At long last Ruben had the good day he had been waiting for, Fiorenzo rode brilliantly too. Edoardo was strong but the GC riders were too keen on making this stage count. Wink

The Fight for Pink
i.imgur.com/QdZFqa9.png
It's often a good idea to join the breakaway on an easier stage coming at the back of a tough one. As the pack wouldn't let Battaglin go, Oliveira became our designated man in front for the day. He sat in a group of 12.
i.imgur.com/zWSpXdk.png
Back in the pack, Zardini crashed on a roundabout. Down with him was Maglia Rosa Landa. Whilst he got up quickly, we have seen crashes affect the performance of men that are ranked high in the GC standings before.
i.imgur.com/16r5lsp.png
Speaking of those, Vincenzo Nibali was still dealing with the afterpains of his crash. He was dropped from the peloton near the intermediate sprint.
i.imgur.com/TczMmQQ.png
The bunch reduced the pace, which allowed seven of the initial escapees to carry a promising lead into the downhill. Oliveira was still with them.
i.imgur.com/phkNiRD.png
Rohan Dennis' attack came when Nelson was taking a breather after he set the pace on the climb. None of the others in the group reacted either.
i.imgur.com/JY7gSJw.png
Dennis' win left an extra sour taste in our mouths, because Oliveira won the sprint for second, as the sprinters missed the chance to score points.

The Fight for Pink
i.imgur.com/q12HVt1.png
Under a bright sun, a breakaway of 13 with Fiorenzo Colla broke clear.
i.imgur.com/W3RSg8P.png
Fiorenzo let go on Valico di Capo la Serra, the final categorised climb. A little further ahead, Kruijswijk rode away from Teshome, Guo & Mannion.
i.imgur.com/YW45731.png
Bahrain had been reluctant to pace on the penultimate - Calascio - climb, and on the next the reason why got revealed. The Maglia Rosa was about to get dropped from the pack! Yesterday's crash may be the explanation.
i.imgur.com/ZtnrGJi.png
No team was eager to increase the pace, hence why we did. Sam towed the group over the top where the overall group caught up with Fiorenzo.
i.imgur.com/IqUiIf2.png
At the same time, a pink star was fading fast. With the time gap at 3'25" already, his lead didn't look as reassuring as it did a couple of hours ago.
i.imgur.com/VNY08IB.png
When Fiorenzo was done too, Ruben tried a move on the long descent. As is mostly the case our rivals suddenly did want to have their say now.
i.imgur.com/VCsjsEU.png
They had the same reaction when Davide Formolo attacked on La Morgia, a short climb just outside L'Aquila. The Italian would not get away either.
i.imgur.com/3zS4QaR.png
Due to the accelerations, the two remaining escapees suddenly sat within reach. Meron Teshome and Jin Guo both represented a nation for which a Grand Tour stage win would be truly historical. They had a lead of 30" at the foot of the last climb, but they both kept waiting for other to act first.
i.imgur.com/jtCW04M.png
The two of them ended up being pipped by Leopold König, who gained a handful of seconds over the others. Ironically, Teshome and Guo finished in second and third spot respectively. And whereas an earthquake struck the town of L'Aquila in 2009, today only the overall standings took a hit.

Landa did hold on to his jersey, but it is not the best sign to have an off day with two ascents of Monte Terminillo included in the upcoming stage.

Felt good to leave some men behind in our turn on stage 16.

Our top 5 seems to be safe but judging by the last days I probably shouldn't boast until we reach Rome. Wink

Very unfortunate for both Nibali and Landa. Could cost them a podium and the overall win respectively.

The Fight for Pink
i.imgur.com/A8t4wVs.png
A breakaway of twelve took of before the first climb. Bahrain and AG2R's joint work kept the gap at 2 min at the foot of the first Terminillo ascent.
i.imgur.com/0F6j5XM.png
Kruijswijk and Arredondo were the strongest in front. The Dutchman also moved into the provisional mountain jersey on the summit; 4' lead now.
i.imgur.com/sCI2RjV.png
The GC contenders' group only lost Mollema (7th) on the way up. Ruben came through a rough patch of his own, not the most pleasant sign at all.
i.imgur.com/O4yvBnh.png
GC 10th Lachlan Morton surprisingly attacked early on today's last climb, which was a different side of Monte Terminillo. Ruben would look for his own pace right away, yet Landa seemed to bounce back after yesterday.
i.imgur.com/DutssEO.png
Seven kms from the line, a group caught up with Morton and Arredondo, the last man from the break. Mikel Landa did start to struggle on the dirt road. Davide Formolo, challenger number one, was nowhere to be seen.
i.imgur.com/AXXzxdW.png
After Landa lost contact, Pinot and Arredondo were a great help for their respective leaders, López and Contreras. Landa sat 58" down, Guerreiro came at 3'30", but he'd started to climb his way past quite a lot of riders.
i.imgur.com/7Zv6mJE.png
Thibaut Pinot won the group sprint. Winning the very last mountain stage should somewhat make up for the fact that he lost his GC chances early, after being involved in multiple crashes during the first week.

