First WT race of the season and a first chance for many riders after a team change.
Unfortunately some bad news already as Kiwi Patrick Bevin, who was one of last years TdU stars, had to abandon pre race due to heart issues. Despite being in Australia, the team is able to replace him by Guillaume Van Keirsbulck.

A bit different stage order in 2020 with Willunga Hill being on the ultimate day, Paracombe a semi hill top finish on day 3 and the still sprinter friendly Stirling uphill finish on the 2nd being the GC stages, while all others might be for the regular sprinters.

Daryl Impey with a nice run lately, having a great form early on with Mitchelton, while Porte is the one, that still dominates Willunga Hill.
As both are here again, chances are good, we might see them keep their series alive.

Obviously this thread is also good for the discussion of the women editon, which already starts this week as also the men`s criterium, former People Choice Classic, which apparently now is called Schwalbe Classic. |

Bevin’s heart issues give me heart issues
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Personally, I would like a change this year, although besides Mitchelton, as a team, and the other Australians in the peloton, most of the riders see the race as a warm-up.

That's always going to be the case given it's time in the calendar. Who else is going to aim to peak for the TDU in the middle of January, other than Aussie's who have also got the National Champs?
If they want to attract a better field they need to move the race to another time of the year. Surely Australia is relatively temperate enough for the race and National Champs to be held in March/April or September/October.
Given it's geographical location they couldn't move it to the European Summer time as who would want to go all the way to Australia in the middle of the season?
So in conclusion, as long as the race remains in January, it's always going to be a glorified training camp for most teams, as are all the middle eastern races in February.

I would rather have more races in Australia in February.

Fantastic racing already. Ewan a class above everybody though. Halvorsen waited too long, he should've at least tried to jump Ewans slipstream, same for Viviani who didn't look a lot stronger than Consonni tbh.

Morkov with the monster leadout but Bennett couldn`t finish it as Ewan clearly is the fastest this early in the season.
Poor FDJ, doing all this effort in the end but easily don`t have the kind of sprinter for such a fast finish then.
And good to see Greipel being back in form again. Last year`s illnesses never saw him in good form unfortunately but I guess Isreal will see some nice results by him this year. |

Porte on Willunga Hill is pretty impressive year for year.
You always know he will go but still are impressed, how good he then is.
Yates, who was next strongest tries to follow, which then leads to a total crack for him, which once more shows how fast Porte goes up the hill.
Towards the end, he seems to regularly lose the pace a bit once the gaps are open as the gaps behind to those steady climbers is rather low then and also the break riders could follow.
Impressive win by Holmes. Not many can say to beat the yearly dominator, while he is having a great ride. Came quite unexpected to be honest.
Smart riding by Ulissi/Geschke here to get a surprising GC podium, but you just don`t follow Porte on that hill.
Van Baarle remains improving step by step with Ineos. Kind of their hill/cobble expert these days.
Also great ride by Impey actually. Not as strong as last year but seeing how early he struggled and lost contact, he then had a great ride up by himself to still finish with such small time gap, remaining a decent GC.
Bad leg day for Power. Really had a shot there today but struggled hugely here. |

Weirdest climb to Willunga ever. Porte will be 50 and still winning/being the first of the peloton at the summit.
Pity for Robert Power, still hoping for that breakthrough... |
