Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/WLvJKm8.png
We couldn't get a man in a breakaway that featured three riders. Claeys, Chevalier and Tansley started to attack each other with 35 kms to cover.
i.imgur.com/DSvS9dn.png
Chevalier was the last to see his come to an end. Right as he did, Stefan Küng launched an attack, which he'd have to keep up for almost 17 kms.
i.imgur.com/IyJKqeH.png
The advantage amounted to only 18" three kilometers from the line. With the sprint trains, including ours, showing up, it was unlikely he'd make it.
i.imgur.com/AmffGGA.png
Battaglin made us catch up. Whilst Zurlo was Barbero's last leadout, J. Lobato launched was forced to launch early as he had not one helper left.
i.imgur.com/dD9yvhG.png
Lobato quickly gained several meters, as Barbero chose to sit up a little longer. In his wheel he had Quick-Steps' sprinter for today, Gerry Druyts.
i.imgur.com/IVnzscN.png
Barbero was surprised by Druyts when the latter passed him on the left, forcing him to keep his legs still. There was no way to make up for that.

2nd is always a bit sad, but when the dust settles is a great result especially considered that Carlos Barbero was not a favourite here.

That is rarely a bad result, correct.

FYI, I never include my own riders among the mentioned favourites. Wink

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/LveI1yu.png
Nobody could get away but after the first climb of the Cauberg. About 50 kms in Van Rensburg, Tatarinov, Parrinello & Gimenez finally broke clear.
i.imgur.com/ozmUg2n.png
Commotion stayed out until close to the 100km to go mark. A huge crash reduced the number of riders inside the pack to thirty. All race favourites involved, i.a. Adam Yates, succeeded in regaining contact with the bunch.
i.imgur.com/2YZIr4U.png
A new crash occured just before the second Cauberg climb, with 90km to go. Michal Kwiatkowski lay among the main victims, the break had 2'05".
i.imgur.com/A3d1Jc2.png
One had to wait for the final 40 kilometers for more action. Close to the Eyserbosweg, Tatarinov was the first to be dropped from the breakaway.
i.imgur.com/swpzXkj.png
The Russian grit his teeth and caught up again on the Keutenberg, which Sebastian Henao wanted to use in order to bridge to them, on his own.
i.imgur.com/GCo0w1D.png
Sebastian caught up with Gimenez and Parrinello but Van Rensburg had already attacked. Dealing with the Cauberg for the penultimate time, the South African rider saw his gap over an accelerating peloton drop to 50".
i.imgur.com/DEB7dQj.png
Henao dropped back to help Izagirre, which only left Gimenez and Van Rensburg in front. The latter's gap went back up on the climb, now 1'01".
i.imgur.com/uWME0vq.png
All hands on deck atop the climb, as race favourites finally showed some initiative. Now was the time for contenders, when Julian Alaphilippe and Tom Slagter, who both finished on the podium last year, attacked jointly.
i.imgur.com/jNCguos.png
Over the Geulhemmerberg, Van Rensburg eventually got caught. With 12 kilometers to go, Ion Izagirre was part of the newly formed elite group.
i.imgur.com/dRSTzjy.png
Izagirre had a hard time on the Bemelerberg, yet found himself at the back of the lead group at the foot of the ultimate Cauberg ascent. Behind those nine Tim Wellens was moving heaven and earth trying to catch up.
i.imgur.com/1IsqUaW.png
When the pace had dropped vigorously, Simon Yates felt persuaded into trying an attack he for some reason didn't fully believe in, wrongfully so.
i.imgur.com/b7PQmAa.png
Mühlberger used the moment of hesitation to get to the front and launch.
i.imgur.com/K3dO17O.png
A slightly downhill last kilometer was grist to the mill of the Austrian. As he secured the third big classic win of his career, Ion paid for sitting in a group composed by riders with a stronger acceleration. He came in 10th.

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/1W8oxWK.png
The pack would only let go of the above three: Rivera, Guerin and Rubio.
i.imgur.com/uPtYJOa.png
They wouldn't catch sight of them again until Côte d'Ereffe, 16 kms from the white line. The time advantage had decreased to less than a minute.
i.imgur.com/RIwqSjs.png
Tables had already turned in the subsequent descent. This elite group of Mühlberger, Wellens, Alaphilippe and Van Gestel was leading the dance.
i.imgur.com/HMUv367.png
Over Côte de Cherave, the penultimate climb, the men in the lead group were now ten. The chasing pack sat right around the corner, yet the race radio put the gap at 30". We're desperately hoping for the pace to drop.
i.imgur.com/Rw7yXI9.png
Tim Wellens' first acceleration already showed what the balance of power looked like. Only Alaphilippe could barely match his pace, even supported by Felline. With some 500m left on Mûr de Huy, Wellens launched anew.
i.imgur.com/ykKHV0t.png
Smart enough to have kept something back for the final meters, Wellens secured his second Flèche Wallonne triumph. Alaphilippe held on to finish second with Van der Poel claiming third. We go from a win last season to Enrico Battaglin being our best finisher in 25th, over one minute down.

It's been a long time since I've checked up on the story sections, and I'm at the same time absolutely amazed and not at all surprised that you're still going. At this point, three years and counting, this may well be the longest consecutive story on this site, no? And at such a high quality, too. I'll start catching up from the start of the 2020 season Smile

Well, it's great to welcome you back! Don't think it's the longest consecutive one as Team Novo Nordisk is still around as well, Have fun catching up, because I'm currently a little too busy to post many new reports. Wink
