Top 10 Race Goal - \/ (check) Wink nice.

@Abhishek - Yep a great race for us, and awesome rides from both of our leaders! Yes for sure, let's hope the inspiration of Debesay's ride can help the whole squad kick on Grin

@Putin97 - Well, we saw how the first of them went just now Pfft Not quite healing the pain, but a nice distraction and hopefully as I said above the start of the process of moving on Pfft

@Booker - Ourselves very much included! GB 10th in ToME and Debesay 7th in G-W are exactly the kinds of results I'm looking for this year - that stage win on top was wonderful to see indeed, thanks Grin

I also can't wait to see Debesay maxed - really wish it was done by now though - either, his future skillset isn't top even in PCT (btw #ClassicsNeedsAcc) but he'll just be an even better and cooler version of what he is now - which sounds amazing! And Areruya... well I think Penasa would be a tough opponent in the first few years if they ever meet but glad to hear he's already causing pre-emptive fear, three years from being maxed!

Thanks, I'm trying to build a good squad for the future. If we slog this one out and stay up I'd love to start kicking on with that Smile

@Tamijo - It was nice to finally achieve a pre-race goal to tell you the truth Pfft

March Preview
After a big upswing in our fortunes in February, with three wins and some other great results, we'll look to drive forward with this momentum into an even busier March. Roux gets his first leading role, as does Bazhkou, as all seven leaders get a shot.

Part of a cobbled double-header with the Roma Maxima and given the sprint stage with bonuses (though it's usually a breakaway oh god I'm regretting it already) we thought Rowe would be our leader here. We'll aim for a top 10 in this field, and a breakaway on the first couple of stages. Daniel is looking forward to the TT, whilst our young African duo are looking forward to it as well, but because it means this race is over.

A rough course for Mekseb here, pure power cobbles a la Roubaix. However as he showed in G-W he's no one-dimensional hilly cobbler and has a lot of power too, so with a reduced startlist (and hopefully some form on side) a top 10 is the target, but not a necessity. A breakaway, as always, would be nice too.

Our first team goal of the season comes in the high slopes of the Andes, in the Vuelta a Colombia. It's "just" a top 10, but nevertheless it won't be easy. A pure climbing race is not exactly Velits' forte, but as he showed last month he can show a punch! Maybe we'd have rather switched the leaders between here and East Java, but we couldn't risk it, with this as maybe our only attainable goal!

Meanwhile Tosh will attempt to take the first stage, and then go into survival mode over the next two days (with some help) to use his generally decent climbing ability to take Stage 4 as well when other sprinters cannot.

At least, that's the plan.

A little bit of a home race for us, with Telkom Indonesia hoping for some nice representation. We had a good performance, with two in the Top 20 as a CT team, but not any real action. Hopefully with a better leader in Bennett who can push for a top 10 depending on the startlist, Luke Rowe making his sprint debut for our team, and hopefully Jams not getting stuck signing signatures before Stage 1 this year, we can improve on both counts.

A tough race for us, a hilly classic with some of the world's best riders in attendance. Roux isn't way out of his depth but it's a step up from the CT! This is a beautiful race which many of our riders have always wanted to attend, so it will be a great experience, but we are here to score some points. Roux and Venter will be expected to, ideally, but we know even that won't be easy. Surely a breakaway attempt is a must here too

A funny little tour up next, with a prologue, a sprint stage with little hills, a hilly stage with slightly bigger hills, and an epilogue. We've brought three leaders here, and hopefully they can all give it a real shot - Stan in his season debut going for the GC if the hills are decisive-ish, or for a minor GC placing if it's just TT-affected. Roux will go for an attack on Stage 3 at least, and maybe Stage 2 over the speedbumps. and Tosh will be doing it the other way: sprinting on Stage 2, and maybe on Stage 3 if he can survive the hills and it's a bunch sprint.

Another flat cobbles race and a super tough one! But it actually sometimes ends in a smaller group sprint, perfect for Rowe! As usual a top 10 and a breakaway is the goal, and as usual for both that's easier said than done. Let's hope it's a little more Gent-Wevelgem than Viana do Castelo!

