After six consecutive seasons as a part of the C1 calendar, the Tour of Eritrea moves down to C2HC level and will feature the best Mo/Hi riders of the Continental division in a battle for the win. Two time (2015 and 2017), and only one to do so, former winner Kwiatkowski, is in the startlist once again, and will be hoping to extend his domination in this race. No other former winners are on the start list this time. To be fair, this race is tailor-made for a rider with the capabilities of the Pole, and he will be among the top favourites once again. However, the competition is fierce, and a lot of the better climbers have made the trip, expecting Stage 3 to be the Queen stage, which is not an unfair assessment. Stages 4 and 6 are two stages that should favour the punchers. However, it remains to be seen if the pure punchers can limit their losses on the tough Stage 3. Stages 1, 2 and 5 are ones that the sprinters will enjoy.
| MON | HIL | STA | RES | REC | ACC | Pinot | 80 | 74 | 76 | 79 | 75 | 69 | Kwiatkowski | 78 | 79 | 74 | 76 | 75 | 75 | Valls | 79 | 75 | 78 | 77 | 78 | 72 | Kiserlovski | 79 | 74 | 71 | 74 | 72 | 65 | Elissonde | 78 | 73 | 76 | 77 | 79 | 66 | Chaves | 76 | 79 | 74 | 73 | 72 | 72 | Squire | 77 | 77 | 70 | 70 | 76 | 71 | Panayotov | 78 | 72 | 71 | 76 | 73 | 72 | Giogieri | 78 | 73 | 71 | 74 | 70 | 67 | Cort Nielsen | 77 | 74 | 76 | 75 | 74 | 71 | Faiers | 78 | 71 | 75 | 75 | 78 | 73 | Borisavljevic | 77 | 73 | 74 | 74 | 75 | 65 | Nibali | 78 | 73 | 72 | 71 | 67 | 53 | Vinhas | 79 | 69 | 72 | 73 | 70 | 60 | Campero | 78 | 70 | 75 | 70 | 72 | 71 |
The already mentioned Kwiatkowski starts as one of the top favourites for the win in this race. He is the best puncher in the race and among the Top 6 climbers, boasting credentials more relevant than perhaps anyone else for this circuit.
However, Thibaut Pinot's superior climbing prowess, he is clearly the best climber in this race, could prove to be the difference. He will definitely be targeting Stage 3 as the place to make his mark, and look to get a big enough lead that he can protect across the later hilly stages.
Rafael Valls is no slouch in a race like this despite his only previous appearance only resulting in a 10th place finish. He is a genuine podium contender this time around, and should be one the outside shots to win the race.
The rider who'll perhaps be most dependent on the hilly stages to challenge for the win is Chaves. He has been having an excellent season so far, and will be hoping to continue in the same vein. He has teammate Squire as backup and potential co-leader, as the latter is equally good, if a little weaker, on both decisive terrains.
Kiserlovski, Elisssonde, Panayatov and Giogieri are all strong climbers, and will be looking to perform well on Stage 3 and achieve a Top 5 placing. Kiserlovski is the best climber in this group but Elissonde is by far the best in terms of energy stats.
Cort Nielsen and Faiers are two riders who'll be hoping to make use of their higher backups stats to complement their climbing.
Euskaltel with Borisavljevic and Nibali make a strong case for a double Top 10 GC push.
| MON | HIL | STA | RES | REC | ACC | Pinot | 80 | 74 | 76 | 79 | 75 | 69 | Valls | 79 | 75 | 78 | 77 | 78 | 72 | Kiserlovski | 79 | 74 | 71 | 74 | 72 | 65 | Vinhas | 79 | 69 | 72 | 73 | 70 | 60 | Elissonde | 78 | 73 | 76 | 77 | 79 | 66 | Kwiatkowski | 78 | 79 | 74 | 76 | 75 | 75 | Panayotov | 78 | 72 | 71 | 76 | 73 | 72 | Faiers | 78 | 71 | 75 | 75 | 78 | 73 | Giogieri | 78 | 73 | 71 | 74 | 70 | 67 | Signorini | 78 | 69 | 66 | 72 | 73 | 74 | Nibali | 78 | 73 | 72 | 71 | 67 | 53 | Campero | 78 | 70 | 75 | 70 | 72 | 71 |
As already mentioned, Pinot is the best climber in the field. Valls is the next best, with his backups likely to prove extremely useful on the climbs.
| MON | HIL | STA | RES | REC | ACC | Kwiatkowski | 78 | 79 | 74 | 76 | 75 | 75 | Chaves | 76 | 79 | 74 | 73 | 72 | 72 | Mehr-Wenige | 66 | 78 | 74 | 69 | 73 | 67 | Roux | 65 | 78 | 78 | 71 | 70 | 75 | Squire | 77 | 77 | 70 | 70 | 76 | 71 | Hategeka | 72 | 77 | 74 | 69 | 68 | 66 | Diggle | 65 | 77 | 74 | 70 | 70 | 70 | Pellaud | 65 | 77 | 74 | 68 | 71 | 70 | Lejman | 65 | 77 | 72 | 64 | 63 | 68 | Besada | 63 | 77 | 74 | 74 | 64 | 77 |
Kwiatkowski and Chaves are the best punchers in the field, with Kwiatkowski's superior climbing skills and backups perhaps giving him an edge. A lot of faces among the stronger punchers who are not GC contenders. The likes of Mehr-Wenige and Roux start as favourites for the hilly Stages 4 and 6. They will need to perform well above expectations on Stage 3 to have any chance of a high GC placing though. Contrarily, Squire is someone who should have decent GC ambitions from this group, behind the powerful duo at the top.
| FLA | SPR | ACC | Guillen | 67 | 81 | 82 | Carsi | 70 | 80 | 82 | Krieger | 71 | 79 | 79 | Boivin | 74 | 79 | 80 | Vingerling | 71 | 79 | 79 | Awang | 64 | 79 | 83 | Altanzul | 72 | 78 | 75 | Young | 74 | 78 | 77 | Fonseca | 74 | 78 | 77 | Yamamoto | 72 | 78 | 78 | Cisse | 74 | 78 | 77 | Vaquera | 71 | 78 | 80 | Sobota | 72 | 78 | 78 |
Three sprint stages, and Guillen is the strongest sprinter lining up for this race. One is never sure what to expect from him, but he has become more consistent recently and will hope to continue the trend.
Carsi is similar in mould to Guillen and will be hoping to come away with a win or two. Krieger, Boivin and Vingerling are all strong contenders in a tight sprint field like this one. Watch out for Awang's monster acceleration to kick in at the end, especially in the first two stages.

