Exactly, wouldn't have gotten that sponsor goal any other way.

Tour de Pologne (2.UWT) Stage 1/7, 177.9 kms
Part 1 of the Italian diptych in this year's Tour de Pologne. Madonna di Campiglio has hostedGiro stage finishes, yet the spectators will have to settle for a field with a few less big guns.
In awful conditions, the peloton kept riding until the initial break of five was down to these two riders: ColoQuick's Sven Flå and Bora's Roland Thalmann. Not being gifted climbers, chances of this break making it to the line were slim.
After the two had been swept up on the non-labeled climb already, the pack tackled a very slippery descent. Multiple riders, i.a. Sebastian Henao, hit the tarmac. After some riders had been forced to abandon, FDJ's Fabien Grellier attacked.
The Frenchman's attempt didn't last long either because, as it's usual by now, Bahrain threw down their first hammer. After the first cat.2 climb, the pack only counted 35 riders.
The men of Bahrain kept doing their thing on the second climb, Passo Duron as even more riders were dropped from the first group. Guerreiro and Caicedo were the only ones left for us.
On the ultimate climb to Madonna di Campiglio, Guerreiro had to let go early. It sure is hard sometimes to shift from training rides to actual racing.
The good old INEOS train shattered the field going up on the climb. In the final kilometer, the 8-man lead group was reduced to four. INEOS' Adam Yates won a thrilling sprint ahead of Power, Kennaugh and Morton.
Ruben couldn't do better than an 18th place today.

Had some doubts about starting him on WT level this soon, but Burgos started only one day later and I took the risk. Might've been a mistake with two brutal mountain stages to start with.

Vuelta a Burgos (2.HC) Stage 1/5, 164.5 kms
Stage 1 didn't seem too hard. Only the Portillo del Busto climb could make for a different outcome than a mass sprint finish.
On its slopes, the breakaway was shattered. Prades and Bacon were dropped, and Angarita won the KoM sprint.
Over the top, a Movistar trio had opened up a gap. It was just our Ion Izagirre with them as they caught up with one of the escapees.
A merge with the chasing group let some 20 riders catch up again, including Ednaldo Luiz Cortes. Chávarri, Vandenborre and Barbero were all missing from this group. With 30 kms left, the last of the escapees got reeled in.
Our Brazilian champion Cortes tried an attack once some had already failed to go clear. As opposed to them, he did open up a gap.
His situation remained promising but the final kilometer at 7% could be a nasty one. Behind Cortes' back, the chasers upped the pace.
Cortes did keep something back for the last hectometers, yet he might have started his sprint a little late. Quentin Pacher, who has a thing for this kind of finishes, beat him in the last 50 meters. Cortes came second, Izagirre fourth.

Second and final act of Tour de Pologne passing in Italy this year. Today's stage is probably even tougher than yesterday's, as it features three cat.1 climbs.
Sebastian Henao was definitely the best-known name in the breakaway group. Larrinaga, Fla, Williams and Casse all were weaker climbers too.
This would show on the first climb of the day, Passo Pampeago, where Henao ripped the group apart. It was Charles Casse who followed the longest, but Henao was on his own before the top.
As the pace in the pack wasn't too high, Sebastian also came first atop Passo Costalunga.
The gap came down quickly on the descent towards the final climb. Henao's journey was over with still 20 kilometers to go.
Guerreiro and Caicedo didn't last long when the pace got upped even more on Passo Pordoi. Right when they were dropped, Mikel Landa attacked the yellow jersey with Rob Power. Race leader Adam Yates and Miguel Angel Lopez would resist their offensive.
The man in the yellow jersey left the other three stranded inside the last kilometer with one of his famous late accelerations. He'll be full of confidence for the stages that still await the riders in Poland.
Guerreiro finished in 24th and remains our best man in the overall standings.

Haven't checked in for a while, so a late congrats on a great Tour! Rough results in Poland right now, but Burgos seems to provide a nice contrast.
Still loving the visuals here btw And small details like the links to the mountain profiles.

Late congrats are definitely equally appreciated, and thanks for the the kind word and for stopping by! Poland's been tough as it's always been one of my least fruitful races in a country I truly love.
Burgos, on the other hand, is an important race for the sponsors so we tend to thrive closer to home.

Really thought Cortes had it . Good to see some better results than in Poland, but as stated above, I've never really done well in terms of GC. Hopefully we will show something in one of the other classifications.

Vuelta a Burgos (2.HC) Stage 2/5, 140.2 kms
Stage two was very similar to the first, as it ended with another finish on a small bump.
The break was over before the KoM sprint, which came at the first passing of the finish line. That's where Carlos Verona attacked, one of the few riders who came home within the reduced pack yesterday.
As opposed to yesterday, the sole leader resisted the comeback of the pack. Verona's win made him move very close to the new overall leader, Jairo Noria. Because of Barbero's and Izagirre's strong sprints, the entire top four of the stage consisted of riders that will defend our team's colors next year.

Tour de Pologne (2.UWT)
Stage 3 :: 226.1 kms
No mercy for the riders with two tough mountain stages under their belt, as a long stage was what followed at the back of a transfer from northern Italy. Over more than 220 kms, the bunch was taken from Krakow to Rzeszow, two places that are the capital cities of their respective voivodeships.
These four - Edmondson, Casse, Fernandez and Estrada - were allowed to ride out front for a while, until a wild chase started some 20 kilometers before the KoM climb. Lots of riders got caught in the crosswinds. Ruben, who's still in quite bad form, just about held on as the pack entered the streets of Rzeszow.
After a chaotic sprint, Asbjorn Kragh Andersen upset the home crowd by beating Poland's Pawel Franczak and sprint talent Bill Fraser. Ruben was the final rider to finish in the same time and moved from 18th to 16th in the GC.

Day 4 featured another unnecessarily long stages to one of Poland's major cities, Katowice this time. The short bump on the local circuit could definitely cause some
Estrada joined the BOTD again, this time along with Thalmann and Janse Van Rensburg.
Thalmann and Janse Van Rensburg would last until the very last lap. Right when the two of them were caught, Ruben Guerreiro was involved in a crash. As if this race wasn't disastrous enough already for us.
Tosh Van der Sande landed one of his rare wins as he blew away the Polish-born Italian sprinter Mareczko and Elia Viviani.
Ruben lost almost 6 minutes and dropped from 16th to 19th in the overall standings.

I'm getting more credit than I deserve now, I'm afraid. Even on this downhill course and with an in-shape team, I couldn't get a realistic result so I simulated the stage. Good for the overall though! |

Time for the traditional stage in and around Zakopane, Poland's main Tatra ski resort. After all the climbing that's already been done back in Italy, the peloton might take it a little easier with two more key stages to come.
Sebastian Henao joined a breakaway of six in order to force overall leader Yates out of the pink mountain jersey.
Three of them made it the last of the local laps: Jesse Sergent, Nello De Battisti
and Alexander Edmondson. As can be seen in the far background, Sebastian Henao had been dropped and would have to leave the jersey to Edmondson.
Much to our and his own surprise, Ruben kept up with the bunch quite well.
Jesse Sergent used to final bump to get rid of his two companions. This WT stage win was his first non-New Zealand NC ITT victory since 2014.
Guerreiro sat at the right side of a split that occured on the same final bump that Sergent had attacked on. Finishing in the first GC group made him gain time on some riders but he couldn't improve his overall spot.