Here to go in for Velits to hunt for (again, we don't know where to aim) the top 5 or podium, and maybe some success behind for Bennett if he's not compromised too much by helping Velits, or, more likely, by the massive ITT. We also have the much-awaited debut of Tosh Van der Sande, who will, along with Dylan, look to train-hop his way to a stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/catalunya/MG18_catalunya_1_001.jpg

We got off to a good start with our Slovakian captain taking a top 10 in the prologue, and even sitting in the hot seat for a while!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/catalunya/MG18_catalunya_2_014.jpg

Stage 2 was the major mountain test, but other than Denifl taking a stage win there was little of note, with Velits finishing with all the other GC contenders 36 seconds behind. Unfortunately Bennett lost time here and tumbled out of the Top 10-15 fight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C1/catalunya/MG18_catalunya_3_014.jpg

However our Kiwi champ wasn't demoralised, and fought well to a second place in an uphill sprint behind a late attacker the next day. A great day for us with Velits in this group too, and many of our rivals such as Uran and Shikai conceding minutes!

i.imgur.com/sOqkPfo.jpg

Day 4 was a day for Tosh, and we actually decided to set up a sprint traain as well as do a lot of work chasing down the break. Our GC leader Velits here showing his character, helping out on the front doing some TT warm-up on the flats, but also working for his teammates. Gilanipoor and Areruya also helping out in this photo. After we caught the break we dropped out to set up our train in the last 10km.

i.imgur.com/Avwtfca.jpg

Jams put the hammer down in the final 3km with Tosh in the wheel (and leadout man Kennett not far behind) to earn us an advantage early on.

i.imgur.com/qtYCGLh.jpg

With 700m to go, after a quick leadout from Kennett, Tosh launched in the perfect spot at the perfect time. However there was a swarm of riders just him.

i.imgur.com/A9Xct4O.jpg

But our new Belgian held on for a great victory to start of our sprinting season with a bang! A perfect stage for us and absolutely brilliant to see our riders working together so well already - and a powerful leadout from two of our young talents!

i.imgur.com/zEs4xrH.jpg

A key test against the clock the next day and Velits did well, hopping onto the podium but still quite a distance to Keizer at the top, and further behind Choi than we'd have liked. Clearly in most cases, his TT won't be an advantage so much as not a weakness! But here it was handy to give him that podium spot before the final day.

i.imgur.com/m3Hj2O1.jpg

A rainy stage 6 up to Montserrat was to be the final chance for some time gain, and with Keizer in serious trouble we sensed an opportunity! Velits played a cool hand, following the moves on the last climb (with Bennett also sneaking into this final 10 man selection) but not expending too much energy.

i.imgur.com/YYuXLd2.jpg

Until, that is, he attacked with 600m to go! We knew with Keizer out of the lead we only needed time on Choi, but I'll give you one guess who that rider just behidn Velits is...

i.imgur.com/aJ4mKQZ.jpg

Velits isn't known for punchy attacks like this but he was on fire today and got a gap to the other GC contenders aside from Meintjes and Choi. No looking back here to check on our rival for the win, but the gap was slowly opening...

i.imgur.com/KKE2Zcl.jpg

Victory for Velits! A superbly timed win, holding off Meintjes and Choi and taking enough time out of Keizer to move above him! No GC win with Choi's very good ride, but 2nd and a stage win is nothing to be ashamed of at all! Bennett with a great top 10 behind, a shame he couldn't have finished with Velits on Stage 2 and earned a top 10 in this race, even with the TT! But still a decent race from him.

All in all a fantastic end to February and hopefully the race that really gets our ball rolling, with Velits bouncing back from his ToME disaster and Tosh winning at his first opportunity, as well as just a fantastic team performance. Two Stages, one stage 2nd and 2nd on GC. Bring on March!

February Review
Some high highs and low lows in February as our leaders got some outings and we started to acclimatise to the second division. Three victories has already surpassed expectations by a long way, but some poor days has denied us some potentially key points as well. However some spirited efforts and team cohesion mean it's a promising enough start to life in the survival battle.

