Stage 2/8, 186 kms
i.imgur.com/UE2J9GP.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/Vdbyx35.png
In the pouring rain, the peloton would not let go of more than four men. Bouvry narrowly won the only KoM sprint, claiming the polka dot jersey.
i.imgur.com/I6ZmBiv.png
After the last intermediate sprint, Girard rode away from the other three.
i.imgur.com/B1s01Sf.png
Bouvry turned the tables becoming the last survivor from the breakaway. Bouvry started the last 2200 meters with an advantage of a mere 20 sec.
i.imgur.com/g2JgTyP.png
At the same time Olivares grabbed Marcel Kittel's wheel. With Martínez sitting this close to the front, things looked promising (chapter n°21367).
i.imgur.com/kSrLtOe.png
Bouvry was caught near the red kite. Kittel could launch when Bovenhuis swung off . Manuel Martínez left his leadout man Ibai Olivares' wheel.
i.imgur.com/J9IhYkv.png
Whilst having progressed, Manuel still can't match the top sprinters' top speed. Hofland beat Kittel for the win, Manuel came home in a solid 6th.

Stage 3/8, 178.5 kms
i.imgur.com/2uTkM6s.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/em2u6kS.png
Romain Guyot contested the first intermediate sprint and ended up in the break all by himself. He easily won all of the remaining sprints for today.
i.imgur.com/dpgeRXi.png
It came as quite a surprise that Andrew Talansky was dropped from the pack. His crash earlier during the stage might be a plausible explanation.
i.imgur.com/l38OF5f.png
Vincenzo Nibali lost contact too in today's tricky, up-and-down final third.
i.imgur.com/nYTNHSF.png
Romain Guyot was reeled in with less than 2.5 left. Immediately Michael Matthews saw his chance to snatch a stage and his first victory this year.
i.imgur.com/bCIcPdz.png
His early celebration seemed to cost him the victory but despite this clear image, the jury did not give the win to French champion Nacer Bouhanni. Sam Vandenborre had a very bad patch towards the end losing over 1'.

Stage 4/8, 215.4 kms
i.imgur.com/ZuST5Q1.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/SBtXHuz.png
Nearing the second climb, drama struck for Bonifazio. The crash is likely to keep him from riding the first monument of the year, Milano-Sanremo.
i.imgur.com/5M7cnEA.png
Meanwhile, a break of 7 had taken off. Talansky struggled to even follow.
i.imgur.com/8IosnC9.png
Five of them were left when Dayer Quintana paced on the cat.2 Côte de Fangas. Not many riders were dropped from the pack, but the breakaway was as good as over. Still around 45 kilometers left before the finish line.
i.imgur.com/V00d89D.png
As soon as it was three new riders attacked: Haas, Guo, Sütterlin did not allow Chávarri to join. The latter clearly hasn't found the best form yet.
i.imgur.com/CiK2bqs.png
The three were reeled in 10 kilometers from home. With Olivares still in the group, we had an interesting option for the bunch sprint. Knowing he wouldn't be of much help as a leadout Diego Ochoa launched an attack.
i.imgur.com/QvynWF6.png
Our Colombian did not get much space and hit the final kilometer with an advantage of a couple of meters. Tony Gallopin was close to catching up.
i.imgur.com/1IFoAWS.png
The modest gap together with the downhill final straight eventually gave Diego the edge. It's his second WT victory after a Giro stage last season.

Great feeling to be able to add such a nice win to his (and our) palmares indeed!

FYI, I have updated the first post with a table showing more details on our results in WT stage races so far. I'll add classics later on.

Stage 5/8, 166.4 kms
i.imgur.com/kdB62AQ.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/78naorO.png
A breakaway group with Vincenzo Nibali was caught 20 km from the line. For most of the day, AG2R and Sky had been the primary forces chasing.
i.imgur.com/CXIsIZ9.png
A fall took out some interesting names in Pardo, Kreuziger and Fuglsang.
i.imgur.com/yGW0w1O.png
Dayer's impulse on Côte de Chabrits gave birth to a GC group of 9 men: Dayer & Nairo, Verona, Formolo, Dumoulin, Van Gestel, A.Yates, Szefler, Manfredi. Near the top of the climb these nine had put 40" into the pack.
i.imgur.com/IijFiPm.png
Adam Yates set the pace on la Montée Laurent Jalabert in Mende. Dayer struggled to keep up and would soon lose contact. Nairo, Van Gestel and Formolo looked good, while Aru tried to make the bridge from the bunch.
i.imgur.com/rqRhW5d.png
The E1 group was down to 4 riders, but Formolo still wanted things to go faster. None of the other three responded as the E3 group was closing in on them. By then Dayer, Sam and Diego were climbing rather far back.
i.imgur.com/s95B9DG.png
Formolo's triumph atop Côte de la Croix Neuve made him move into the yellow jersey. The 7-man chasing group limited the time loss to just 32". All of our better climbers lost over two minutes after a disappointing day.

An unexpected moment is always the sweeter, should give a boost for the upcoming days here in southern France.

True, now we no longer intend to go for the GC. Another stage or a different jersey would be great in addition to Diego's win. Smile

Stage 6/8, 179.7 kms
i.imgur.com/e3HxqPS.png

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/54NhZ9h.png
Eight riders entered the break of the day, among whom mountain jersey Jimmy Turgis, Juan Andrés Pardo Calvo, Adrien Costa and Johan Le Bon.
i.imgur.com/RBm690a.png
Turgis had a good day out front as he managed to extend his gap in the KoM standings. The break had 2'30" atop the last labeled climb of today.
i.imgur.com/hid7Ty9.png
Stefano Agostini was the strongest on the last climbs. At the start of the final descent, Agostini kept 48" on the pack appearing in the background.
i.imgur.com/g35iVu6.png
Eder tried to sneak away on the downhill, but the reduced pack wouldn't let him ride off. Agostini was caught shortly Chávarri's vain acceleration.
i.imgur.com/e8Y8jsV.png
Bora's Marc Goos won the sprint of the reduced bunch, Dayer Quintana came 6th. Diego Ochoa sadly couldn't move up in the overall standings.

Story of the Day
i.imgur.com/QHCR9Gq.png
After the first climb Eder ended up in a breakaway of 13, amongst whom i.a. present KoM jersey wearer J.Turgis, Gougeard, Adrien Costa, Le Bon.

The group fell apart on the 4th climb of the day. On its top, 7 riders were still together. Chávarri was still with them exactly 100 km from the line.

Eder put down the hammer on the first cat. Col de Bourigaille. Atop the longest climb, he had 45" on 4 chasers, 5'30" on the pack with 60km left.

While Eder decided not to sit up, the pace of the peloton was upped in a steady way. All other escapees were caught before the final intermediate sprint, where the chronometer put Chávarri's time gap at 2'11"; 35 left.

No crazy pace on the last climb, which allowed Eder to reach its top with 1'35". In the far background in the picture CCC's Romain Guyot attacked.

A couple other accelerations revived the chase. Team Sky took the front on the descent towards Cannes, home to the world famous Film Festival.

Our brave attacker was caught 10 kilometers from the finish. We still had Diego Ochoa and Dayer Quintana inside the thoroughly reduced pack.

Dayer tried a late attack because the group still had many sprinters in it. Yates and white jersey Valérien Galtier made sure he wouldn't get away.

Two Sunweb riders fought it out for today's stage win. Jasper Bovenhuis came out on top, with AG2R's Davide Formolo staying in the overall lead.
