Day 1 in Down Under should see a sprint finish here. The terrain is rather hilly at times and in especially the breakaway selection could lead to some problems for several riders while also the late climb could cause sprinters to drop back, if there skills on fast raced hills aren`t the best.

Bookies make it easy and go according pure sprint strength, which means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Degenkolb vs pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Lo Cicero vs pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri.
Only exception is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Houle being rated higher than some other sprinters due to their excellent backups in high flat and also decent to good hill skills.

5 riders in the break of the day and while no Aussie is in there, the home amateur team made it and surprisingly two Cypriots.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Miltiadis

and after some longer solo chase pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Sibilla

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_01_PCM0011.jpg

Those five also sprint out the first bonus seconds with 111km to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Sibilla closely outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Christodoulos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Dewulf.

Behind in the peloton it`s easy to see, which teams are positive to have chances today.
Iberia for Degenkolb is no surprise at all and Europcar for Lo Cicero and Delvaux for Guarnieri neither.
The others are Desigual for Zabel, Duolingo already GC wise for Borges and BNZ for Von Hoff?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_01_PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rho.png Spengler takes sprint no.2 with 40km to go. Behind him Sibilla and Miltiadis.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_01_PCM0027.jpg

The gap never was very big and it was 2'30 only most of the day. At least they are still allowed to take the KoM jersey home and it`s a fight of the Cypriots. In the end Jayco`s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Miltiadis is getting some early success for the amateurs and the home team being the first leader of the KoM ranking.

The gap is below 1min by now and 20km yet to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_01_PCM0034.jpg

Simply no chance if power horses such as Brockhoff, Gallego Martin and Hermans take over. So it wasn`t meant to be for the break and the last are caught with 5.5km to go.

And while the peloton is still complete with 176 riders after the climb, the high pace of Iberia/Delvaux still sees many struggle and some sprinters are at the far back, which won`t come back to participate today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_01_PCM0037.jpg

With 3km to go some chaotic sprint preperation as Europcar moved forward and ruined Iberia`s sprint position while Delvaux is on the left side of the road.

Basically all other sprinters except for Zabel are pretty badly placed behind some GC riders as well.

2km and Kreder starts an early sprint with Guarnieri behind him.

They take profit from Iberia/Europcar mixing which means it`s Merino Criado and Modolo in the better position.
Behind Degenkolb, Zabel, Lo Cicero at least try to follow while all others are further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_01_PCM0065.jpg

Under the Flamme Rouge Degenkolb is back with his leadout.

Lo Cicero and Zabel a bit further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_01_PCM0068.jpg

Degenkolb just used his pace and goes past them all. Guarnieri on the left struggles while Zabel and Lo Cicero are back in the fight as well using the German`s slipstream.

Further behind Holloway, Ciolek and others fight for the remaining bonus seconds, which are rewarded to more than the top finishers here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/TdU/mg19_tdu_01_PCM0073.jpg

Too exhausted too celebrate but Degenkolb takes it home and wins the opener! Surely work is needed on their leadout but he was the strongest today. (Correct NC to follow in future stages)

Guarnieri with some better legs towards the end over the line next ahead of Zabel and Lo Cicero only 4th followed by the leadout riders stealing important bonus seconds.

Ciolek in 8th, Holloway 9th and surprisingly Tewelde in 10th with some small advantage ahead of the next.
