Liège-Bastogne-Liège (1.UWT) Liège, 261 kms
Rally Cycling's Jeffrey Perrin was the only one who got away on the climb close to the start, later to get company from Nathan Van Hooydonck and Gennadiy Tatarinov. Their gap went up to almost 9', 155 kms to the line. These three had lost half of that lead by the time they arrived at Côte de Wanne. This climb is a key point which marks the start of the hillier zone. Sixty kilometers and few action later, the riders hit the infamous Redoute climb. Tatarinov attacked his breakaway companions when their lead had shrunk to just 1'05". Inside the bunch, a high pace was set by Team Sky. Race favourites came to the fore on the next climb. Wellens, Mühlberger and Galtier's collective acceleration brought an end to the break of today. Bora leading the chase resulted in everything coming back together, with 'everything' referring to this newly formed group of 22. In there we were represented by our leader Ion Izagirre, Diego Ochoa & Pello Bilbao. Sky's pace on Côte de Colonster was so brutal that three of them simply broke clear. Two dropped back, allowing Gregor Mühlberger to open up a 15" gap. None of us could go with the chasing group that rode away too. Mühlberger had 8" on 8 chasers under the 10km-to-go kite. The rest had to forget about winning the oldest classic this year, sitting over 1' down. Mühlberg was caught before Côte de Saint-Nicolas, the penultimate climb of the day. Galtier's subsequent acceleration was too much for the others on the group, except for Dries Van Gestel. The two very quickly had 30". Wellens was able to rejoin ahead of Côte d'Ans, due to an effort only he could pull off. The chasers were too far to compete for the podium now. Van Gestel had to let go right before the ultimate left turn, meaning he'd be the one coming in 3rd place today; sprint à deux to decide the winner. Galtier clearly got the better of Wellens in their sprint. It is definitely the biggest win of his career for the Frenchman, whose profile is very similar compared to that of fellow Frenchman and teammate Julian Alaphilippe. I.Izagirre was our top finisher. Losing 2'08", he narrowly finished ahead of Sam Oomen. We concluded the 2020 spring classics with a 14th place. Solid, but lacking a few percent to compete the way we have done in the past. Quite a phrase to describe our whole classics campaign. Off to the land of stage races now.

Correct, but doing their job better than we could is not something we should be blaming them for, is it.

I was off the forum for a while and fondly remembered this story. Still as brilliant as it was before! Hoping for an excellent Romandie with Sam. |

Thanks for the kind words Raziz! Looking forward to racing Romandie as well, however Sam will mostly ride in support of Guerreiro. The latter is supposed to be our team captain for both Romandie and the Giro.

We've longed to race them for a long time, hopefully we'll deliver now too.
Thanks MothBones!

Exactly.
Ruben, as always, didn't really shine on the very short time trial and lost 33" to Dumoulin.

Tour de Romandie (2.UWT) Stage 2/6, 145.4 kms
As the riders in the breakaway were three, all KoM points up for grabs on the only climb would go to one of them. Atop Côte de Sottens, it was Slik who left Drucker and Le Gac in the dust, laying hands on the first jersey. They remained out front quite long, but did not stand a chance on a false flat stretch less than 5 kilometers from home. And sadly, neither did we. We ended up being blown away by a few teams that actually are capable of executing mass sprint preparations. Today's outcome was a victory for Bouhanni, while we were pleased to see Ruben finish within the peloton. Tour de Romandie (2.UWT) Stage 3/6, 168.4 kms
This year's third stage consisted of three long laps, which all featured Col des Pontins (cat.2) and the longer Col de la Vue des Alpes (cat.1) 1 time. Robert Kiserlovski soon turned out to be the wrong man to be Zardini's companion in the break. The Italian already had to let go on the first lap. Fiorenzo Colla bridged the gap on the next lap, alongside Mikaël Chérel. Kiserlovski made sure the AG2R Frenchman was dropped again near the end of it. Fiorenzo could spend some more kilomters out front with him. Fiorenzo would eventually lose contact too, atop the penultimate climb. Kiserlovski kept 1'50" with 35 kms and one Vue des Alpes ascent to go. The Croatian was caught at the last intermediate sprint. A peloton of 48 riders reached the foot of the final climb, all ready for the decisive move. Guerreiro gave Vandenborre a signal, asking him to up the pace. This got the Portuguese a gap, but he was own his own with 7 kms to the top. Ruben fell back and Mikel Landa took his place out front. Team Sky was in charge of the chase, yet his gap grew to 25" and it was theirs to close. Something Landa hadn't considered at all was a strong man coming back from behind. Wilco Kelderman joining came as a total surprise to him, as the Basque would even get dropped on the descent. The pack sat at 40". Kelderman secured his fourth stage win of the year while the others were yet to enter the final straight. Guerreiro came home inside the pack and sits only 8" clear of the top ten, with opportunities to move up incoming.