Landa lost time to the right man today. He also finished just 50" behind López.
i.imgur.com/mjKr0MV.png
Guerreiro rode a very steady climb and finished in front of Formolo. He came home in the same time as Leopold König, the man he had hoped to gain time on today. Sadly that was more than his legs allowed him to do.

Formolo Frown not the right day to have soft legs.

Surprised to have Pinot and Contreras appear in front, but there are always a few men who really step up towards the end of a GT.

Formolo will be very disappointed I think. If nothing happens on stage 20 we're in for a very interesting fight in the closing time trial.

The Fight for Pink
i.imgur.com/Hj6u2nN.png
While Kruijswijk, Guo and Mannion looked to settle the KoM fight in their own favour from the break, it's a matter of remaining well-positioned for the GC contenders; the three 3rd category climbs were all trickily narrow.
i.imgur.com/x03VgiL.png
Willing to continue with fewer riders, Battaglin set the pace on Rocca di Cave, today's only cat.1 difficulty. Splits could definitely occur right now.
i.imgur.com/DwNH8rv.png
A few, among others Power, lost contact. The Maglia Rosa felt relieved to see the top appear as he was clinging at the back of the 25-man peloton.
i.imgur.com/opr7A7u.png
Kruijswijk got caught on the descent but he had bagged enough points to secure the mountain jersey. This left another three escapees at the front.
i.imgur.com/wuZMAA4.png
Ruben's sudden impulse, backed by Sam, put Mikel Landa under serious pressure on Rocca Priora, the penultimate climb. A little further he would open up a gap as Sam was told to sit up and let his Portuguese mate go.
i.imgur.com/vGMq9W5.png
Formolo caught up on the descent. So did Majka, as the latter would ride away from his team leader. Four more riders were about to catch up too.
i.imgur.com/mSnHOtN.png
The last man from the break was caught ahead of Rocca di Papa, the last obstacle of today's course. Morton's acceleration made the group split as only Majka followed. Formolo sat close, Ruben came a tad further back.
i.imgur.com/u4C1CI1.png
Eventually the pace was too much for Majka, yet Formolo caught up. The Australian went too fast on the downhill though and Formolo cracked too.
i.imgur.com/SxVzASp.png
Morton's second good day in a row now got him the biggest victory of his career too. He finished more than one minute clear of his nearest chaser.
i.imgur.com/MuXzbuu.png
That nearest opponent was Guerreiro, who had caught and passed the others on the downhill. The main fact: he put enough time into König to challenge for 4th overall tomorrow.

Mikel Landa paid for his second off day as he lost the Maglia Rosa for the first time in what seemed like ages.

Easily the biggest surprise of the last few days. Could've finished way higher had he been a little more consistent, but he'll be very happy with this stage win. Smile

Good to see Ruben could surprise a little too, one more stage to do something about that fifth place.

Thank you. As you both suggested, a time trial at the very end of a GT is always somewhat special. It's often a matter of freshness rather than pure TT abilities. The outcome will be up soon.

The End of the Fight for Pink

Nélson Oliveira - here on the smoothened Via Appia Antica cobbles - had good intermediate times, but couldn't improve on Lukas Meiler's time.

He finished slower by 4".

Sam Vandenborre - here in front of the world famous Colosseum - suffered the same fate.

He finished slower by 7".

Ruben Guerreiro - who needed to finish 9" faster than König - took it easy on the first sector. The Czech was 14" faster there.

Tables had turned at the second intermediate point - König was now 1" slower.

At the line, Guerreiro caught up with Contreras, who had started 2 mins earlier. That might indicate our man was about to set a very good time on the tables!

Look at the clock... 3" faster than Meiler! This means he made up a stunning 34" on the last part of the course! Waiting for König is all their was left...

Davide Formolo - whose pink-brown combo looked horrendous - was the last to reach the infamous Saint Peter's Square. He almost caught up with Landa, which was more than good enough to secure his first GT win.

Remarkable:
Formolo won his home GT riding for the Pro Continental AG2R team.