Im calling it right now, Mehr-Wenige will go for the breaks and mess my whole plan up.
In the sprints, Carsi will not get a train and start every sprint from like the 14th position and we will get lucky with a top 10 result on one of the stages.
Here we go..
Good luck all

Should be an interesting race. I’m hoping for at least a top 10 and some good results on the flat days from Alranzul.
Good luck everyone!

I don't have too much hope that Nibali will carry his fine form into this one but you never know what he's capable of and a Top 5 can't be out of the question here. With Borisavljevic, we should add the depth points too.
Fonseca here for the sprints in what is a relatively weak field so be should show himself in the Top 10 a few times.

we basically only sent Awang here, looks like a good decision not to send Intxausti

Pinot should be a clear winner as that climb is soooo long, but many good riders here so anyone of the first 4-5 on the list could take it. Will be interesting to see if this is a one stage race, or the hill stages will have an impact on the final GC.

I expect from a GC perspective this is Pinot's to lose, especially with elite support from Vinhas. The question may be more about those runners up placings which can get more chaotic and hopefully be determined by the hilly stages as well.
Looking for really solid all-round performances form both Chaves and Squire this race.

Hoping for Krieger to snatch a top three on a stage. Giogieri and Pavlic can go either way.

A good try in the break for Orue, but that didn't go well, however a 3rd place from my man Vaquera is a fantastic way to start the race!

Slightly mistimed by Awang, but that's a point for us, 0 pointer avoided

Well, having our leadout on P5 is great. Having our sprinter on P9 isn't. But it's somewhat Guillén-like, can't expect consistently good results for no money. Still hoping for some better results, though.
But Cissé's putting together a rather decent job application for next year...
Congrats to Krieger for another great result (still rather inexplicable to me, but PCM 18 definitely has its own rules...), and thanks for the report.

congratz to hillis, Mustafa Carsi very consistent, and also to Azerbaijan
with the win yesterday.
Good to see the split not hurting the GC (as far as I could tell) thanks for nice reports

Disappointing first stage from Fonseca but very happy with 2nd on stage 2! He's definitely not the best sprinter but I'll happily take a 2nd on a stage from him.

Pretty crazy how strong Nibali has been so far this season as he pushes the best in the division all the way to a very strong 2nd place from the Veteran on the stage. I think some of his success is thanks to the work of Fernandez (18th on the stage) and Borisavljevic (almost Top 10 and leads U25). Hoping he can maintain a strong GC and maybe even put Pinot into some trouble.

Carsi from heaven to hell in just 1 day... Haha.
Very pleased with a 2nd and a 1st. Too bad he won't be there for the last sprinter stage.
Now Vingerling can show what he is made off, and Dietmar as well.
Congratz to Pinot and the_hoyle on the win aswell

Awesome day for us with Bravo taking the KoM lead, a good day for him as his pure punchuer ability worked great for the early climbs. Then a day for Chaves to only lose 30" on a stage he could have lost minutes. Two good days on the punchy terrain could see him move up pretty easily.
Grats to Pinot on the victory we all expected, now can he hold on.

Faiers coming third saving an absolutely dreadful race so far. It's actually incredible that the game doesn't recognize the sprinting ability of Boivin just because Faiers is present. Thanks for the reports.
