The Froome motor...
...that was an awful stage.
I enjoyed today's stage way more than any Froome, Landis, Armstrong, Pantani fueled 'victory'. |

Also, totally different point in the race. In 2010 it was stage 20 and this year it was the first serious mountain stage.
Ax 3 was the first mountain stage in 2013 and Sky train shredded everyone to pieces on final climb. They did the same at PSM 2015.
In Giro 2017 Blockhaus on stage 9 was ridden extremely tough with pretty big time gaps for a Unipuerto stage. Covadonga in '16 Vuelta saw Quintana and Contador attacking pretty early on the final climb and decent time gaps for that climb.
Also the first mountain top finish in Giro this year was ridden much more aggressively with Mollema and Zakarin going long range Landa attacking with more than 10kms to go, Carapaz and co. attacking as well with a few kms to go leaving Nibali and Roglic playing with each other.
So, almost no racing till the final 1-2 km from the favourites is not standard, it is mostly showing that they are too afraid to gamble for the win.
Also, Schleck didn't attack often, but he attacked properly. His solo over Izoard and Galibier in '11 Tour is way more aggressive than most of these GC contenders will do in this entire Tour combined.

Team trains have to be pretty bad to have attacks succeed from further out.
Also, stage profile needs to be different...i.e. chance to recover energy by a well ridden descent.
Today saw Movistar domestiques grind everyone for most of the race...then Ineos domestiques...then FDJ domestique...then Lotto Jumbo domestiques...and then finally the GC contenders were left and Pinot attacked them.
It's stupid to attack before the domestiques are done, unless you are much better than any of them.
Pinot, Buchman, Kruisjwyck, Alaphalippe are not miles better than Gaudu, Bennet, Pouls, et al.
IMO, Ineos made an error today by not having Bernal attack. If he isnt the team leader...he should have tried to bury Pinot and Alaphalippe by making them mark an attack of his.
In the end, he almost dropped back to pace Thomas...but then the team instructed him to go with the leaders.
Poor team strategy by Ineos. |

Wow. It's getting even more interesting. Still a long way to go but Alaphilippe is looking good. As others have said though, he is now entering completely unknown territory and only really has Mas as any kind of help in the mountains.

On the Movistar thing, Valverde is the perfect teammate mentally when compared to how big a star he is (and could easily refuse to act as a superdom) but it’s such a shame that’s how he’s used when he’s now their best GC rider despite losing time on many stages due to working and dropping off

15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

I think he's just a piece in Landa's Landis attempt

Maybe though they're pretty solid in that classification:
1 Movistar Team 169:02:15
2 Trek - Segafredo 11:05
3 BORA - hansgrohe 25:10
4 Team Jumbo-Visma 27:09
5 Team INEOS 31:45

Most interesting tour for many years, one week to go and still very hard to call a top 10. New riders crack on a daily basis and seem now we also got great stage we have kinda missed up to now.

Very curious to know what De Plus would have done or would have influenced the outcome of the race hadn’t he fallen ill in the Giro. |

Guess we'll see just how much Soler has left in the tank. The more he can positively contribute the better for Movistar.
