Popularities
Tafiolmo
As one of the stat guys I've been tasked with the tricky job of doing popularities that we hope to have in place for the first EP for PCM2019. I've been given a brief on how they are done but this seems to be easier said in theory than in practice, with nearly all the DB team on holidays there is hardly anyone to ask, so looking for suggestions?

I'm looking for suggestions on criteria that should be used, here are some that come to mind that I want to use but there are probably more:

1) I aim to base it around winners of GT's and podiums with the Tour being the most important of course of the GT's and then the shorter tours.
2) Riders than win often like sprinters and De Gendt style stage winners
3) WC's and Monument winners followed by Classic winners
4) The importance of popular riders from the cycling core countries like France, Spain, Italy and Belgium who are usually going to be more popular than say riders from the UK, USA and Germany etc (excepting the really big names of course here)
5) Riders that are often interviewed before and after races
6) Up and coming riders like VDP and Van Aert
7) Rider personality and entertainment level
8) The importance of current results over previous results
9) National Champs
10) Rider Potentials

so a top 8 could look like this:
Alaphilippe
Sagan
Dumoulin
Froome
Valverde
Nibali
Thomas
Roglic

So looking for any suggestions or listings and then will go from there

Would say on a local level also NC winners (podiums) would be above other local riders

That's an important one and have just added it.

Thanks

I think older results needs to count a lot. Guys like Greipel, Cavendish, Gerrans and Tony Martin are still popular and quite important to their sponsors although they have poor results for the last 2-3 years. Not as important as the guys you mention, but they are still very popular and attractive for sponsors and races compared to their recent results because of their past glory.

Is popularity still linked to wage demands? I know it used to be on older PCM's, if so you need to be a little careful about not making them too high across the board as it could effect renewals/ top riders ending up without contract which used to be a problem on some DB's on older PCM's.

Obviously results count the most, but for lesser riders appearances in bigger races, e.g. wildcards at a young age, CT riders in HC races etc. would probably have a small effect too.

I would give a preference to riders with recent results but guys with a strong history should be a little higher based on the idea of them losing popularity as their results become longer ago, but are still more popular than guys that have similar results now but never reached the heights they currently have in their palmares.

Thinking of guys like Aru, T. Martin, Degenkolb, etc.

Cavendish isn't retired, he rode California in May and PCS has his next race as starting in 2 days time.

Gerrans is definitely retired though.

Best post this week!

Also to the others, plenty of good suggestions here and I am currently working on popularities and yes there is certainly an emphasis as well on older riders. Croatia commented to me just how popular riders like Greipel, Kittel and Martin are still in Germany despite being either out or on their way down over newer riders like Ackermann, Buchmann and Politt. I'm sure though that if Buchmann amazingly managed to finish on the podium at the that would change!

I guess the PCM Daily Favourite Cyclist Contest could be seen as an indicator of which riders are more popular than their results would lead you to believe too, just not sure if you want something like that to factor into it or not.
