Rio Vista Chinesa
The CT peloton heads off to Brazil for a shortened, 178 kilometer version of the 2016 Olympic road race. Its first edition, likely organised due to the announcement of a Brazilian cycling team that was announced but sadly never saw the light – yet. But I certainly don't mind, as the profile is calling for a very interesting race.
Anyway, this profile may be known to quite a few already, but it involves four climbs around the same hill as the 2016 Olympics. What's more interesting though is that the final 10 kilometers are flat, allowing weaker puncheurs to potentially catch up. And if there are headwinds, it may even prove to be a bad decision to attack on the final climb at all! Therefore, we will likely have to look at a puncheur who knows how to handle the flat and sprints to win tomorrow.
| HIL | ACC | SP | | HIL | ACC | SP | Gautier | 80 | 77 | 68 | Othman | 76 | 76 | 54 | Meyer | 79 | 77 | 72 | Pibernik | 76 | 74 | 68 | Ben Nasser | 79 | 77 | 70 | Lopez | 76 | 74 | 65 | Siskevicius | 78 | 75 | 71 | Umerbekov | 76 | 73 | 70 | Serry | 78 | 69 | 62 | Rovny | 76 | 73 | 69 | Teklit | 77 | 70 | 64 | Kebede | 76 | 72 | 60 | Hategeka | 77 | 66 | 62 | Michely | 75 | 75 | 67 | Skjerping | 77 | 65 | 58 | Favilli | 75 | 74 | 76 | Vichot | 76 | 80 | 66 | Smit | 75 | 74 | 68 | Kadri | 76 | 78 | 74 | Mancuso | 75 | 73 | 65 |
With the unpredictable profile, it's hard to pick a real favourite. So let's just take a look at the very best puncheurs and analyse their win conditions, shall we?
And when doing so, three names stand out. And they probably don't need an introduction anymore with the long season that's been behind us: Gautier, Ben Nasser and Meyer. Gautier is the strongest puncheur, but the weakest finisher and will likely look to attack on the climb and tire out the other favourites. Ben Nasser and Meyer have quite similar stats, though Meyer's slightly stronger sprint may turn this race in his favour.
This also means that Di Maggio is missing. Probably a wise choice, given that that more than the ability to climb is needed here.
After that Siskevicius is the biggest dark horse. Good puncheur abilities and a very good sprint too. Should be have been mentioned with the former three for this race?
Serry, Teklit, Sjkerpling and Hategeka then as the puncheurs who usually lack the acceleration to win races, but since this finish isn't uphill, they might be keen on doing well in this race. They're are followed on the list of favourites by the lethal Kadri-Vichot duo, who could be having a field day on this profile. Maybe they will try to do something on the downhill?
And then we're nearing outsider territory. Othman (though lacking a good sprint), Pibernik, Lopez... And the list goes on. Though it's hard to see them winning, with this profile, a top 3 certainly can't be ruled out for any puncheurs of 75HIL and above.
And last but not least, this journalist's rider to watch is Favilli, who is usually in the shadow of Vichot and Kadri but has the skillset here to cause a huge upset!

Hope MAL can push the top 10 or more with some possible MO influence

Didn’t bring the strongest team here as it isn’t a main goal. Still the opportunity for a nice result!
Good luck everyone!

This will be an interesting one. Meyer is my favorite, but there's hardly a profile out there that fits Kadri/Vichot better! A top 3 is realistic.
Favilli tends to be a bit invisible when riding with Kadri/Vichot, but hopefully he can continue his good Benelux-form and get a result here.

Pibernik seems to enjoy stage races a lot more, so let's see if he can do a good result in a classic as well

My PC is having issues, so I'll have to delay the race report to tomorrow morning. Apologies!

No problem, in fact perhaps that will give the riders travelling from Benelux a little more time to deal with the jetlag

Kadri was positioned well going into the final kilometer, but looks like that amazing pull from Bugge weared him out before the sprint. A little bit disappointed with both Kadri and Vichot here.
