Tour Down Under - Stage 6
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0001.jpg

The GC fight couldn`t be closer and surprisingly that much towards the sprinters!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier is in the lead and often post Willunga, this was a safe win.
Not so in 2019 as too many riders are within range.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Degenkolb just 1s off, which is like finishing in the top10 and passing Gautier really on a stage, where you are the favourite!
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri need a few more bonus seconds but also with a win could take the GC win still.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0197.jpg

Valio in the end surely hopes for a breakaway win today. Easiest to defend the lead.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Gate being the sole leader right now in a very fast start. Behind him though more riders:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Allonca
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Ballesteros
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Sibilla
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Vincent
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Yamamoto
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Sosa

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0208.jpg

20km and with the first riders to be dropped from the break, the gap also melts. Just 45s left and it`s not looking good for Valio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0210.jpg

As said, Valio won`t work today. But surprisingly also Iberia isn`t working here.
Instead it`s mainly CT team McCormick seeing the chance for Holloway. Also Delvaux with 2 riders for Guarnieri, who has the smallest chances. And then Europcar as Lo Cicero still wants the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0213.jpg

3.5km to go and the break was caught some time ago. The positioning of Iberia though is not ideal. 2 riders ahead in decent positions but Degenkolb in the middle a bit blocked. Next to him Guarnieri as well. Lo Cicero even behind them.
Only top GC rider in a good position is Holloway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0220.jpg

Nasty move. Just when Degenkolb wanted to move forward, Sweeting has finished his job of pacing for Holloway and now moves ahead of the top sprinter and slows down. Huge blocking there and just passing Gautier, who also is not in a position to sprint for bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0223.jpg

In front lots of Delvaux leadout riders as also Europcar helpers but the first real sprinter is Holloway on the left behind Manamalage.

Lo Cicero`s leadout Matthews, Modolo, Lay next to him waiting for their leader.

Behind Borges tries to find a sprint position. Seeing Degenkolb, Gautier struggling, he is another rider, that could take profit today.

Guarnieri though also moving up forward with Vantomme next to him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0231.jpg

Holloway still in the best position getting a leadout by Delvaux/Europcar now.

Behind Borges, Guarnieri, Vantomme, Vanderbiest, Flügel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0236.jpg

Vanderbiest has waited long until starting his sprint and goes into the lead with 800m to go followed by Vantomme and Borges.

Holloway a bit "blocked" now by Lobato but the Spaniard is sprinting, not waiting.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0239.jpg

And there is a small gap, where the US rider seems to go through.
400m left only. Next to him Borges with an impressive sprint, Aberasturi and Guarnieri behind and also Enger not far off.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0243.jpg

200m and Holloway is in the lead followed by Borges. Two riders aiming big here trying to not only get the stage but also the GC win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0245.jpg

Holloway though the one making it! Big stage win for him and is it the GC as well?

Guarnieri in 2nd with a late jump. Not enough for the GC but he might improve as well. Modolo out of nowhere in 3rd ahead of Borges, who still has gained some seconds today.
Enger 5th and no more GC seconds for GC riders afterwards.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_06_PCM0247.jpg

Degenkolb totally failed today. Parts due to bad team organization in the sprint preperation but parts also due to Sweeting blocking him extremely. Holloways`s win here with some bitter taste surely.

GC wise this indeed means the title for Holloway! Borges just 5s off in 2nd. Great result for both.
Gautier drops down to 3rd followed by Degenkolb. All within 10s though and Guarnieri as 5th also just +11s ahead of Edmondson, who also had a good race here.

Last but not least bad news for Desigual. Not sure how and when. But apparently there were gaps in the sprint and their riders are in group 2. Not sure if one was dropped and others waited or all were simply in the later field. But Zabel and Yates lose their top15-20 position this way droping down to the top50 only.

Team:
Kulczyk and Valio were always up there in the first groups and did beat Delvaux by tiny 4s.
In direct comparison Kulczyk takes the win by just a little bit as their stage positions in especially on day 1 were key for the win.