Not a lot of stunning snaps of our riders, but a nice shot of our sexy kit in the sun takes it:

Probably got the leaders this double header the wrong way around but this was four months ago and I don't really care what you think at this point.

Schreurs flew the flag on Stage 1 with a nice breakaway appearance.

i.imgur.com/vMhWg0r.jpg

Rowe kept a cool head to finish eighth on the stage, on the same time as all the favourites (but not the winning breakaway riders). He would finish ninth on Stage 2 under similar circumstances.

i.imgur.com/AdGsYTW.jpg

In a messy Stage 3 sprint Rowe didn't get the hoped-for stage win, but did grab some bonuses with a decent third, ahead of tomorrow's crucial ITT.

i.imgur.com/CBIkmjR.jpg

Though copious amounts of alcohol were at the ready in anticipation of an awful ride from our leader, he turned us from doubters into believers - that he didn't suck - with a top 20 ride to finish 7th on GC - not bad at all!

Oh, and did we mention he only had two domestiques, both of whom came in the top 30? "Our first team goal of the season comes in the high slopes of the Andes, in the Vuelta a Colombia. It's "just" a top 10, but nevertheless it won't be easy. A pure climbing race is not exactly Velits' forte, but as he showed last month he can show a punch!"

i.imgur.com/7gEikJK.jpg

A mildly dissapointing start as Tosh could only manage sixth on Stage 1, but considering his lack of positioning, his sprint was fairly impressive.

Stage 2 began with our loanee Daniel trying to get into the break, but the harsh slopes were too much for our Coloradan. And things would go downhill from there, as Velits hard what could politely be called an "off day", coming 29th and shipping 7 minutes on the first mountain stage. Maybe this super easy goal won't be so easy...

i.imgur.com/23Ub1C5.jpg
i.imgur.com/4uJwE6Q.jpg

We thought that we may as well go for a jersey, and let our Iranian missile - maybe I'll rethink that nickname - loose, as he attacked the peloton on the brutally tough Stage 3 with over 80km to go, at the foot of the second Category 2 climb quickly passing the struggling breakaway remnants on his way to a certain KoM lead.

i.imgur.com/Ef7BrMP.jpg

At the foot of the final climb Gilanipoor had two minutes to the next rider on the road and 10 minutes to the peloton, and though he was absolutely exhausted, the stage win and a significant GC boost were in play. Meanwhile in the splintering peloton Velits had his mojo back and was at the front of proceedings.

i.imgur.com/fNOK1OQ.jpg

Meanwhile Gilanipoor, against all knowledge of human physiology and all odds, kept going after more than 80km of the toughest climbing in the world...

i.imgur.com/mpEhkag.jpg

And took a truly stunning victory - probably our team's toughest ever victory, and certainly one of the most epic, with over 80km of pure solo grit. This is one we'll remember for a long, long time.

To cap off a great day, Velits came fifth and moved to 14th on GC, whilst Gilanipoor moved to 17th, 2nd in Points and 1st in the KoM competition!

i.imgur.com/oIsr998.jpg

In a chaotic and messy finish to the flat stage 4, Tosh was seventh whilst MTK was tenth after rolling the dice on a late attack in the chaos. The winds brought great joy for us on GC, as Velits moved to 7th and Gilanipoor lost time but stayed 17th, which is honestly the most baller move imaginable for a KoM chasing minor GC man and since that's what I was in my junior days before I failed as a cyclist I have mad respect. Game respects game.

That probably made us feel a little too audacious, as after Gilanipoor failed in a breakaway attempt the next day Velits decided to throw a hail mary and join a stacked breakaway. Yeah, that was stupid... we lost the GC top 10 and the KoM lead. Not a great day.

i.imgur.com/89BM3p0.jpg

Velits attacked too late on Stage 6 and got 5th on the stage but stayed 20th on GC.

An absolutely shockingly bad race, not something you'd often hear us say about a race with a stage win, two 5ths, a 6th, a 7th, a 10th and a couple of days in the polka dots, but two days with none of those things ruined it for us. A fail at our easiest goal of the year, and I just hope we can remember the glorious ride of Gilanipoor and forget anything else about this ill-fated trip to the Andes.

