Here's a place to discuss the awards for real-world cycling achievements, it's a good place to remind people of a particular awesome GT stage you think should be GT Stage of the Year or discuss whether or not your favourite Slovenian Skijumper/Stage Racer had the best season of all. It's a long cycling season, so this is the place to discuss the year in it's entirety so everybody can determine which cyclist, team or race really is deserving of a prestigious Daily award. The awards are listed below or in the main awards discussion thread:
Spoiler Rider of the Year
Surprise (Rider) of the Year
Team of the Year
Grand Tour of the Year (Nominations not necessary)
Grand Tour Stage of the Year
WT Stage Race of the Year
Non-WT Stage Race of the Year
Stage (non-GT) of the Year
WT Classic of the Year
Non-WT Classic of the Year
The cycling awards are the ones that generally get the most attention in the voting phase, but because the nomination phase might be tougher for most, they actually get the least nominations. This thread serves as a way to brush up everyone's memory about what happened during the 2019 calendar year.
What you can do in this thread:
- Mention any particular that you think was worth remembering about the 2019 cycling season: specifically, you can post info about particularly worthy races that you think might have been overlooked, riders that had special seasons etc.
What you can not do in this thread:
- Go off-topic. This thread is strictly dedicated to the cycling awards. If you want to discuss other awards, you're encouraged to do so in the main thread:
- Argue about why you think something another user proposed is not even worth nominating;
- Officially nominate something. That should still be done via a PM sent to Croatia14 as instructed in the main awards information thread. |

The lack of talks in here means that Martin Laas will win Rider of the Year anyway as I'm the only one nominating right?

Not really. Personally, I wanted to say a few impressions, but I was afraid to fall under the "no nominations here" rule.

That's no help, a season usually goes by in a blur and I qickly forget the specifics. And on the other hand there were so many "surprise" riders, so many young riders who excelled, I really couldn't decide whom to pick. Also, who on earth is Martin Laas?

In fact I would've never guessed that he'd ride WT some day but he signed with Bora for 2020!

I was as surprised as yourself.

The year 2019 will be remembered as the year of the youngster.

My 2 cents on the last year in cycling:
We had the most entertaining Tour de France in years (the most entertaining since 2011);
MvDP, Julien Allaphillippe, Thibaut Pinot, Fulgsang, Pogacar, Deceunick (as a team), and EF1 (as a team) were the main providers of suspense, action, entertainment, and quality cycling.
Bernal and Roglic were probably the strongest, however, sometimes painfully (and boring) to watch.
Dumoulin, Porte, Mitchelton (as a team), and Gaviria would be the main disappointments.
I loved the high number of good sprinters, I love when is no one-man show.
I did not love the Giro (the first stages were boring and during the latter stages we waited for an attack that never came).
Overall, I would say that it was a good year.

I disagree that the Giro was boring. Problem was that Rogla was sick and crashed and Nibali focussed too much on that.
I disagree on the Tour assessment. I did not like it too much, there was too few really interesting stages. Having Alaphilippe contending for so long showing that there was not enough climbing at the Tour imo. Pinot would've been a feel-good story though.
Yeah it seems like we have 4 sprinters at the top, with Bennett, Ackermann, Groenewegen and Ewan being faster (Viviani, Sagan,...) or fitter (Gaviria,...) than all others. |

The design of the race was flawed as well, with very few interest for the first stages

It was one of the few GT in the last years where until the 19th stage we were not sure who was going to win.

Yeah, I loved that.

A few thoughts from my nominations:
Rider of the year: Caleb Ewan, estalbished himself as the king of the new generations of sprinters in the TDF.
GT Stage: Giro S13 where Roglic and Nibali watch him ride away. Love that stage as a classic illustration of cycling chess. Could have chose S14 which he won but S13 is the one that sticks with me.
On the Giro vs Tour argument - I think the Tour was better but the way the last two stages were ruined kind of spoiled it for me. Plus Allaphillipe cracking was inevitable.
Surprise of the year - Pogacar, I think we knew how good Bernal would be but Pogacar not so much.

I don't think he is faster than Ackermann or Bennett, and he's definitely not faster than Groenewegen. |

None of them will let me vote. They all say 1 vote and that the results are hidden?

Ineed, we are trying to fix it atm. Sorry for the inconvenience. We didn't find a quick solution yet.
