Just turned the TV on. What the heck is going on? 
58 kph average in the last hour? Cross tailwind splitting the bunch? 7 QST guys in break early on? Woah! Hell of a stage!

Quintana did not look fresh at the finish at all. To win 5 mins today just to lose them tomorrow?
I expect an attack early in the final climb from him next stage, the way he did at Los Machucos and before. He is now much closer in the GC and his actions will require immediate response. |

I think Movistar was trying to eliminate Roglic's teammates to make him isolated and make him have a choice of either working or letting the gap go up to 7-8 minutes. But Astana decided otherwise as they worked for a 4th(!) place. Or at least that's what I hope they were thinking of doing. If they really chased Quintana down for Valverde then I have no words to say.

This cahese is to keep their podium hope alive. Letting Quinatana away with 4min. would mean that they wont pass him, even that Nairo current climbing form sucks. |

Movistar tried to Isolate Roglic and crack him. They played it very well in my opinion. Roglic and Astana just were strong enough to resist luckily.
Also my man Carl Frederik Hagen is riding a fantastic Vuelta which I absolutely love!

To make a long story short, but slightly longer than what Sykkel_Freak gave, he got into cycling very late. He did cross-country skiing and running, mostly cross-country running, as a teenager, and also combining them doing some winter triathlon competition as a U23 athlete, taking gold in the winter triathlon U23 world championships. That kind of tells his story in short, as he didn't specialize in anything, but enjoyed the endurance heavy sports and to challenge himself. As a 19 years old, he won the "Birkebeiner treble", and he got some attention in the national press in Norway for that, as it combines the times done in a cross-country run, a cross-country ski race and a MTB race, and he was kind of "too young" to beat all those elite amateurs in Norway aiming for it

Then, in late 2012 (autumn) he started MTB racing by coincidence, really, and decided to commit and see how far he could go. He quickly showed his talent, winning the Norwegian Cup the following two years. Thus, combined with some impressive Strava climbing times (!) on local climbs in the eastern part of Norway, he got an offer to join a Norwegian continental team (very simplified and shortened version of the story indeed ). He accepted, and he was all in for another struggle, as a newbie on the road, as his first road season was as a 24 years old, in 2015.
But he adapted, and has steadily improved, and his 2018 with the Joker team was rock solid with some brilliant performances that wasn't always rewarded with a great result, and it also came on the back of a good 2017 season, where he also proved that he had potential for the climbs, but also were solid at different terrains, as the Joker team has never done a whole lot of races suited for climbers.
So yeah, a cool story and a very late bloomer, which kind of makes sense if you consider 2015 was his first year at the road, as a 24 years old.
But obviously, having said all that, his Vuelta performance is just incredible. I'm pretty sure the Lotto Soudal staff, management and riders didn't expect such a performance, and especially not such a consistent performance day in and day out late in his GT debut

Huh, funny how some people involved in other sports (Roglic, Evenpoel, Hagen, Peraud even) show up and perform well imediatelly within the sport. I wonder how far behind is really cycling in terms of preparation... |
