danny Van Poppel started the mass sprint with a head start.

i.imgur.com/cqYa08P.png

Gaviria caught up with the Dutchman swiftly. He had a much harder time holding off Baska, but back to back wins for the Colombian it was.

Barbero's modest form showed as he couldn't do better than 8th despite a good starting position.

Sorta retrospective reply as I’we been unable to follow for a while:

Over the top stage 5 in Burgos! Stage win by Eder Chávarri with also Izagirre moving a step up at the podium. Thrilling close race right up to the finish.
Nice with the Pasil de Rozavientos link detail (though old men with glasses like me would appreciate something like that in bold as I found it only in my 2nd read through

Tour de Pologne …….we knew that

Eneco Tour was a strange race was it not? had a feeling that some ” was lost here and there maybe just due to bad daily form and the fact that Oliveira was 2nd leader, and yupti a turn-around at stage 7 with Oliveira doing everything right and he end up 3rd in overall GC…….but in hindsight he could have won?

Zottegem with a nice podium too

Vattenfall always ok with a top 10, don’t know if you expected more.

Congratz with new sponser/jersey and good luck in the last GT

Could be! Our lineup is sort of a Movistar like trident with three men trying to hit peak form from the second week. The easiest thing would be if any of them three loses significant time already in week 1.

Looks like the Yates brothers are GC favourites in a GT for the first time in this save, partly due to Kelderman's absence. Adam should be fresher not having raced Le Tour, but apart from that they're almost equally strong.

Pardo is Spain's best climber atm, and with Dowsett's help he could definitely be one to look out for.

Thanks for taking the time to write your thoughts on each and every race. I'll remember to add climb profiles in reports written after today.

Other than that, I can't add much more. Vattenfall was not as good as last year, but Barbero's had a very strong Tour and fatigue is taking its toll right now.
Eneco was almost a non-race from us if not for that last stage. In hindsight we could've worked for Nelson on the Ardennes stage but who knows if he would have gotten in that breakaway then...

We couldn't kick off our Vuelta any better. In the streets of Pamplona, the city home to the world famous San Fermín festival.

Just like during the renowned encierro a group of bulls stormed forward, this time to a (simulated) TTT win. It was home rider Eder Chávarri who crossed the line first.

Stage two saw Chávarri start in red and Campos wear white. Afterwards, CCC's Yannick Martinez secured the first mountain jersey.

Once the break had been caught, a mass sprint took place in the misty streets of Viana. We were not in the mix at all, as Michael Matthews was the strongest after a bumpy finale.

Top finisher Battaglin moved into red, Vandenborre took white from Campos.

Stage 3 had its finish near the Arrate Sanctuary, which is usually known for hosting País Vasco stages.

Mühlberger, Dan Martin and Wellens took us and the others by surprise with an attack before the start of the actual climb. We wouldn't be able to make up for it anymore.

i.imgur.com/QGnDFAU.png

After Dan Martin had been dropped on the way up, the other two sprinted for the stage. Austria's champion and former Lombardia winner Mühlberger was faster than Wellens and moved into red too.

Our top finishers all lost a chunck of time of this climb; it doesn't really suit any of them.

Team INEOS controlled the pace all day logn on day four, as the bunch neared the final climb to Valdezcaray.

i.imgur.com/WyCPeUt.png
i.imgur.com/dfzSa1b.png

Red jersey Mühlberger's acceleration was the first. Wellens followed and Fernández bridged later. The last to join was Bora's Simon Yates. He did so just to leave the other three stranded inside the last kilometer. Yates would move into the red jersey by one mere second.

i.imgur.com/Eh5hTAt.png

Our three leaders all couldn't do better than crossing the line in a fourth group. Guerreiro was the top finisher in 10th place. The three of them slipped towards the edge of the GC top 10.

The fifth, circuit stage around La Rioja's capital city Logroño would change the course of our Vuelta drastically. Before that, Zardini wasn't allowed to join the breakaway for us on a stage he had targeted.

i.imgur.com/VrFWD5r.png

Furthermore it was a high-pace ride because of the escapees' strength; rouleurs like Roelandts, Malori and Guarnieri had to be reeled in.

On the final lap, Vandenborre paid for having a bad day. Chávarri, who was very unlikely to fight for a decent GC spot after doing so already at Le Tour, suffered the very same fate.

i.imgur.com/gJneAl5.png

Once Roelandts had been caught inside the last 600 meters, it was Ireland's champion Sam Bennett who claimed his 8th Grand Tour stage win after a close sprint.

On stage 6, we saw another BOTD that would become a vain attempt go get anything more than some time on camera.

i.imgur.com/TBGasWs.png

Vandenborre had an even worse day, and let go willingly along with Chávarri, even before the final climb (Fuerte de Rapitán). Initially Guerreiro held on pretty well, but his lack of an acceleration cost him when a group of seven broke clear.

i.imgur.com/BpJHzvJ.png

Grmay lost contact with the leaders, who sprinted for the stage win. Red jersey Simon Yates was beaten by his twin brother Adam, who passed teammate Mühlberger in the standings.

Ruben lost time, but he did manage to cross the line with the chasers. A provisional 8th is quite an honest representation of his race so far.

Rough couple of days after the TTT, but Guerreiro is still hanging in there. And like Ripley said, Vandenborre could be looking at a few good days in breakaways - if his bad days don't continue.

The first week was always going to be about losing as few time as possible for our three potential team captains. Now that we have but one, migth make room for some other personal goals if they find the right legs.

A new flat stage, a new day we were just looking to stay out of trouble; especially after Cortes had lost contact with the breakaway.

The other escapees couldn't hang on either. In the end it was Caleb Ewan who secured the biggest win of his season by outsprinting Kittel and Coquard.

The day after was a new test for the GC contenders, with a stage ending on Collada de la Gallina in Andorra.

i.imgur.com/rGRjoEx.png

With the break over, it was Gregor Mühlberger who made a move on the last slopes of Puerto de la Comella, the penultimate climb. Guerreiro still sat in the reduced group Mühlberger had jumped from.

i.imgur.com/4MCJmFo.png

The Austrian already fell back before the final climb, where Ruben kept his own pace when the likes of Fernández and Simon Yates launched an early attack.

i.imgur.com/jOM2LHp.png

Fernández just wasn't feeling his legs and dropped the red jersey well before the line. The time gap he opened in the remaining meters was just impressive, and more than big enough to move into red.

i.imgur.com/2JvqYHb.png

Ruben's best day so far ended with him finishing only behind Fernández and Simon Yates. Way behind them though, but he did jump from 8th to 6th in the GC. Mühlberger blew up completely after his earlier attack and became the biggest loser of the day.

Battaglin joined the break of the day on stage 9, but had already been dropped from it by the time the riders reached the decisive zone in Barcelona.

i.imgur.com/IUwT8kt.png

Guerreiro accelerated on the famous short Montjuïc climb, where he created a gap. With only two escapees left out there, he could still dream of the stage win.

i.imgur.com/9X0T3g4.png
i.imgur.com/T3sSmgC.png

Simon Clarke had too much left to be caught by Ruben though. Mühlberger, who bounced back great after yesterday's disappointing showing, and van der Poel would pass our man too. Clarke held on for his second ever Vuelta stage win, eight years after he outsprinted Tony Martin on the real life 2012 stage to Valdezcaray.

No bonus seconds as Ruben came fourth, but the time gained on the others did suffice to set foot on the virtual GC podium.

After 166 uneventful kilometers, Marcel Kittel's long-stretched sprint ended just a tad too soon, as Elia Vivani snatched his first win since Oman on the line. Ruben happily finished in the middle of the bunch.