@knockout - Annoying to let such an easy goal slip. But yes, a bright spot in that epic ride from Gilanipoor Grin
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

July Preview
We're still catching up on our backlog of monthly previews and race reports, but we'll also drop a July preview in here for you. No spoilers for previous races but the boys are buoyed by the standings and the recent performances and there is a sense of real fellowship among the squad now as they look to finish the season strongly, with a secure future in the PCT not far away now.

July is a quiet month which should see us slip down the rankings. It has our only foray into the CT as we return to the site of our only GC victory to date - unfortunately due to restrictions without said victor. We then have two HC races, one mountainous and one hilly stage race.

First off - a welcome to our stagiaires, Hernan Ricardo Aguirre and Joseph Kimathi, the former making his professional debut on his home continent, whilst the latter makes his first professional appearance for 2 years. We're here, on paper, to defend the yellow jersey won by Anthony Roux in heroic fashion last year, despite the MGUCI barring the Frenchman from competing. Instead we had to send him to South Africa - I bet he won't do anything there...

Stan the Man goes to tear the CT a new one if they don't make the hilly stages hell for him, as he's a premiere PCT hilly stage racer and so this could be a stomping ground, were in not for the fact the TT is so insignificant that, well, Roux could win this race. Jaco Venter gets his first (and probably last) leading role for us as he co-leads for if the medium mountain-ish stages are dominant. Meanwhile Joseph Areruya makes his debut at this level and will look for some breakaways.

We'll try to get adjusted to the new barbaric nature of the CT without Xero and Repsol, Ying and Yang, Chaos and Chaos, keeping things balanced. It'll be nice riding a CT stage race without them. Just kidding, Batman is nothing without the Joker Sad

The imaginatively-named classic gets the Xero treatment with the world's most consistently inconsistent stage racer Velits, but if there's one thing he is consistent at (other than being inconsistent) it's sucking at mountainous classics - so far. He's backed by a couple of great climbers in Bennett and Gilanipoor and five youngsters who no doubt won't finish. Shhh, they think they're going to Disneyworld.

We're not expecting much from an HC hilly race with no TTs (feels weird relying on TTs in hilly races after last year, but Stan is the Man). Roux will lead us and hopefully find a spark, whilst we'd love to see Stan or Jaco have a pop en route. Areruya makes it a triptyque in July and again has free reign to go for breakaways, as do the roleur duo of Schreurs and Ngamoki-Cameron - any excuse to see that Fijian jersey is a good one.

"Last year had a good performance here, with two in the Top 20 as a CT team, but not any real action. Hopefully with a better leader in Bennett who can push for a top 10 depending on the startlist, Luke Rowe making his sprint debut for our team, and hopefully Jams not getting stuck signing signatures before Stage 1 this year, we can improve our result and our action."

Areruya and Davison made attempts to get into the Stage 1 breakaway, the former succeeded with his bonus seconds putting him second in the white jersey classification after the first stage - whilst Schreurs was third.

Rowe had perfect position but ran out of steam and was a disappointing ninth in the sprint.

Bennett rode solidly on the mountain to come 10th, and 7th overall. A solid result. Meanwhile Areruya had a lovely ride to come in 30th on GC and 5th in the white jersey standings, meaning he'd pick up a few points as well. Maybe one day he can come back and win here.

A solid if mildly uneventful race for us, a rarity it must be said. Sometimes it is nice to have a solid points haul with nothin ggoing on. But attacking and highs and lows and all that is much better. Bennett did well, Rowe did crap, and Areruya did great.

"A tough race for us, a hilly classic with some of the world's best riders in attendance. Roux isn't way out of his depth but it's a step up from the CT! This is a beautiful race which many of our riders have always wanted to attend, so it will be a great experience, but we are here to score some points."

Yeah, easier said than done. Points go to the top 50, so a couple of riders in there plus a breakaway would be nice and bring us a not crap 5-10 points hopefully.

4 points from Debesay and Roux each bringing in 2, and a nothing race for us. Well, except Per being amazing as always, nice to see.

Who cares about the result? Two guys in the 30s, happy?
