Tour of Qatar

Stage 2: Sealine Beach Resort – Doha Corniche 120.2 km

Welcome to the 2nd stage, we start at Sealine Beach Resort an isolated resort located about 15 km south of port city Mesaieed, form there heading north for 11 rounds on a circuit route in Doha, before finishing at the Doha Corniche a waterfront promenade along Doha Bay.

Again some wind (30 km/hour) and rather cloudy.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/S2/0.jpg

Right from the start we see two large breakaway attempts, first 10 riders and closing in another 7 riders, peloton not really reacting.
Group 1: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Chtioui, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Egidio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Hepburn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Lammertink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Lindeman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Ringheim, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Rosskopf, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Senyenov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Venturini

Group 2: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Frison, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Gjølberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Groselj, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Karatzios, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ligthart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Maccagli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Sagiv

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/S2/1.jpg

The 17 riders join together and build a lead of 1’20” but then it seems as if the peloton decides that they are too many, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Baska, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Latour, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla and
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Neilands join forces to close the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Ariesen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Lindeman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Senyenov attacks, but that was not to be either.

Then with just about 1 km to the sprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Ringheim with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Major and a moment later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Skala with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Hofland accelerates.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Ringheim wins the sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Major and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Skala

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/S2/2.jpg

Must be some tactical reasons for this, anyway the peloton also decides to close this breakaway, just to let a new constellation get away. The break of the day turns out to be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Hofland, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Major, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Declerq and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Campenaerts.

The spectators meet the riders with a huge smile on most faces, hard to believe but it is raining in the desert!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/S2/3.jpg

The breakaway gets a little more than 4 minutes, besides that not much to report over the next period of the race, besides the fact that it was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Eislers, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Croket, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png De Vreese, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Gallego Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Hnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Brockhoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Blythe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Stoltz working hardest in the high pace period of the chase, cutting down the distance to 59” with 10 km left.

4 km left now, distance 33”. This is the situation in front of the peloton:

2.5 km left – the breakaway gets caught at this rather late moment, quite a lot have changed over the last 1.5 kilometer.

This is the situation, where we now got three sepetate trains up:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/S2/5.jpg

1.5 km left.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard have moved past the Degenkolb train and seem to have started his sprint dangerously early, likely trying to force the other sprinters to lose thier trains.
Two meters behind him we got a line with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino.

On the left side of Mansilla we got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek at his wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen and further left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump.

At the right side on par with Van Stayen it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado and further right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh.

A few meters behind this group in the middle we got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb who is a bit far from Merino Criado’s wheel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Croket and behind those three pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Van der Sanden. To the right of those pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley and on wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand.

A little further back we got first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Porsev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu and to their left rear side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Boeckmans with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen on par with them to the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel.

Everyone else is still not out of the curve, hard to guess if anyone in that group will get back in the race, before it is too late.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/S2/6.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard first under the red kite.
Behind him is it still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard.

On their left rear side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump very close, on Van Stayen’s right side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino.

About 2 meter behind Avelino, from left to right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh

Another few meters further back:
At left: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Porsev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Boeckmans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen.

At right: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen.

Another few meters further back, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel side by side.

The rest is 300 meters or more behind Coquard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/S2/7.jpg

600 meters left
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard in front but now many riders a closing in on him. This could be a very close race between many riders.

Closest is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek, sitting at the rear right and almost as close pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff.

At Kristoff’s left rear three riders almost side by side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump

At Kristoff’s right rear pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino at his wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh on his left rear pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado.

Then 2-3 meters gab down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Porsev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Boeckmans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen, in this order but all very close.

An exploded pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Mansilla 5-6 meters further back side by side with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Chen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Dzamastagic but almost 400 meters behind the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/S2/8.jpg

Looks like Coquard started his sprint a bit too early, he has lost pace getting passed on his right by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino and also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh both looking very good. Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek has just passed Coquard’s left side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard as mentioned now in 4th position at his left rear pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kump on his inside almost on par. At Coquard right rear pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff slightly in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado.

The next group is three riders behind Merino Criado right rear, from left to right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Porsev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand. Almost also on par with them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu, then another 2 meters further back, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Boeckmans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Groenewegen.

The last rider in the group is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Zabel but too far back too make it in top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/S2/9.jpg

After an unbelivable trilling and very very close finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kennaugh was the fastest on the last few 100 meters winning at Doha Corniche. This was his 2nd win in Tour of Qatar after winning the same stage back in 2016.

2nd pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_prp.png Avelino takes the last podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Ciolek 5th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Merino Criado 6th surprisingly faster then the team leader today.

Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Porsev round of top 10th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PT/Qtar/S2/10.jpg

After two very good days in the saddle Peter Kennaugh takes the race lead with 7 sec. to Sam Bewley and 12 sec. to John Degenkolb. That means that he will of course also take the points lead.

Moser – Sygic keep the team lead.

Rick Zabel leads the youth calcification after a good first stage, still the only youth rider to take bonus sec. on the finish line.
